A foldable is worth its extra cost only when the value you personally get from its folding design over the time you plan to own it exceeds the added cost of buying and maintaining it. Compare it with a conventional phone at the same storage capacity, in your market, on the same purchase date—and include protection, repair scenarios, financing and resale rather than comparing sticker prices alone.
Calculate the total cost over your ownership period
Choose the number of years you expect to keep each phone, then use the same period for both. For each device, estimate:

Net purchase cost is the price you can actually get after eligible discounts and trade-in—not a suggested retail price or an offer you cannot use. Keep the purchase date, retailer, region, storage tier, taxes and financing terms consistent between the two phones. Use realistic resale proceeds for your market and ownership period; if you cannot find a defensible estimate, leave resale out of both calculations rather than guessing.

A foldable case is an optional added cost. Samsung says compatible cases are model-specific and commonly use two parts with adhesive strips; check compatibility for the exact phone. A case should not be treated as proof against inner-screen or hinge failure. Samsung’s case installation guidance
Compare repair and protection scenarios without guessing failure odds
Do not assign a probability to a screen or hinge failure unless you have credible, comparable failure-rate data for the exact models. Instead, calculate separate scenarios for both phones:
- No repair: Include the costs you expect even if neither phone needs a repair.
- One quoted repair: Add a local out-of-warranty screen or hinge repair quote to the relevant phone’s cost. Use quotes for the exact model and market.
- Protection-plan claim: Add the plan premiums and applicable deductible, and check what damage is covered, claim limits, exclusions and the repair process.
Manufacturer terms are local, so verify the details that apply where you live. Motorola’s U.S. support page says physical and liquid damage are outside its standard warranty; deductibles and repair paths depend on the plan. Price the specific benefit you expect to use
The extra cost buys a form factor, not a guaranteed productivity gain or a fixed amount of savings. Decide what the folding design changes in your own routine, and count only benefits you expect to use regularly.
Book-style Fold
A book-style foldable opens to a larger inner screen that may suit reading, media and running apps side by side. Samsung describes these as potential uses, including tablet-like multitasking, but that is manufacturer positioning rather than independent proof of greater productivity. In a Samsung Newsroom Singapore Q&A published 2 September 2026, a Samsung executive characterized the Galaxy Z Fold8 as suited to entertainment, reading and media, and the Fold8 Ultra as suited to multitasking and productivity. Flip-style foldable
A vertically folding Flip emphasizes a more compact folded body and can support hands-free camera use. These benefits matter if you value pocketability, self-expression or shooting without holding the phone; they do not automatically offset a price premium. Samsung Newsroom Singapore Q&A

Check the daily trade-offs and durability claims
Include the practical effects of living with each phone: folded size, weight, battery and camera needs, and whether you are comfortable handling a flexible screen and hinge. Samsung notes that its foldables cost more and require careful handling. Samsung Canada’s Galaxy Z Fold guide
Samsung UK says its flagship foldables are rated for 2–5 years and more than 300,000 folds. That is a manufacturer rating, not an independent comparison of real-world failure probabilities against conventional phones; it cannot tell you the chance or cost of a particular repair. For water resistance, Samsung Canada states that IP48 testing covers freshwater up to 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes. Use a side-by-side worksheet
Fill in local, model-specific numbers for the same ownership period. If you do not have a supported figure for a line, mark it unknown rather than inventing one.

Subtract the conventional phone’s expected ownership cost from the foldable’s. The difference is the foldable’s extra cost for that scenario. Then ask whether the specific screen, compactness or camera benefit is worth that amount to you. Because prices, coverage, repairs and resale vary by model, region and timing, there is no reliable universal dollar threshold or break-even claim.
