First find out who bills your HBO Max subscription: that company controls where you cancel and whether you can switch plans. Sign in at HBOMax.com/subscription, or open HBO Max and go to Profile > Subscription. On a TV, check Settings > Subscription. The billing provider appears near the top of the screen.
How to find out who bills you
Check the Subscription screen before trying to cancel or change your plan. If the provider listed is a third party, such as an app store, TV service, or internet provider, you generally need to manage the subscription through that provider rather than HBO Max. A bank statement or a bundled internet, mobile, or TV bill can also help identify the charge.

How to cancel HBO Max
- Find your billing provider. Sign in at HBOMax.com/subscription, or use Profile > Subscription in the app. On a TV, go to Settings > Subscription.
- If WarnerMedia bills you directly, open HBOMax.com/subscription, select Cancel Your Subscription, and confirm. Note the expiration date shown.
- If a third party bills you, cancel through that provider’s account or subscription settings. The HBO Max Help Center’s cancellation instructions cover providers including Amazon Appstore, Apple, Google Play, Roku, Samsung TV, and internet, mobile, and TV providers. For example, the described Amazon and Roku flows turn off auto-renewal in those accounts, while Apple and Google Play cancellations use their subscription settings. If a menu label has changed, follow the current provider-specific route linked from the Help Center.
- Check for confirmation. Keep the cancellation confirmation and expiration date. The Help Center says Apple, Google Play, Roku, and Amazon send confirmation emails for the flows it describes.
Direct-billed subscribers can continue streaming until the end of the paid billing period. Cancel before the next billing date to avoid another renewal. Deleting the HBO Max app does not cancel the subscription; automatic renewal continues until you cancel through the billing provider.

How to change your HBO Max plan
Use the Subscription screen to identify your billing provider, then follow the plan-management route for that provider. HBO Max says available change options depend on who bills the account; not every subscriber can switch plans directly in the HBO Max app or website. The US plans and prices page lists provider-specific routes, including Amazon Appstore, Apple, Google Play, Roku, Samsung TV, Verizon, WarnerMedia Direct, Cox, Xfinity, and Prime Video Channels.
Prime Video Channels subscriptions
For subscriptions billed through Prime Video Channels, HBO Max instructs subscribers to cancel, wait for the subscription to expire, then resubscribe and select a different plan. This is not an immediate plan switch.

If the change option is unavailable while travelling
The HBO Max help page says a plan change may be unavailable when you are outside the country where the subscription began. Return to that country and try again; if the option still does not appear, contact the billing provider.

These prices and limits are from the official US page as checked October 7, 2026; the page does not provide a publication date. HBO Max says annual billing saves 16% compared with paying monthly for a full year. Sports is included with Standard and Premium, but the sports available and supported formats can vary by event.
What to compare before switching
- Monthly versus annual cost, including the commitment to annual billing.
- Whether the plan includes ads.
- How many people can stream at once.
- Whether you need downloads for offline viewing.
- Whether the resolution and audio formats you want are available on the plan and for the content you watch.
Why there may be no cancel or change button
If HBO Max does not show a cancellation or plan-change option, your subscription may be managed by a different billing provider. Check the provider at the top of the Subscription screen, then use that provider’s controls. If you subscribed through a bundle, the charge may appear on an internet, mobile, or TV account rather than as a direct HBO Max charge.
