For a long Safari page, use File > Print (or press Command-P), inspect the preview, then choose PDF > Save as PDF. This creates a readable, shareable document across pages—not one tall image of the browser. To keep a webpage copy with its graphics, use Safari’s Web Archive format instead.
Save a long Safari webpage as a PDF
PDF is usually the best choice when you want to read, share, or file a long page. It captures the page’s print rendering, so the result is laid out as document pages rather than as a pixel-for-pixel image of the browser window.

- Open the webpage in Safari and wait for the content you need to appear.
- Press Command-P, or choose File > Print. Safari opens the print dialog.
- Review the preview. Check how the page breaks across sheets and inspect the text, images, and layout. Where available, adjust paper size, orientation, or scaling.
- Open the PDF button or menu in the print dialog and choose Save as PDF.
- Name the file, choose where to save it, and save.
The preview matters: a webpage’s print layout and your print settings affect the PDF. If a section, image, or heading is missing or poorly placed, try a different orientation or scaling option and review the preview again before saving. Save a webpage as a Web Archive
Choose File > Save As in Safari, then select Web Archive under Format. This is the built-in option for keeping a webpage copy that includes graphics. Links in the archive are not a guarantee that linked sites will work offline: Apple says they continue to work as long as the destination webpages remain available. When a regular screenshot is enough
macOS’s built-in screenshot controls capture the screen area you can see, not a full scrolling webpage as one tall image. Use these shortcuts when the visible appearance is what you need:
- Shift-Command-3: capture the entire screen.
- Shift-Command-4: select an area to capture.
- Shift-Command-4, then press Space: capture a window or menu.
- Shift-Command-5: open the Screenshot app, which includes capture controls and options such as a timer and save location.

Page Source is for HTML, not a visual record
Choose File > Save As > Format > Page Source only when you specifically need the page’s HTML source. It saves HTML, not the rendered appearance of the full webpage; choose PDF or Web Archive for those purposes.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The PDF cuts off or breaks content awkwardly: inspect the print preview and try another available paper size, orientation, or scaling setting. The output follows the page’s print layout.
- Some images or displayed items are missing from a Web Archive: the page may prevent Safari from saving certain items. Apple notes this limitation in its Safari saving guidance.
- Links in the archive do not work offline: Web Archive preserves graphics, but links depend on destination webpages remaining available.
- A screenshot shortcut does something unexpected: keyboard layout and system settings can affect shortcuts. Safari shortcuts may vary by language and keyboard layout; check the app menus if a shortcut behaves differently. Apple’s Safari keyboard shortcut guide explains this qualification.
- You need one image of the whole scrolling page: the built-in screenshot guide documents screen, region, and window/menu capture, not full-page stitching. Save a PDF or archive with Safari’s built-in options, or use a capture service if a single image is essential.

No. It is generated from the webpage’s print rendering, with layout affected by the page and print settings.
