To stop a Google Play subscription from renewing, open Google Play’s Subscriptions, select the subscription, tap Cancel subscription, and follow the prompts. Use the Google Account that made the purchase. Uninstalling the app does not cancel billing, and canceling is not the same as getting a refund.
First, identify what you bought and who bills you
“In-app purchase” can mean different things. A recurring subscription renews and can usually be canceled to stop a future renewal. A prepaid subscription runs for a set period, while a payment plan may involve multiple payments already committed to. A one-time purchase—such as a digital item bought once—is not a subscription to cancel; if you want the payment reversed, you need to seek a refund instead.

Before taking action, separate two questions: what billing arrangement did you buy, and which company manages the billing? Google Play’s cancellation route works for a subscription Google Play manages. Some apps use their own billing system or another provider. In that case, the Google Play subscription list may not show the plan, and you must use the provider’s cancellation process. Google’s subscription guidance distinguishes recurring, prepaid, and payment-plan arrangements because cancellation can affect each differently.

A useful way to classify the purchase is to ask whether it renews automatically, whether it has a fixed end date, and whether you agreed to a series of installments. Those distinctions determine whether the immediate task is stopping a renewal, waiting for a paid period to expire, checking remaining installments, or seeking a refund. If you are unsure, check the subscription details in the account or provider that billed you rather than relying only on the app’s name or the fact that you installed it from Google Play.

Google says that after a subscription payment method has been charged for a payment plan, the subscriber remains responsible for the remaining payments. Read the plan’s details rather than treating cancellation of renewal as cancellation of those installments. This matters when a plan is described as a subscription but is actually structured as a set of payments for a commitment already underway.
Cancel a subscription through Google Play on Android
- Open Google Play and check the profile or account indicator to make sure you are using the Google Account that purchased the subscription.
- Open Subscriptions in Google Play.
- Select the subscription you want to end.
- Tap Cancel subscription and complete the on-screen prompts. Follow any questions or options shown until the cancellation is submitted.
- Keep the confirmation email or return to the subscription’s status in Google Play to verify the change.
These are Google’s documented cancellation steps. The names or placement of surrounding menus can vary as the app interface changes, so use the Subscriptions area and the cancellation option displayed for the selected plan rather than relying on a fixed sequence of taps elsewhere in the app. The important part is to finish the on-screen cancellation flow for the correct plan; merely opening the plan details or closing the app is not confirmation that cancellation was submitted.
After completing the prompts, check for a confirmation email or a changed subscription status in Google Play. Keeping that confirmation is sensible in case you later need to check what happened, but it is not a substitute for reviewing the plan’s displayed status. If you do not see a confirmation, return to Subscriptions and inspect the plan rather than assuming it is canceled. If the subscription is still active and the cancellation option remains available, follow the cancellation prompts again and check the resulting status. If the status is unclear, use Google Play’s subscription help or contact the provider that bills you. Avoid relying on an app’s disappearance from your home screen, a sign-out, or removing the app from your phone as evidence that billing has stopped.
If the subscription is missing from Google Play
A missing subscription does not by itself prove that the plan was canceled or that you are not being billed. First check whether Google Play is displaying the account that made the purchase. If you use more than one Google Account on your device, switch accounts and check the Subscriptions area for each one. Google’s subscription troubleshooting guidance specifically advises confirming that the correct account is selected.

If you still cannot find the plan, do not keep repeating the same search under one account. Check every Google Account that might have been used to make the purchase. A plan purchased under a different account may not appear in the account currently selected in Google Play, even if you are using the same Android device or app profile. The relevant account is the one that owns the purchase, not necessarily the account you use most often now.
If it is not listed under any of your Google Accounts, the app may have signed you up through its own system or another billing provider. Check the app’s account settings and help pages for billing or subscription controls. If those do not explain how to end the plan, contact the app developer and ask which provider bills you and how to cancel. The app provider is the appropriate next stop when Google Play does not manage the billing; Google Play’s controls cannot cancel a separate billing agreement.

Treat app access, the subscription itself, and the company that processes billing as separate things: changing one does not necessarily change the others.
- Find the account: Check each Google Account that might have been used for the purchase.
- Find the billing provider: If no account shows the plan, consult the app’s account and help sections or contact its developer.
- Use the provider’s route: Cancel through the company that actually manages the subscription; do not assume Google Play can act on a plan it does not list.
- Confirm the outcome: Once you have used the provider’s cancellation route, look for its confirmation or status indication.
What happens after you cancel
For an ordinary recurring Google Play subscription, cancellation generally prevents the next renewal; it does not usually end access immediately. Google says subscribers generally keep access until the end of the current billing period. That means canceling now and losing access now are not necessarily the same event. Check the plan’s status and displayed end date in Google Play to see the timing for your subscription.
Do not mistake continued access for a failed cancellation. If the status indicates that the subscription is canceled or will end on a displayed date, continued use through the already-paid period is consistent with Google’s ordinary cancellation approach. Conversely, do not mistake the fact that an app stopped working or disappeared for proof that future billing is stopped. The provider’s subscription status is the relevant place to verify cancellation.

A prepaid subscription has a set duration and normally ends when that paid period expires. It does not behave like a recurring plan with a next renewal to stop. Google notes that some unused prepaid subscriptions may be eligible for a refund request, but cancellation and refund are separate actions. If you bought a prepaid period and no longer want to use it, check the status and expiration details; do not assume unused time automatically turns into money back.
A payment plan can have a different result: cancellation may stop a later renewal, but it does not necessarily remove installments already due under the current plan. Google says users remain responsible for remaining payments after the payment method has been charged for a payment plan. Before canceling, or when reviewing a cancellation afterward, distinguish the end of a future renewal from amounts committed to the current plan. If the plan details show remaining payments, cancellation should not be treated as proof that those obligations disappeared.
There are limited regional exceptions to the ordinary treatment of cancellations. Google’s partial-refund guidance identifies options that apply only in Israel, France, Germany, and New York state, with eligibility depending on the location and circumstances. For example, the page describes a New York option after an opt-out price increase and conditions for certain German subscriptions. These are not general rules for every subscriber, nor do they mean that every cancellation in those places leads to a refund. Consult Google’s current partial-refund rules for the location and situation that apply to you.
Canceling is different from requesting a refund
Canceling changes future billing or renewal; it does not automatically return a payment that has already been made. If you want money back for a purchase or renewal, submit a separate refund request through Google Play and check the policy that applies to your purchase and country or region. Eligibility depends on factors such as purchase type, timing, circumstances, and applicable policy, so a recent or accidental charge is not automatically refundable.
Keep the two actions separate even if both concern the same subscription. If the immediate priority is to prevent another renewal, cancel through the billing provider. Then make a refund request for a past charge if you want to seek one. A refund request does not itself stand in for cancellation, and canceling does not itself submit a refund request.

Google provides a refund request process for EEA countries and the UK and separate policy information for apps, games, and in-app purchases in those regions. Its EEA and UK refund policy overview distinguishes digital content from digital services and describes different withdrawal and refund rules. The result depends on the kind of purchase and local circumstances; check the current Google policy rather than assuming the same rule applies across products or countries. These pages describe policy distinctions, not a guarantee that a particular subscription charge will be returned.
If your purchase was a one-time in-app item rather than a recurring subscription, there may be nothing to cancel. The relevant question is whether the purchase can qualify for a refund under the policy applicable to it. Likewise, an unused prepaid subscription may be eligible for a refund request in some cases, but eligibility is not automatic. Use the refund process for the relevant purchase and avoid treating either the purchase type or the fact that it was unused as a promise of reimbursement.

When deciding what to do first, match the action to the problem. For a future charge you want to prevent, locate the active subscription and cancel with its billing provider. For a charge that has already happened, use the separate refund route. For a plan that is not visible, find the correct account or provider before concluding the subscription is gone. For a payment plan, review whether installments remain due rather than assuming the cancellation action removes them.
There is no single outcome that applies to every product called an “in-app purchase.” The key comparison is the billing route, the arrangement, the result you want, and your location. A recurring Google Play plan, a prepaid subscription, a multi-payment plan, a one-time item, and a developer-managed subscription can all have different next steps. Google’s guidance and the app provider’s own cancellation instructions are the appropriate places to verify which situation applies.
