The right choice depends first on what you need the VPN to do—connect two office networks, give a remote user access, or route traffic through a commercial privacy VPN—and then on your exact router model and firmware. Cisco’s RV documentation lists different client and protocol options by model family; it does not establish that a consumer VPN service can be installed on every Cisco router.
First decide what you want the VPN to do
“VPN for Cisco routers” can describe several different network jobs. They are not interchangeable, and a router feature or VPN client is not automatically a subscription to a consumer privacy service.

| VPN job | What it connects | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Site-to-site | Two networks in separate locations, such as two offices | That both router models support compatible tunnel settings, and that the networks and WAN/firewall conditions allow a tunnel |
| Remote access | An individual user connecting to an organization’s network | Which client and protocol the exact Cisco model and firmware support |
| Consumer VPN traffic routing | A home or small-office network routing internet traffic through a commercial VPN provider | Whether the provider documents a configuration for the exact router model; compatibility is not established for Cisco routers in general |
Cisco’s RV160/RV260 configuration guide is specifically about creating a site-to-site VPN, not selecting a commercial privacy provider. Cisco’s RV160 and RV260 site-to-site guide is therefore relevant only if that is your intended setup.
Which VPN client works with a Cisco RV router?
Check the exact RV family in Cisco’s compatibility material before choosing a client. The examples below reflect entries in Cisco’s RV family compatibility table; “not listed” means that option is not shown for that family in the cited table, not proof that it can never work in any configuration.

- Dual Gigabit Ethernet WAN ports for load balancing and business continuity
- Easily manages large files and concurrent users to keep employees productive
- Connects multiple locations and remote workers using VPN
- High capacity, high-performance SSL and IP Security VPN capabilities
| RV family | OpenVPN listed | AnyConnect listed |
|---|---|---|
| RV32X | Yes | Not listed |
| RV160X/RV260X | Yes | Not listed |
| RV34X | Not listed | Yes |
These distinctions come from Cisco’s RV VPN overview and best-practices page. Do not apply this RV-family table to Cisco ISR/IOS XE routers or Meraki MX products; their features and configuration paths are not established by this RV guidance. Cisco also names third-party clients including Shrew Soft and TheGreenBow, but says those non-Cisco products are not supported by Cisco. That is a support-responsibility caveat, not a claim that the clients never work.
How to set up a VPN on a Cisco router
Start with the job and model, then follow documentation written for that exact device and firmware. For an RV160/RV260 site-to-site connection, Cisco’s guide supplies the relevant configuration example; its sample addresses and pre-shared key are illustrative and should not be copied into a production network.

- 【Flexible Port Configuration】1 Gigabit SFP WAN Port + 1 Gigabit WAN Port + 2 Gigabit WAN/LAN Ports plus1 Gigabit LAN Port. Up to four WAN ports optimize bandwidth usage through one device.
- 【Increased Network Capacity】Maximum number of associated client devices – 150,000. Maximum number of clients – Up to 700.
- 【Integrated into Omada SDN】Omada’s Software Defined Networking (SDN) platform integrates network devices including gateways, access points & switches with multiple control options offered – Omada Hardware controller, Omada Software Controller or Omada cloud-based controller(Contact TP-Link for Cloud-Based Controller Plan Details). Standalone mode also applies.
- 【Cloud Access】Remote Cloud access and Omada app brings centralized cloud management of the whole network from different sites—all controlled from a single interface anywhere, anytime.
- 【SDN Compatibility】For SDN usage, make sure your devices/controllers are either equipped with or can be upgraded to SDN version. SDN controllers work only with SDN Gateways, Access Points & Switches. Non-SDN controllers work only with non-SDN APs. For devices that are compatible with SDN firmware, please visit TP-Link website.
- Identify the hardware and software. Record the full model number and firmware version at both locations. Confirm the intended VPN type and consult the corresponding current Cisco documentation.
- Check network prerequisites. For an RV160/RV260 site-to-site tunnel, the LAN subnet at one end must differ from the LAN subnet at the other end. Confirm each end’s WAN addressing, NAT behavior, and firewall rules. Cisco notes that firewall exemptions may be needed at both ends for RV VPN connections.
- Choose matching tunnel settings. Configure both routers with corresponding tunnel parameters. The local and remote values are reversed at the opposite end: what is local to one router is remote to the other. Use your own network addresses and a strong, unique pre-shared key rather than values shown in an example.
- Apply settings at both ends and validate. Confirm that the tunnel establishes and that devices on each side can reach the intended remote network. If it does not, recheck the matching parameters, distinct LAN subnets, WAN/NAT conditions, and any firewall exemptions.
These steps describe the planning and configuration logic for an RV160/RV260 site-to-site tunnel. A remote-access setup or a consumer-provider configuration is a different workflow and requires instructions that specifically cover the chosen model and VPN type.

Cisco’s VPN Setup Wizard documentation gives these tunnel counts for the named models. They are model-specific figures, not a general capacity claim for Cisco routers.

| Model | Tunnels in Cisco’s wizard documentation | Lifecycle note |
|---|---|---|
| RV160 | 10 | Cisco lists support ending 31 October 2026 |
| RV260 | 20 | Cisco lists support ending 31 October 2026 |
The counts are from Cisco’s RV160/RV260 VPN Setup Wizard guidance. They are only one part of a buying decision: confirm that the model meets your throughput, WAN, security-update, client, and management needs.
Cisco’s RV Series support page lists 31 October 2026 as the support end date for RV160 and RV260 models. That date is approaching as of 4 October 2026. Recheck the lifecycle listing for your specific model and region before buying or depending on continued support; availability and lifecycle details can change.

So, what is the best VPN for a Cisco router?
For an RV router, the best-supported starting point is the VPN workflow and client Cisco lists for that exact family—not a generic “best VPN” ranking. For an RV160/RV260 pair connecting two locations, Cisco provides model-specific site-to-site instructions, but the support end date makes lifecycle status a critical buying consideration. If you want to route traffic through a consumer VPN subscription, do not assume compatibility: get confirmation in official documentation from both the provider and Cisco for the exact router and configuration method.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsNo current provider offer or price is established here, so there is no evidence-based subscription deal to recommend. Before spending money, verify model, firmware, use case, supported client/protocol, lifecycle, any required license, and whether the configuration is supported by the relevant vendor.
