You can buy Zcash (ZEC) through an exchange that serves your location, then keep it there or withdraw it to a wallet you control. If you want shielded transactions, check that both the exchange and receiving wallet support withdrawals and addresses of the type you intend to use; trading ZEC does not automatically mean an exchange supports shielded withdrawals. Back up your wallet’s recovery information before transferring a meaningful amount.
How to buy ZEC safely
- Find an exchange available where you live. The official Zcash ecosystem directory lists Gemini, Kraken, and Coinbase among exchanges, but a listing does not mean a service is available in every country or offers identical features everywhere.
- Compare the details that affect your use. Check payment methods, fees, identity requirements, custody terms, and whether the exchange can withdraw ZEC to a shielded address. Zcash’s exchange guidance recommends choosing an exchange that supports shielded withdrawals, but does not establish current fees or one best provider for everyone.
- Choose and set up a wallet. Use the project’s official distribution channel, confirm it supports the ZEC address type you need, and create a secure recovery backup before transferring funds. Do not share recovery secrets.
- Verify the withdrawal destination. Confirm the address type and shielded-withdrawal support in both the exchange and wallet. Do not assume that ZEC trading support includes shielded withdrawals, and do not guess the address format.
- Consider a small test withdrawal. Once it arrives and you have confirmed the process, move any larger amount you intend to hold. This is a practical precaution, not an amount prescribed by Zcash’s cited guidance.
What shielded and transparent transactions reveal
Zcash supports both shielded and transparent transactions. With transparent activity, transaction information is publicly visible. Shielded transactions use cryptographic proofs and encrypted transaction data to protect specified details. The Zcash usage guide recommends a shielded-by-default wallet or exchange for people seeking confidentiality for transactions and financial history.

The issuer’s SEC-filed description of Zcash explains that shielded transactions use zero-knowledge proofs, including zk-SNARKs, to establish transaction properties without revealing protected data. This describes protocol features; it is not a promise that every part of your activity is anonymous.

A shielded withdrawal does not hide the exchange purchase
An exchange purchase may be associated with account records or identity checks. Withdrawing ZEC to a shielded address does not make that earlier exchange activity anonymous. Privacy also depends on the services, devices, network access, backups, and behavior involved in the transaction.

Choosing a ZEC wallet
Zcash’s wallet guide covers hardware, mobile, and desktop wallets and presents a mobile wallet such as Zodl as an easy starting point for many users. Compare wallets by supported ZEC address types, whether shielded use is the default, recovery options, and device compatibility—not just by convenience.
Mobile and software wallets
Zodl, formerly Zashi, describes itself as self-custodial and privacy by default. Its site also lists built-in swaps, CrossPay, Flexa support, and integration with Keystone hardware wallets. Availability and features can vary; check the current wallet documentation for the functions you need.

Hardware wallets
A hardware wallet may suit someone who wants a physical device as part of their storage setup. Keystone appears in the Zcash ecosystem directory, and Zodl lists Keystone integration. Those facts do not establish compatibility for every Keystone model, firmware version, wallet app, address pool, or shielded operation. Verify those specifics before buying a device or sending ZEC.

Protect your wallet and recovery information
- Keep recovery material secure. A wallet’s private keys authorize transfers. The SEC filing warns that losing a private key without a backup can mean permanently losing access to the ZEC associated with it. Store recovery information somewhere protected from theft, damage, and unauthorized access; never share it with someone claiming to provide support.
- Use authentic software and devices. Download wallet software from the project’s official links, and confirm a device’s model and firmware support before relying on it for ZEC.
- Apply security guidance to the right software. The zcashd documentation describes limitations involving wallet encryption and side-channel attacks for that implementation and recommends full-disk or home-directory encryption for wallet data at rest. These implementation-specific warnings should not be generalized to every current ZEC wallet.
What to compare before choosing
| Choice | What to check |
|---|---|
| Exchange | Availability in your country, purchase methods, current fees, custody terms, identity requirements, and shielded-withdrawal support. Check the provider’s current documentation; Zcash’s exchange guidance does not establish a universal provider or current fee schedule. |
| Wallet | Self-custody, supported ZEC address types, shielded-by-default behavior, recovery process, and whether its features fit your privacy needs. |
| Software or hardware | Software wallets can offer convenient day-to-day access; hardware devices add a physical component, but compatibility with the ZEC features you need must be checked for the specific model and setup. |
Exchange availability, withdrawal options, wallet features, and hardware compatibility can change. Verify current support with the exchange and wallet providers before making a purchase or transfer.
