Calculate forward EV/EBIT by dividing enterprise value on a stated valuation date by forecast EBIT for a stated future period: Forward EV/EBIT = enterprise value ÷ forecast EBIT. EBIT is also called operating profit or operating earnings. The result is usually expressed as a multiple, such as 12.0x. To make it interpretable, identify the forecast period, estimate source, and enterprise-value definition you used.
What forward EV/EBIT measures
EV/EBIT compares the value of an entire business with its operating earnings before interest and taxes. CFA Institute describes enterprise-value multiples as relating the total market value of a company’s capital to a fundamental measure for the entire company: CFA Institute’s overview of enterprise-value multiples.

- Set the valuation date. Use the enterprise value as of that date. For company comparisons, use the same valuation date where possible.
- Define enterprise value. One simplified construction is equity value plus debt value. A cited valuation report uses this relationship in its EV/EBIT definition, but it is not a complete universal EV build: Grant Thornton Austria valuation report. State any material adjustments included in your own EV calculation.
- Name the forward period. Specify whether the forecast covers the next twelve months (NTM), the next fiscal year, or another period.
- Choose the matching EBIT forecast. Divide by the estimate for that exact horizon. Keep numerator and denominator in the same currency and scale, such as both in millions of euros.
- Report the result as a multiple. For example, write “12.0x,” not a percentage or a payback period.
Choose the forecast period, not just a forecast number
“Forward” is incomplete unless readers know which future period the denominator represents. Grant Thornton Austria distinguishes a trailing multiple based on the latest published company financial information from a one-year forward multiple using analyst EBIT estimates for the next twelve months. See its valuation report.
Next-twelve-month EBIT and next-fiscal-year EBIT are not interchangeable: fiscal-year boundaries can make their coverage differ. Label the period explicitly, and do not describe historical EBIT as forward EBIT. Forecast provider and estimate date also matter because estimates can change.

If EV is €2,400 million and forecast EBIT is €200 million for the stated period, the arithmetic is €2,400 million ÷ €200 million = 12.0x. These figures are illustrative only.

EV/EBIT is often used to compare companies without focusing on how each finances its operations; the cited valuation report describes that comparative use. It does not eliminate differences in business risk, growth, accounting, capital intensity, or forecast quality. A lower multiple alone does not establish that a company is cheap, and there is no universal fair EV/EBIT threshold established by these sources. A useful interpretation requires relevant peers, a defined date, and context for operating performance.
