For a 4K/60 YouTube Live loop, plan for about 44 Mbps of sustained upload capacity with AV1 or H.265, or 63 Mbps with H.264, before accounting for other upload traffic. These figures apply YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom to its recommended video ingest bitrates; they are planning targets, not guarantees.
Calculate the upload speed you need
Start with the recommended video ingest bitrate for your encoder’s codec, add any other upload traffic that will share the connection, then divide the total by 0.8 to leave YouTube’s recommended 20% of upload capacity in reserve. Use measured upload speed, not download speed.

- Choose the codec and bitrate. For 4K/2160p at 60 fps, YouTube recommends 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC, and 50 Mbps for H.264. These are video ingest bitrates, not connection-speed targets. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table also lists lower minimum ingest rates, but a minimum is not the recommended upload capacity for a reliable stream.
- Add competing uploads. Include simultaneous uploads from other devices or applications in the total outbound demand. For example, if other activity uses 5 Mbps, add that to the stream’s recommended bitrate before applying headroom.
- Divide by 0.8. The calculation is (stream bitrate + other upload traffic) ÷ 0.8. This reserves 20% of capacity rather than trying to use every available Mbps.
- Compare with sustained upload speed. Run an upload speed test on the connection you will stream from, and consider how much capacity other people and devices use. A plan’s advertised speed or a download test does not establish the upload available to the encoder.
- Test the real setup. Send representative audio and movement, then check YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test. YouTube recommends testing before an event; its guidance does not specify a minimum test duration or guarantee a speed-test result will persist during a long-running loop.
Targets with no other upload traffic
| Codec | YouTube-recommended 4K/60 video ingest bitrate | Upload capacity after 20% headroom |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 35 Mbps | 35 ÷ 0.8 = 43.75 Mbps; plan for about 44 Mbps |
| H.264 | 50 Mbps | 50 ÷ 0.8 = 62.5 Mbps; plan for about 63 Mbps |
The 35 Mbps and 50 Mbps values are YouTube’s recommended ingest rates for 4K/2160p at 60 fps; its table separately lists minimum rates of 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 14 Mbps for H.264. The 20% reserve comes from YouTube’s streaming tips. A connection that merely meets a codec’s ingest minimum is not the same as one meeting the recommended capacity target.

Use the right YouTube encoder settings
The bitrate calculation is only useful when the encoder is configured for the intended format. YouTube’s live guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among the encoder options, recommends CBR, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds.

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
- For 4K/60 SDR: select the codec your encoder and YouTube ingest path support, and use its corresponding recommended bitrate above.
- For HDR: YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Do not assume the AV1 target applies to HDR.
- For latency: YouTube says low latency is unavailable at 4K/2160p; 4K streams are set to normal latency.
- For a loop: the stream still needs its configured video bitrate continuously. The fact that the content repeats does not reduce the live connection’s ongoing upload demand.
Estimate data use for a continuous loop
A longer loop does not change the sustained Mbps target, but it increases how much data is sent. For a rough decimal estimate, use:
Mbps × hours × 0.45 = approximate GB sent
For example, a 35 Mbps stream running for 24 hours gives 35 × 24 × 0.45, or about 378 GB. This is a unit-conversion estimate, not a measured YouTube usage figure; overhead and operating conditions can change actual data use.

Diagnose bandwidth-related stream problems
YouTube says total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. Upload capacity can be lower than expected when a connection is shared, and an interruption can break a stream.

- Stream health reports insufficient bandwidth or the stream drops: compare the measured upload speed with the calculated target, including competing uploads. Reduce other outbound traffic or lower the stream bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the target.
- Download speed looks high, but the stream struggles: test upload speed specifically. Download capacity is not a substitute for outbound capacity.
- Results vary during the day: retest under the conditions and on the network you will actually use. A single speed-test result cannot guarantee that capacity will remain available during a long loop.
- Wireless performance is inconsistent: a wired Ethernet connection can be an optional way to improve the reliability of the local network link. It cannot increase the upload capacity provided by your internet plan, and it is not necessary when your existing connection is reliable.
Or let it run in the cloud
If maintaining the connection and encoder yourself is the difficult part, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
