How to Capture a Full-Page Screenshot in Chrome DevTools for a Report

Capture an entire webpage in Chrome with Device Mode’s “Capture a full size screenshot” option, then check the image for report readability.

To capture a whole webpage in Chrome—not just the part currently visible—open DevTools, turn on Device Mode, then choose More options > Capture a full size screenshot in the device toolbar. Check the resulting image for completeness and legibility before adding it to your report.

Capture the full page in Chrome DevTools

  1. Open the webpage you need to document in Chrome.
  2. Open DevTools. In the DevTools action bar, select Toggle device toolbar to turn on Device Mode.
  3. In the device toolbar, open More options.
  4. Select Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome captures the whole page, including content outside the visible viewport.
  5. Open the resulting image and check that the relevant content is present and readable at the size it will appear in your report.

Do not choose Capture screenshot when you need the entire page: that option captures only the content visible in the viewport.

  • Full page: Use Capture a full size screenshot to include content beyond the viewport.
  • Visible viewport: Use Capture screenshot for the currently visible area.
  • Selected area: Open the Command Menu with Control+Shift+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+P on Mac. Type “screenshot,” choose Capture area screenshot, and drag over the region. DevTools must be docked to the window for area capture.
  • Specific page element: DevTools also supports capturing a node from Elements, including a node larger than the screen.
  • Device presentation: For a device-specific screenshot with a device frame, Chrome documents enabling Show device frame before taking a screenshot. Its documentation does not establish whether the frame is included in a full-size capture, so inspect the output if the frame matters to your report.

Prepare the image for a report

A full-page capture can be much taller than a standard screen image. Before inserting it, confirm that the important sections are visible and that text remains legible at the report’s intended display size. If a single long image would be difficult to read, consider capturing a relevant element or area instead, or use multiple focused images.

Troubleshooting

  • The image shows only the visible screen: You likely selected Capture screenshot. Turn on Device Mode and choose More options > Capture a full size screenshot.
  • You cannot find the full-size option: Make sure Device Mode is on and open More options from the device toolbar, rather than relying on the Command Menu. The documented Command Menu workflow is for area capture; it does not establish a full-size command there.
  • Area capture does not work: Dock DevTools to the browser window, then retry Capture area screenshot.
  • The screenshot is hard to read in the report: Check the image at the size it will be displayed. Capture a smaller, relevant region or element if the full-page image makes details too small.
