To stop a free offer from becoming a paid subscription, first find out who bills you, then cancel through that company or platform before the trial deadline. Save the confirmation and check your next statement to make sure renewal charges stop.
Check who bills the subscription and when the offer ends
A free offer may renew into paid billing unless you cancel under its terms. Check the signup email, the offer details and the subscription settings in relevant accounts. Note the trial end date, renewal date, cancellation instructions and any stated refund terms. The FTC recommends identifying the company running the subscription, marking the trial deadline and monitoring payment statements (FTC: How To Stop a Subscription; FTC: Negative Option Marketing).

Also check the bank or card statement for the billing descriptor if you are unsure. The company whose service you use may not be the company that processes the subscription: you may have enrolled directly on the merchant’s website or through an app marketplace.
Cancel through the company that bills you

For a platform-billed subscription, cancel with that platform rather than assuming that deleting the service’s app or account will end billing. If you have multiple accounts, make sure you are signed in to the one used to claim the offer.

Keep proof and verify that billing stops
- Save the cancellation confirmation shown on screen and any confirmation email. Take a screenshot if useful.
- If you cancel by phone or chat, write down the date, the representative’s name or identifier if provided, and what was agreed. Keep related messages.
- Check the subscription page for its status and end date, then review the next bank or card statement for a renewal charge.
Canceling does not necessarily mean a refund or immediate loss of access. For example, Google says access generally continues until the end of the current billing period after cancellation. The exact result depends on the plan’s terms, so check the account for the end date and refund policy.
If cancellation fails or a charge continues
Keep records of your attempt and follow up with the billing company in writing where appropriate. If it continues charging after you canceled, contact your credit or debit card issuer promptly to ask about disputing the charge. The FTC also advises keeping records and says consumers can report cancellation problems or unwanted charges to ReportFraud.ftc.gov or their state attorney general (FTC: How To Stop a Subscription; FTC consumer alert on unwanted Amazon Prime enrollment).

The Amazon Prime alert is a reminder to inspect order confirmations and payment statements and to keep written cancellation and refund confirmations. It is not a substitute for the current cancellation instructions for a different provider.

Do not assume there is a single current federal rule requiring every provider to make cancellation as easy as signup. In October 2024, FTC business guidance described the then-final Negative Option Rule and stated, “Make it as easy for people to withdraw from your program as it was to sign up” (FTC business guidance, October 2024). The FTC’s rule page, updated with March 2026 rulemaking information, says the 2024 rule was vacated and describes a new request for public comment about possible rule changes (FTC Negative Option Rule status). Laws and protections can vary by state and circumstance; this general guide is not a legal determination for a particular provider or jurisdiction.
