Google says almost all such calls are free, though calls to a few numbers cost $0.01 per minute. The free-call claim does not apply to every country or destination: calls outside the US use Google’s listed rates, and access to Google Voice depends on your location and eligibility.
What you need to know before calling
- Where the free rate applies: Google’s statement is for calls placed from the US. Almost all calls to US and Canadian numbers are free; a few cost $0.01 per minute. Other destinations have listed rates. Google’s computer calling and rate information lets you check details.
- Computer browser: Google lists Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and Safari for browser calling.
- Account availability: Setup depends on location and eligibility. Google’s setup information is US-focused; check whether you can get a number with your account before relying on the service.
- Emergency calls: Google Voice calls from a computer cannot be used to contact emergency services.
How to call a landline from your computer with Google Voice
Google Voice provides a phone number for calls, texts, and voicemail. Once your account is set up, calls to a conventional phone number can be placed in a supported browser.

- Open Google Voice setup and availability information and confirm the service is available to you. US users can search for available numbers by city or area code; number availability and eligibility can vary.
- On your computer, open Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, or Safari and go to Google Voice.
- Open the Calls area, or enter the contact name or phone number you want to call.
- Start the call and use your computer’s microphone and speakers, or connect a headset with a microphone if you prefer. A headset is optional.

Google does not describe every computer-to-phone call as free. From the US, almost all calls to US and Canadian numbers are free, but a few cost $0.01 per minute. Calls to destinations outside the US use rates listed by Google, which vary by destination. Check the rate for the exact number or destination before calling rather than assuming an international call is included.
#1 Best Overall
- Digital Stereo Sound: Fine-tuned drivers provide enhanced digital audio for music, calls, meetings and more
- Rotating Noise Canceling Mic: Minimizes unwanted background noise for clear conversations; the rotating boom arm can be tucked out of the way when you’re not using it
- Handy In-line Controls: Simple in-line controls on the headset cable let you adjust the volume or mute calls without disruption
- Plug-and-Play USB Computer Headset: Simply plug the USB-A connector into your computer and you’re ready to talk or listen without the need to install software
- Padded Comfort: Comfortable headphones with adjustable headband features swivel-mounted, leatherette ear cushions for hours of comfort and is easy to clean
A call also depends on your internet connection. Google says an unstable connection may prompt a switch to phone-plan minutes, which could incur carrier charges. If that happens, check your device and call settings and make sure you understand whether the call is using internet calling or your phone plan.
Data use and audio setup
Google estimates that a Voice call over the internet uses about 0.2 MB of data per minute. That is an approximate figure from Google, not a guarantee for every network or call; actual use can depend on network quality and speed. Google also notes that some features are unavailable on computer or mobile. Google’s internet-calling information covers data use and feature limitations.

- How it Fits: On-ear compact design may feel snug initially—adjust properly and wear 30-60 minutes daily for the first week. Optimal comfort achieved after 1-2 weeks as ear cups conform to your ears. Take 10-minute breaks during extended use.
- Wired computer headset with foldable design; ideal for calls, meetings, online learning, and more. Compact headset measures 6.1" W x 7.2" H with 2.8" ear cups and 4.4" boom mic. Ideal fit for small to medium head sizes
- Flexible, adjustable boom mic can be positioned at any angle; unidirectional mic reduces the background noise to ensure crisp, bright conversations (Provided that your conversation is under the correct direction of the microphone)
- 32mm speaker drivers offer an immersive listening experience with clear sound quality
- One-touch mute/unmute with intuitive in-line control box; Using microphone, slide the button upward to unmute and enabled audio settings in your device. For USB connection, ensure the 3.5mm jack (4-pin) is fully inserted into the USB adapter. For direct 3.5mm connection, first remove the USB adapter from your device
Your computer needs a working microphone and audio output. Built-in hardware may be enough; a USB headset with microphone is an optional alternative if your room is noisy or your computer’s audio is inconvenient. It does not change the service’s eligibility rules or the rate charged for a destination.

Skype is no longer a general-purpose free landline-calling option for new users. Microsoft says Skype retired in May 2025 and Skype Number subscriptions ended in May 2026. Its Dial Pad remains accessible only to users with an active subscription, active Skype Number, or Skype Credit, so continued access is a restricted legacy path, not a service new readers can count on for free calls.

Google lists a no-charge option alongside standalone paid Voice plans for eligible personal Gmail users in the US. Its help page lists Voice Starter at $10 per month and Voice Standard at $20 per month; those are stated plan prices and can change. A paid subscription is not identified as a requirement for the basic no-charge option, and buying a plan does not make every destination call free. See Google Voice plan information.

Calling from outside the US
The clearest free-call claim is limited to calls made from the US to almost all US and Canadian numbers. The available information does not establish eligibility or rates for every origin country, nor a complete comparison of other providers around the world. If you are outside the US or calling another country, confirm that a service is available where you live and check its official rate for your destination before placing the call.
