How to Bypass Varnish Cache for Logged-In Admins on WordPress

A practical VCL guide for bypassing Varnish on WordPress admin, login, preview, and logged-in requests without exposing personalized pages through a shared cache.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Varnish’s vcl_recv stage to send WordPress administration, login, preview, and authenticated requests to return (pass). Varnish’s built-in policy already passes requests carrying a Cookie or Authorization header, while responses that set cookies are protected from normal shared storage. Add explicit URL rules for WordPress administration paths, install them in the active VCL configuration, reload through your host’s documented process, and verify that both anonymous and logged-in traffic reach the correct cache path.

What bypassing Varnish means for WordPress

A Varnish bypass does not disable caching for your entire site. It tells Varnish not to look up or store a shared cache object for a particular request. The request is sent to the WordPress backend instead.

That distinction matters because an administration page, login form, preview, or personalized front-end response can contain state belonging to one user. If a shared cache serves that response to another visitor, private information or account controls could be exposed. The normal Varnish behavior is conservative: a request with a Cookie or Authorization header is passed, and a backend response with Set-Cookie is not stored as an ordinary shared object.

For WordPress, the practical baseline is therefore:

  • Pass wp-login.php and the /wp-admin/ area explicitly.

  • Keep Varnish’s built-in cookie and authorization rule unless you have tested every personalized response your site emits.
  • Use pass, not pipe, for an ordinary HTTP cache bypass.

Varnish’s default protection for authenticated requests

Varnish’s built-in VCL includes a rule equivalent to:

if (req.http.Authorization || req.http.Cookie) {
    return (pass);
}

Any request carrying either header is sent through the pass path rather than using a shared cached object. A logged-in WordPress browser normally sends cookies, so this default covers authenticated administration and many logged-in front-end requests without a custom cookie expression.

The same safety model applies on the response side. Built-in backend behavior treats a response containing Set-Cookie as uncacheable, preventing private session state from being stored as a normal shared object. Do not remove or weaken these protections merely to increase cache hits. If you strip cookies, ignore them, or normalize them in custom VCL, you assume responsibility for proving that the affected responses are identical for every visitor.

Recommended baseline VCL for WordPress

Varnish Software’s WordPress example explicitly passes administration, login, and preview requests. A minimal VCL configuration based on that pattern is:

vcl 4.1;

sub vcl_recv {
    if (req.url ~ "wp-(login|admin)" || req.url ~ "preview=true") {
        return (pass);
    }
}

The expression matches URLs containing wp-login or wp-admin, and it passes any URL containing the preview query string. In a normal WordPress installation, that covers /wp-login.php, the /wp-admin/ interface, and preview links generated with preview=true.

Place this logic in the VCL that is actually loaded by the Varnish instance serving your site. A snippet saved in an unused file, a disabled host template, or a configuration that is later overridden by a CDN will not change request handling.

Why the rule belongs in vcl_recv

vcl_recv runs when Varnish receives the client request, before a shared cache lookup. Returning pass there tells Varnish to fetch the request from the backend without using a cached object. The official Varnish description is precise: “Requests that end up in vcl_pass will bypass the cache, and will result in an uncacheable backend fetch.”

pipe is a different connection mode intended for traffic that should be forwarded with minimal HTTP processing. It is not the normal solution for WordPress login or administration URLs. Using pipe when you only need a cache bypass can change how Varnish handles the connection and removes protections you still want the HTTP state machine to apply.

Covering a custom administration path

Some WordPress deployments expose an application administration subtree under a custom path. A URL-only rule can pass that subtree:

sub vcl_recv {
    if (req.url ~ "^/admin($|/.*)") {
        return (pass);
    }
}

This regular expression matches /admin and anything below it, while avoiding unrelated paths such as /administrator. The exact path is illustrative. WordPress normally uses /wp-admin and /wp-login.php; if a security plugin or deployment changes the login URL, add the site-specific path to the pass logic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not replace the standard WordPress rule with a custom path unless you have confirmed the complete login and administration URL set. A renamed login endpoint, an AJAX endpoint, a preview route, or a front-end page that changes after authentication can otherwise fall outside the URL rule. The built-in cookie pass remains the broader safety net for requests that carry session state.

Choosing between URL and cookie bypass rules

There are two common ways to define the bypass boundary. URL rules are straightforward and easy to audit. Cookie rules cover authenticated pages that do not use an administration URL, but they require careful matching and testing.

Approach Coverage Cache behavior for anonymous visitors Operational complexity Main risk
URL-only bypass Known paths such as wp-login.php, /wp-admin/, preview URLs, and any documented custom login path Public URLs outside the matched patterns can remain cacheable Lower; the matched paths are visible in one expression A personalized endpoint outside the list may not be passed
Logged-in-cookie bypass Authenticated front-end requests identified by the WordPress login cookie, in addition to explicit administration and login paths Anonymous requests without the matched cookie can remain cacheable Higher; cookie names, combinations, and application responses must be understood An incomplete or over-broad cookie expression can expose state or reduce cacheability

For most sites, keep the explicit URL rule and Varnish’s default “any Cookie or Authorization header” pass. Add a narrower cookie condition only when you have a documented requirement to handle authenticated front-end pages that are not reliably covered by the default or by URL patterns.

Adding a targeted logged-in cookie condition

When you deliberately want a cookie-specific rule, match the WordPress logged-in cookie in req.http.Cookie and return pass. A typical pattern is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sub vcl_recv {
    if (req.url ~ "wp-(login|admin)" || req.url ~ "preview=true") {
        return (pass);
    }

    if (req.http.Cookie ~ "wordpress_logged_in_") {
        return (pass);
    }
}

The cookie name and expression must match your installation. WordPress commonly prefixes its logged-in cookie with wordpress_logged_in_, but a deployment can add, rename, or supplement cookies. Inspect the actual request headers from a logged-in browser before narrowing the expression.

Do not delete the built-in generic cookie rule while adding a targeted condition. Unknown cookies can still personalize a response, and future plugins may introduce state that your current expression does not recognize. A targeted rule is an additional optimization or coverage measure, not permission to assume that every other cookie is harmless.

How to install the rule safely

  1. Map the request path. Identify every layer between the browser and WordPress: a CDN, a hosting-provider cache, one or more Varnish instances, a reverse proxy, and the web server. A rule on an inner Varnish instance cannot override a CDN that serves the response first.
  2. Find the active VCL source. Use your host’s control panel or deployment documentation to determine which VCL file or configuration object is loaded. Managed environments often generate VCL from a template rather than reading an arbitrary file on disk.
  3. Add the pass logic. Put the WordPress URL checks in vcl_recv. Preserve existing host rules, method handling, authorization checks, and the built-in cookie behavior. If the active configuration already defines vcl_recv, merge the condition into that subroutine rather than creating a conflicting second definition.
  4. Validate the configuration. Run the syntax check or validation action provided by your Varnish deployment. A syntax error can prevent a reload or leave the previous configuration active, depending on the host.
  5. Reload through the documented process. The exact command, service name, permissions, and configuration path vary by platform. Use the host’s supported reload procedure instead of assuming that a local service restart controls the production cache.
  6. Account for CDN precedence. If a CDN or edge cache sits in front of Varnish, configure equivalent bypass behavior there. Also ensure that the CDN does not cache administration, login, preview, or authenticated responses independently of the origin’s VCL.
  7. Test before declaring success. Check anonymous public content, login, administration, preview, authenticated front-end pages, logout, and a second user account. Confirm both the response behavior and the cache status reported by your platform.

Validation checklist

Anonymous public page

Open a normal public page in a private browser session or without authentication. It should remain eligible for the site’s ordinary caching policy. A bypass rule for administration must not accidentally match every URL or attach a pass decision to all visitors.

Login endpoint

Request wp-login.php while logged out. It should reach the backend through the pass path rather than being served as a shared cached object. Submit the form and confirm that the session cookie is set and retained by the browser.

Administration interface

After signing in, open /wp-admin/ and several dashboard screens. Verify that the page shows the current account, menus, notices, and capabilities. A successful page load alone is not enough if a cached fragment still displays another user’s state.

Preview URLs

Use WordPress’s preview action and inspect the resulting URL. Requests containing preview=true should pass even when the path is a normal-looking post or page URL.

Authenticated front end

Visit a public-facing page while logged in. Check the admin bar, account controls, personalized widgets, and any membership or editorial controls. The request should not receive a shared anonymous object. If the page is personalized by a cookie, Varnish’s default cookie rule should send it through pass.

Logout and account separation

Log out, revisit the same URLs, and then sign in with a second account. Confirm that the first account’s admin bar, dashboard fragment, notices, or private response is not visible to the second account or to an anonymous browser.

Headers and logs

Use the response headers and Varnish logs supplied by your host to distinguish a backend pass, a cache hit, a miss, and a hit-for-pass object. Header names and logging commands differ by platform, so interpret them with the host’s documentation. The key question is whether the request reached the origin without being served from a shared object.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Troubleshooting a request that still appears cached

The request is served by a CDN first

If the origin Varnish logs show no request, the edge layer may have answered it. Add equivalent exclusions for login, administration, previews, and authenticated traffic at the CDN, then purge any previously stored objects according to that provider’s process.

The edited VCL is not active

Check the running configuration identifier or deployment status in the hosting control plane. A correctly written rule has no effect if the host loaded another VCL file, generated a newer version, or rejected the reload and retained the prior configuration.

The regular expression does not match

Inspect the exact request URL, including the path and query string. Confirm whether the request uses /wp-admin, /wp-admin/, wp-login.php, a renamed login path, or a preview query. Test the expression against the actual URL rather than a remembered version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cookies were removed before Varnish saw them

A proxy, CDN, security rule, or custom VCL can strip the Cookie header. In that case, Varnish cannot apply its generic cookie pass rule. Trace the request at each layer and restore the header or add a narrowly scoped URL rule for the affected endpoint.

A personalized response is still stored

Look for custom backend logic that removes or rewrites Set-Cookie, marks a response as publicly cacheable, or varies content without an appropriate cache policy. Built-in Varnish behavior protects responses carrying Set-Cookie; custom response manipulation can defeat that safeguard and must be reviewed.

Everything is bypassed

An over-broad cookie condition, such as passing every request that carries any analytics or preference cookie, can sharply reduce cacheability. Keep the generic safety rule, but narrow additional conditions to authenticated state that is proven to personalize the response. Measure the effect with your own cache logs rather than relying on a generic performance percentage.

Security and performance trade-offs

Passing authenticated traffic is primarily a confidentiality and correctness decision. It prevents shared-cache reuse where the response can depend on the user, session, capability, preview state, or account. The cost is that those requests require a backend fetch instead of benefiting from a shared object.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

URL-only exclusions usually preserve more cacheability for anonymous traffic because they affect only known paths. Their weakness is coverage: an authenticated front-end route that is not listed can be missed if cookies are stripped or if another layer changes the request. Cookie-based exclusions offer broader protection for logged-in pages, but every cookie match should be tested so that harmless cookies do not turn the entire public site into pass traffic.

There is no universal cache-hit percentage for this configuration. The result depends on WordPress plugins, response headers, traffic mix, CDN behavior, and the number of authenticated visitors. Establish a baseline in your own logs, deploy the rule, and compare anonymous cacheability and backend request volume after validation.

Safe operating principles

  • Keep administration, login, and preview requests out of a shared cache.
  • Retain Varnish’s default pass behavior for Cookie and Authorization headers unless you have a documented, tested exception.
  • Do not treat pipe as a synonym for pass.
  • Apply exclusions at every caching layer that can answer the request.
  • Never assume a successful status code proves that the response was private; inspect cache status and account-specific content.
  • After changes, test logout and at least two user identities as well as an anonymous browser.
  • Document the active VCL location and reload method so a later deployment does not silently remove the rule.
