For a full-page screenshot, use Playwright’s fullPage: true option or Firefox Developer Tools’ full-page capture. Neither tool’s documentation guarantees identical results for fixed and sticky elements on every page, so inspect the image. If a header, floating button, or other control must appear exactly as it does at a particular scroll position, capture that viewport or element separately.
Choose the capture that matches what you need to show
| What you need | Method | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| One tall image of the scrollable page | Playwright fullPage: true or Firefox full-page capture |
Inspect fixed and sticky elements in the result; documented full-page capture does not promise the same rendering for every page and browser. |
| A particular control or region | Playwright locator screenshot or Firefox “Screenshot Node” | Captures the element, not the whole document. |
| What is visible at a particular scroll position | A regular viewport screenshot | Shows the viewport, not the full scrollable page. |
| A more controlled automated image | Playwright screenshot-time stylesheet | Can hide or alter selected content, and may affect the composition. |
Playwright describes its full-page screenshot as a capture of the full scrollable page, “as if you had a very tall screen and the page could fit it entirely.” That describes the capture extent; it does not guarantee that a fixed header or sticky navigation will look the same in every full-page image. See Playwright’s Screenshots documentation and Firefox Developer Tools documentation.
Capture the full page with Playwright
After opening the page in Playwright, call page.screenshot() with fullPage: true. This is the direct option when you want a single image of the full scrollable page.
await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });
For example, in a Node.js script with a page already created and navigated:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
})();
Replace https://example.com with the page you need to capture. The screenshot documentation also covers full-page and element screenshots.
Check how fixed and sticky elements appear
Do not assume a full-page capture will reproduce a fixed-position item exactly once, in its usual viewport state, or at a particular point in the tall image. Fixed and sticky rendering can depend on the page structure and browser implementation; the documented full-page feature establishes the capture extent, not a universal rendering result.
- Generate the full-page image.
- Inspect the header, sticky navigation, floating support button, and any other fixed-position elements in the output.
- If the element’s exact on-screen appearance matters, make a separate viewport capture at the relevant scroll position, or capture that element separately.
- Keep the full-page image as the document view if that is still useful; use the separate capture to show the control’s intended state.
Playwright supports locator-level screenshots. Firefox Developer Tools offers a full-page screenshot and “Screenshot Node” for an individual page element. The official descriptions do not promise identical fixed-element behavior across all browsers, versions, or page structures; verify the output for the browser and page you are using.

Hide or alter an element during a Playwright capture
If an element should not appear in the composite, Playwright can apply a stylesheet for the screenshot. For example, this hides a header matching .site-header:
await page.screenshot({
path: 'full-page.png',
fullPage: true,
style: `.site-header { visibility: hidden !important; }`,
});
The selector must match the actual page. Hiding or changing an element can affect the image’s composition, so inspect the result and make sure it still serves its purpose. Playwright documents screenshot-time stylesheet filtering for controlling dynamic or volatile content in its visual comparisons documentation.

Capture a full page in Firefox Developer Tools
Firefox Developer Tools documents a full-page screenshot button and a Web Console command for full-page capture:
:screenshot --fullpage
For an individual element, use Firefox’s “Screenshot Node” option instead. The full-page option is for the scrollable page; the node option is for a specific element. See Firefox Web Console documentation.

Troubleshooting
- The fixed element looks unexpected in the tall image: Inspect the output rather than assuming full-page capture preserves its normal viewport appearance. Capture the viewport at the desired scroll position or the element separately if that state matters.
- The stylesheet has no effect: Check that the selector matches the live page element. A class or structure different from
.site-headerwill not match the example rule. - The page looks incomplete after hiding an element: A screenshot-time style can change the composition. Review the result and adjust or remove the style if it obscures content or otherwise makes the image unsuitable.
- You need the whole page and an exact control state: These are different capture goals. Keep a full-page image for document extent and make an additional viewport or element capture for the control.
