First identify who bills the subscription
The billing platform, not the app installed on your phone, controls cancellation. Before changing any settings, find the original receipt or the recurring entry on your bank or card statement. Look for the merchant name, the account email, and whether the charge was processed by X, Apple, or Google.

If your statement says X or X Premium, do not search for a separate product called Grok in the store. X says its paid X Subscription includes X Premium benefits and Grok, and existing X Premium subscribers can keep their current plan, price, and features until they choose to switch. Follow the billing record rather than the name you use conversationally.

How to match a receipt to the right account
Use the receipt as the authoritative clue. Note the date, amount, currency, merchant, and account identifier. An X receipt points you to X’s web settings. An Apple receipt identifies the Apple ID that must manage the subscription, while a Google Play receipt identifies the Google account. The X login used inside the app can be different from the store account that paid for it.
If you have more than one card, email address, Apple ID, Google account, or X login, check each one before concluding that the subscription is missing. A family member’s store account or an older login can explain a charge that does not appear in your current account.
Cancel a subscription purchased on the web
Use this route when the receipt or card statement shows that X billed you directly. You must sign in to the X account connected to the subscription; being signed in to a different account can make an active plan appear to be missing.

- Open the X Premium subscription-management area. X may present the paid plan as X Premium or as an X Subscription that includes Grok.
- Open the plan details and choose the cancellation option. Read the confirmation screen carefully so you know whether you are ending automatic renewal rather than immediately deleting access.
- Complete the final confirmation. A back button or closing the page before the last confirmation may leave renewal active.
- Return to the subscription-management screen and check that the plan is marked canceled, non-renewing, or scheduled to end. Save the confirmation email or take a screenshot showing the status and date.
The exact labels can change as X updates its account pages, but the controlling principle is unchanged: a web-billed plan must be canceled in X’s own subscription settings. Removing the X or Grok app from a device does not affect this billing agreement.
Cancel an iPhone or iPad subscription
Use Apple’s subscription controls when the purchase was made inside an iOS or iPadOS app. X directs customers to Apple for app-related cancellation and refund matters. The menu wording can vary by operating-system version, device, and country, so use the Apple ID that appears on the original receipt rather than assuming it is the same account used to sign in to X.
- Open the device’s Apple ID subscription-management screen, normally reached through the Settings app and the Apple ID account area.
- Open the list of active or expired subscriptions and find the listing associated with X, X Premium, or the subscription description shown on your Apple receipt.
- Choose the cancellation command and confirm it. If Apple shows an expiration date instead of a cancellation button, automatic renewal may already be off.
- Capture the confirmation or expiration date. Keep the Apple receipt and the confirmation together until the next billing date has passed.
If the listing is not present, check every Apple ID used on the device and search your email for the receipt. A subscription purchased with a different Apple ID will not appear under the current account. If Apple billed you, contacting X cannot turn off Apple’s renewal; use Apple’s subscription support instead.

Cancel an Android subscription
For a purchase made through Android, use the Google account and Google Play subscription controls that processed the payment. X directs customers to Google for app-related cancellation and refund issues. Google Play labels and navigation can differ by Android version, country, and account configuration.

- Find the subscription entry associated with X, X Premium, or the name displayed in your Google Play receipt.
- Select the cancellation option, follow the prompts, and complete the final confirmation.
- Reopen the subscription details and verify that a renewal date has been replaced by an end date or a canceled status. Save the confirmation page or email.
If nothing appears, switch Google accounts in Google Play and inspect the receipt. A Google Play subscription can belong to an account different from the one currently signed in to the X app. If the charge came from Google, Google—not X—controls the renewal and any app-store refund request.
Cancel early enough to avoid the next charge
X’s published FAQ says: "To avoid further charges, cancel your Premium subscription at least 24 hours before the auto-renewal period." Treat that as X’s timing guidance, not a guarantee that every payment processor will apply a cancellation at the same moment. Do not wait until the renewal day, especially when a charge crosses time zones or a store is processing a pending transaction.
- Check the next renewal date in the platform that bills you.
- Cancel more than 24 hours before that period begins; earlier is safer.
- Verify the canceled or non-renewing status immediately afterward.
- Keep the confirmation until the scheduled renewal has passed and your statement shows no new recurring charge.
Turning off renewal does not usually shorten the period already paid for. You should normally retain Premium and Grok-related features until the displayed end date, even though no further renewal is scheduled.
Why timing can be confusing
A store may display an expiration date while your bank shows a pending authorization, or a payment may have been submitted before you canceled. Compare the transaction timestamp, the renewal date shown by the billing platform, and the cancellation confirmation. A pending entry is not by itself proof that cancellation failed, but a completed new renewal after the cancellation date warrants support contact.
What cancellation does—and does not—do
It stops the next renewal
Cancellation is primarily a billing change. It tells the billing platform not to create the next recurring charge. It is not the same as deleting your X account, removing the app, or immediately erasing every feature.

It normally does not refund the current period
X states that canceling prevents billing for the next payment period but generally does not refund an amount already paid, except where a refund is required by law. If Apple or Google processed the purchase, submit an app-related refund request to that store. Regional consumer rules and the store’s own procedures can change the result, so do not assume that cancellation itself creates a refund.
Access usually continues until the paid period ends
After a successful cancellation, the service normally remains available through the end of the period for which you already paid. The end date shown by X, Apple, or Google is more useful than the date you clicked cancel. A plan that still works after cancellation is not necessarily still renewing.
Use the billing route to diagnose common problems
The app is gone, but the charge continues
Uninstalling the X or Grok app removes local software; it does not cancel a recurring agreement. X expressly warns that uninstalling an app does not automatically cancel a subscription. Reinstalling the app is unnecessary for cancellation. Identify the merchant on your statement and cancel in that merchant’s subscription controls.
No subscription appears in the account you opened
Check for account mismatches before assuming the charge is unauthorized. Compare the email on the receipt with the X login, Apple ID, or Google account currently open. Families and shared devices often have several store accounts. Sign out and inspect each account that could have made the purchase.
You canceled, but another charge arrived
First compare the charge date with the cancellation confirmation. A payment already submitted before cancellation may still settle, while a later renewal indicates that the platform may not have recorded the request. Check the subscription status and contact the billing platform shown on the charge with your confirmation, receipt, transaction identifier, and timestamps. Do not start a second cancellation on a different platform unless the evidence shows that a separate subscription exists.
You cannot access the X account
For a web purchase, account access is normally needed to manage the plan, so use X’s account-recovery and subscription-support channels. For an Apple or Google purchase, the store account remains the controlling place to cancel even if the associated X account is unavailable. Store receipts and the payment account can help support locate the transaction.

The plan is still visible after cancellation
Look for wording such as canceled, non-renewing, or ends on a specific date. Continued access during the paid period is expected. The important test is whether the next renewal has been disabled, not whether every Premium feature disappears immediately.

You see two different subscription entries
Do not assume that one cancellation covers both. X’s product naming can make a Grok-related charge look like an X or X Premium charge, but separate entries on different billing platforms represent separate agreements. Match each entry to its receipt and cancel each unwanted subscription on the platform that bills it.

Do not deactivate an X account as a substitute for normal cancellation. X says that a subscription purchased on x.com is automatically canceled if the account is deactivated, but that behavior does not make deactivation a reliable general method—particularly when you only want to stop billing while keeping the account.
App-store subscriptions are different. X says subscriptions associated with suspended or locked accounts are not automatically canceled. They still must be canceled through Apple or Google, depending on where the purchase was made. If you cannot use the X account because it is suspended or locked, go directly to the store account that holds the recurring payment.
Refunds, legal rights, and disputed charges
Cancellation and refund requests are separate actions. A canceled plan can still have a nonrefundable current period, while a refund request asks the billing platform to reverse an amount already charged. X’s policy is that paid amounts are generally not refunded unless required by law. Apple and Google handle requests for purchases they processed, and their decisions can depend on local rules, transaction timing, and the reason supplied.
- For an X-billed web purchase, use X’s subscription support and include the account and transaction details.
- For an Apple-billed purchase, use Apple’s purchase-support or refund process for the Apple ID that paid.
- For a Google-billed purchase, use Google Play’s purchase-support or refund process for the Google account that paid.
- Keep copies of receipts, cancellation confirmations, support case numbers, and bank statements.
If you do not recognize the charge at all, treat it as a possible unauthorized transaction: secure the relevant account, review other subscriptions, and contact the payment provider promptly. Do not rely solely on deleting the app or deactivating an X account.
What to save before contacting support
Support can act faster when you provide the billing platform’s own identifiers. Gather the receipt, merchant name, transaction or order number, amount and currency, date of charge, account email, and a screenshot showing the cancellation or renewal status. Redact unrelated card numbers and other sensitive information. Describe whether you want to stop a future renewal, request a refund, or report an unrecognized charge; those are different requests.
A practical cancellation checklist
- Find the receipt or card-statement merchant.
- Classify the charge as X web, Apple, or Google.
- Open the matching subscription-management screen.
- Cancel at least 24 hours before the stated auto-renewal period, preferably earlier.
- Complete the final confirmation rather than leaving the page halfway through.
- Verify a canceled, non-renewing, or end-date status.
- Save the confirmation and receipt.
- Continue using the service until the paid end date if you wish; cancellation normally does not cut off the period already purchased.
- After the renewal date passes, check the statement for an unexpected recurring charge.

The safest rule is simple: cancel where the money was taken. Once the correct platform shows that renewal is off, keep the proof and wait for the paid period to end rather than trying to force an immediate cutoff.
