To buy a tokenized fund, choose a specific offering and confirm its current prospectus allows your investor type and jurisdiction. Then complete the fund’s required identity checks, use its approved account channel and wallet or blockchain, meet the applicable minimum, and follow its subscription and redemption rules. A token visible on a public blockchain is not proof that you can invest in it—or sell it whenever you want.
What buying a tokenized fund actually involves
A tokenized fund represents fund shares as digital tokens on a blockchain. Tokenization can change how ownership is recorded or how shares are transferred; it does not, by itself, remove the fund’s account-opening checks, transfer agent, prospectus, dealing schedule, or redemption terms.

For example, Franklin Templeton says one share of its Franklin OnChain U.S. Government Money Fund (FOBXX) is represented by one BENJI token, while the transfer agent maintains the official ownership record through the Benji platform. BlackRock’s explanation likewise describes tokenized money market fund shares as digital representations while the underlying portfolio, net asset value process, and governance remain in place: BlackRock’s tokenization and money market funds explainer.

A token transfer is not the same as a cash redemption
BlackRock describes subscriptions through traditional dealing channels and fund cutoffs, followed by delivery of tokens to the investor’s wallet after settlement. It also describes transfers between allow-listed investors as possible at any time, while redemptions remain subject to fund cutoffs. Franklin’s prospectus says peer-to-peer transfers do not create a public trading market and that fund shares are not listed on a national securities exchange or alternative trading system. In practice, transferability does not guarantee a buyer, instant liquidity, or 24/7 cash redemption.

Check eligibility before opening an account
Use the specific fund’s current prospectus and account guidance; eligibility cannot be inferred from a token ticker, a wallet, or the blockchain on which a contract appears. Work through these checks before sending money or connecting a wallet:
- Investor category: Confirm whether the fund accepts individual investors, institutions, accredited investors, qualified purchasers, or another specified category. The offering documents control.
- Residence and jurisdiction: Check whether the fund is registered or offered where you live. Do not substitute citizenship or access to a website for the fund’s actual residence and account rules.
- Identity and compliance: Find out what identity, tax, source-of-funds, sanctions, or anti-money-laundering information is required. Account approval may be necessary before investing.
- Account channel: Identify whether the fund requires its own app, an institutional portal, a transfer agent, a broker, or another approved intermediary.
- Wallet and network: Verify the supported blockchain, wallet requirements, and whether wallets or investors must be approved or allow-listed. A compatible wallet does not automatically qualify its owner.
- Minimums and charges: Check initial and subsequent investment minimums, fund expenses, account or intermediary charges, and transaction or network fees. A minimum on one network may not apply on another.
- Dealing and exits: Read subscription cutoffs, settlement timing, transfer restrictions, redemption procedures, and the time it takes to receive cash.
- Risks and tax: Review the fund objective, principal risks, fees, and tax disclosures in the current prospectus. Tax treatment depends on the fund and the investor’s circumstances.
Franklin FOBXX/BENJI: a concrete application example
Franklin Templeton’s August 1, 2026 prospectus and 2026 summary prospectus describe one specific route; these rules are not a template for every tokenized fund. The prospectus says FOBXX is intended for U.S. residents and, with very limited exceptions, is not registered or offered for sale in other jurisdictions. It describes direct access for individual and institutional investors through different channels. Your residence and circumstances, along with the fund’s current account rules, determine whether you qualify.

Application and onboarding
The summary prospectus directs individual investors to download the Benji by Franklin Templeton mobile app. Institutions can use Franklin’s institutional web portal. The fund collects information for its AML/KYC policies as part of opening an account. The prospectus says purchases and redemptions can be initiated through the relevant app or portal but are processed only during normal business hours on business days.
Minimums depend on the network
The 2026 summary prospectus gives a $20 initial purchase minimum for most accounts, with higher minimums possible; it states that subsequent purchases have no minimum. The August 1, 2026 prospectus also lists network-specific initial minimums:

Franklin says network eligibility depends on the particular blockchain and that minimums may be waived or changed without prior notice as transaction costs fluctuate. These are published terms, not a guarantee of the live amount: confirm the currently supported network and threshold with Franklin before funding an account.
Fees, transfers, and fund risks
Franklin’s prospectus says direct investor-managed wallet transactions interacting with smart contracts may make the investor responsible for the network’s native token or gas fee. Its summary prospectus separately describes circumstances in which public-chain fees are borne by the investment manager or affiliates. The arrangement depends on the network and transaction, so check the terms for your account rather than assuming every investor pays—or never pays—gas.

The fund is not a bank deposit, and tokenization does not guarantee a stable value, preserved capital, or redemption on demand. Franklin’s prospectus warns that investors can lose money and that the SEC has not approved or disapproved the securities. Read the fund’s current disclosure for its specific investment, liquidity, credit, interest-rate, technology, custody, transfer, and operational risks. Franklin’s summary prospectus also says distributions are generally taxable as ordinary income and that the fund is not anticipated to be available to tax-deferred investors; those statements apply to FOBXX and should not be generalized to other funds.

How to evaluate another tokenized fund
Compare funds on their actual terms, not on whether a token can be seen or moved on-chain. Check the underlying assets and fund structure, investor class and geography, minimums and supported networks, onboarding and wallet rules, dealing and redemption times, transfer restrictions and secondary-market availability, expenses and network fees, and tax treatment.

BlackRock BUIDL requires direct document checks
The SEC filing index identifies BlackRock USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund Ltd. and lists a Section 3(c)(7) classification. That index alone does not establish the fund’s current investor qualifications, minimum investment, geographic availability, or application steps. Do not rely on an unverified threshold or eligibility claim; obtain the current offering documents and account instructions from BlackRock or Securitize before deciding whether you can apply.
