Buy XRP through a service available in your jurisdiction, then decide whether to leave it with that provider or withdraw it to a self-custody wallet. In self-custody, you control the keys that authorize transactions—and are responsible for protecting the recovery information. Before moving a large amount, verify the receiving address and destination instructions, check the current XRP Ledger account reserve, and consider a small test transfer.
Choose where to buy XRP
You can buy XRP through a cryptocurrency exchange or an available third-party fiat onramp. Providers, payment methods, fees, and legal availability vary by country and may change. Compare the terms that apply where you live, including purchase and withdrawal fees, security controls, whether XRP withdrawals are supported, and the network used for withdrawal.

Ledger describes buying XRP through third-party providers integrated into its app, with the purchased XRP sent to an address generated by a Ledger device. The provider handles the purchase, and availability depends on location; this is a vendor-described option, not a universal route or endorsement. See Ledger’s XRP purchase information.

A wallet does not hold XRP as a file. XRP balances and transactions are recorded on the XRP Ledger; a wallet manages the credentials used to authorize transactions. XRPL documentation warns that anyone who knows an account’s seed or private key can create signatures to authorize transactions. XRPL documentation on cryptographic keys

| Option | Who controls the keys | Convenience and trade-offs | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Custodial exchange account | The platform holds the keys and manages the account. | Buying and trading can be convenient, but you rely on the platform for access and withdrawals. | Local availability, fees, security controls, XRP withdrawal support, and deposit or withdrawal instructions. Current terms vary by provider. |
| Software wallet | You control the keys, which are stored digitally on a device. | Often easier to access and feature-rich, but the keys are exposed to risks affecting that device. | Wallet reputation, XRP support, device security, and how backup and restoration work. |
| Hardware wallet | You control the keys held on a physical device that can be disconnected from internet-connected devices. | Can reduce some online exposure, but requires the device to authorize transactions. It cannot protect a recovery phrase that is disclosed or lost. | XRP support, transaction review on the device, recovery procedure, connection method, and a trusted purchase channel. |
Self-custody trades reliance on a platform for responsibility for your own access, recovery, and approvals. A hardware wallet changes the risk profile; it does not make funds completely safe or prevent a wrong-address transfer, a malicious approval, or loss of the recovery backup.
Set up an XRP-compatible self-custody wallet
- Choose a compatible wallet. Confirm that it supports XRP and the functions you need. If you choose a hardware wallet, obtain it through a channel you trust and follow the manufacturer’s official setup process. Ledger’s product information, for example, lists XRP support for the Ledger Nano X; that is a product example, not an independent comparison or recommendation.
- Initialize it yourself. Create a new wallet through its official setup flow. Ledger advises against using a preconfigured device. Do not accept recovery words supplied by another person or included as an already-created wallet backup.
- Make a private recovery backup. Write down the recovery information as the wallet instructs and keep it physically secure and private. Never share, photograph, or type a recovery phrase, seed, or private key into a website, phone, or computer. Anyone who gets the secret may be able to control the funds. See Ledger’s recovery-phrase security guidance.
- Generate an XRP receiving address. If you use a hardware wallet, verify the address on the device’s own display before copying or sharing it. Do not rely only on an address shown by connected software.
Withdraw XRP carefully
- Check the withdrawal network. When withdrawing from an exchange or other service, select the XRP Ledger and follow the service’s current instructions. Do not assume that similarly named networks are interchangeable.
- Check whether a destination tag is required. A centralized platform may require a destination tag or memo to credit a deposit to your account. Follow the receiving platform’s instructions for that specific deposit; there is no single tag rule that applies to every address or service.
- Send a small test first when practical. A modest test transfer can help catch an address, network, or setup mistake before you move a larger amount. Wait until the receiving wallet or service shows the test as credited before proceeding.
- Review and approve on the device. Check the destination, amount, and other transaction details on your hardware wallet before authorizing. Ledger’s setup and transfer guidance also recommends checking the address on the device and using a small test transaction with compatible third-party software: Ledger security guidance.
Account reserve: check the current requirement
XRPL documentation accessed in 2026 states that a newly funded self-custody account requires a 1 XRP reserve, which is locked up indefinitely rather than available to spend. Protocol parameters can change, so check the current XRPL reserve documentation before funding a new account. Do not assume the documented figure will remain current.

What happens if a transfer goes wrong?
Once an XRP Ledger transaction has applied, a privileged administrator cannot undo or reverse it. XRPL documentation says digital signatures authorize transactions and there is no privileged administrator who can reverse an applied transaction. That makes careful address checks and recovery-phrase protection essential: an address mistake or compromised key can result in funds that cannot be recovered.
