How to Evaluate a College Football Backup Quarterback Before Game Day

To evaluate a college football backup quarterback before game day, judge whether he can run his team’s offense under realistic conditions—not whether he produced an eye-catching practice stat. Look for command and communication first, then repeatable technique, sound decisions, ball security, pocket awareness and execution with the available teammates. Use practice and scrimmage film across multiple situations, and account for what the team’s scheme and personnel actually ask the quarterback to do.

Start with command of the offense

A backup must be able to operate the offense the team plans to use, not merely complete a throw in an isolated drill. On film or in practice, look for whether he can get the unit aligned, communicate the call and adjustments, and keep all 11 players coordinated from the sideline through the snap.

Assess the concepts that matter to that team: its run game, run-pass options (RPOs), drop-back passing and play-action. Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel described control and command across those areas as part of quarterback evaluation in August 2026. His criteria are useful examples, not a universal formula for every program. Tennessee Athletics, Aug. 24, 2026.

Check fundamentals, decisions and ball security

Look for repeatable technique

Review ordinary reps as well as pressured ones. A clean throw with no disruption shows only part of the picture; note whether the quarterback’s mechanics and technique remain consistent when the pocket changes or the play does not unfold as designed.

Judge the read as well as the result

For each meaningful rep, consider the decision process alongside the outcome: Was the read appropriate, and did he preserve possession? A completion or incompletion alone does not tell you whether the quarterback made the right choice. Heupel identified decision-making and taking care of the football as areas of progress in Tennessee’s scrimmage evaluation. Tennessee Athletics, Aug. 22, 2026.

Watch pocket awareness and movement—with a live-play caveat

Track how the quarterback responds to pressure: Can he manipulate the pocket, protect the ball inside and outside it, and choose sensibly between extending the play and taking positive yards? These are distinct from arm strength or a highlight scramble; they show how he handles a play that becomes less predictable.

Scrimmage rules can limit live tackling, so scrimmage tape may show movement and ball security without proving how a quarterback finishes through contact. Heupel noted that Tennessee’s quarterbacks were protected in its scrimmage while coaches could still observe their pocket work and ball security. Tennessee Athletics, Aug. 22, 2026.

Separate quarterback execution from teammate results

A pass result is shared evidence: route execution, coverage, protection and the quarterback’s timing all contribute. Review whether he connects with receivers and tight ends on time, handles the pressure created by the protection, and gives playmakers a chance to make a play. Do not credit or blame the quarterback for every completion or failure without checking what happened around him.

Use situations that resemble the job

Readiness is easier to assess when practice or scrimmage includes the demands the backup may face. Look for work in:

  • Third down and short-yardage situations
  • The red zone
  • Two-minute offense
  • Team-specific situations and field positions
  • Crowd-noise or road-like communication conditions, where available

Tennessee reported using crowd noise and specific situations and yardage in its August 2026 scrimmage. Such work can reveal communication and decision-making under constraints that a quiet, unpressured drill will not reproduce. Tennessee Athletics, Aug. 22, 2026.

Compare candidates on the same evidence

When several quarterbacks are competing, use the same categories and comparable situations for each. Weight them according to the offense, personnel and likely game plan rather than treating every skill as equally important for every team.

Category What to assess
Command and communication Alignment, clarity and coordination from call to snap
Core offensive concepts Execution in the team’s run game, RPOs, drop-backs and play-action
Decisions and ball security Read quality and possession protection, considered together
Pocket and movement skills Response to pressure, pocket manipulation and sensible choices to move or take yards
Situational and noisy settings Execution in relevant down-and-distance, field-position and communication conditions
Preparation and engagement Game-plan understanding, sustained practice work and readiness to take reps

Preparation and engagement are supporting indicators, not substitutes for execution. Revisit the body of work rather than letting one practice period or completion percentage decide the comparison. Tennessee’s coach described the decision as holistic and tied to the team’s needs and each player’s total work; the available criteria do not establish a validated universal scorecard or statistical threshold for backup readiness. Tennessee Athletics, Aug. 22, 2026.

Keep game-day rules and technology in context

Game-day communication and sideline tools depend on current rules and the team’s division. The NCAA’s football rules page links its official rule book, case books and football updates: NCAA Football Rules of the Game. NCAA-approved optional technology rules effective in 2024 allowed FBS schools to use coach-to-player helmet communication to one player and allowed tablets for in-game video in all three divisions. That is historical context, not a guarantee of the rule for every later season; check the current-season rules before drawing conclusions about a particular team’s game-day setup.
