To recalibrate an external sensor, first confirm you have the original Oculus Rift: after moving one of its Constellation sensors, keep the headset nearly still for a few seconds while it remains in the sensor’s view. Rift S and Quest use built-in inside-out tracking and do not use the original Rift’s external-sensor procedure.
How do I calibrate my Oculus sensor?
These steps apply to the original Oculus Rift with external Constellation sensors. They do not apply to Rift S or Quest.

- Identify the headset. Original Rift uses external sensors; Rift S and Quest track from cameras built into the headset. Meta describes these as different tracking architectures: Rift sensor documentation and Meta’s Oculus Insight explanation.
- Run Rift Setup. Use Meta’s Rift Setup path to configure and test the original Rift runtime and hardware.
- Keep the headset in view. Position yourself within the sensor’s tracking frustum—the area the sensor can see. Meta’s developer documentation gives typical values of 74° horizontally, 54° vertically, and near and far planes of 0.4 m and 2.5 m. These are representative technical values, not a guarantee for every room or placement.
- After moving a sensor, pause. Hold the headset nearly still for a few seconds inside the tracking frustum. Meta’s OculusWorldDemo guidance says this gives the system time to recalibrate the sensor pose.
Why is my Oculus Rift losing tracking?
Original Rift combines inertial measurements—including gyroscope, accelerometer, and magnetometer data—with sensor-based position tracking. If positional tracking is interrupted, check the conditions that affect whether the external sensor can see and follow the headset.

- Occlusion: Check whether an object or your body is blocking the sensor’s view of the headset.
- Headset orientation: Turn so the hardware can track the headset effectively.
- Movement: If tracking drops during fast movement, pause within view and allow it to recover.
Meta’s documentation says tracking normally resumes quickly once the interruption conditions clear. The SDK reports positional tracking state, which can change while the application is running; the documentation does not provide a consumer calibration success rate or a general accuracy figure.

Do I need external sensors for Rift S or Quest?
No. The original Rift uses external Constellation sensors; Rift S and Quest use inside-out tracking, so the original Rift external-sensor setup and recalibration steps do not apply. Meta’s engineering description of Oculus Insight says it uses headset IMUs, cameras, and infrared LEDs. Its reported testing across hundreds of environments and replay of thousands of hours of recorded video describe engineering work, not a consumer accuracy guarantee.
