Games Like NYT Connections: Sports Edition for Daily Sports Trivia

If you want a daily sports puzzle built around hidden word connections, start with NYT Connections: Sports Edition: it is free to play and follows the same rules as the original Connections. If replaying old puzzles matters more, the independent site ConnectionsSports.com says it offers a free archive, along with hints and custom puzzles. The key difference is that NYT says its Sports Edition has no archive.

What makes a sports Connections-style game?

In Connections, players sort 16 words into four groups of four based on a shared link. The challenge is spotting the intended connection among plausible alternatives. The New York Times describes Sports Edition as the sports version of Connections, brought to solvers by The Athletic, and says the same rules apply to both versions. NYT’s Connections help page explains where to play and how the daily puzzle works.

For a close match, compare more than the sports theme: look at whether the puzzle is daily or replayable, how mistakes are handled, whether hints are available, and whether a subscription is needed.

NYT Connections: Sports Edition: the official daily option

The official Sports Edition is available through NYT Games web pages, The Athletic’s website and app, and the NYT News app. NYT lists it among its free daily puzzles, so a Games subscription is not required just to play the daily puzzle. A subscription covers the broader Games catalog and archive offerings; check NYT’s current Games subscription details for up-to-date terms rather than relying on an old price.

What to expect

  • Daily play: Connections’ daily puzzle releases at midnight in the player’s timezone.
  • Access: NYT says Connections is free to play without registration or sign-in. Signing in lets progress carry across devices.
  • Sports focus: The Sports Edition applies Connections’ group-finding format to sports-related material.
  • No Sports Edition archive: NYT’s Help Center says the Sports Edition does not have an archive, so you cannot use it to replay its past daily puzzles.

Those access and availability details are described in the NYT Help Center. If your priority is a daily challenge with the official NYT and The Athletic connection, this is the direct fit; if you want old puzzles on demand, consider the third-party option below.

ConnectionsSports.com: a third-party alternative with replay

ConnectionsSports.com is an independent site, not an NYT or The Athletic product. It describes its game as a daily puzzle in which players sort 16 sports-related words into four groups of four, with four mistakes allowed. The site also describes difficulty bands, hints, a leaderboard, and custom puzzles.

Its archive page says past puzzles can be replayed without charge. That makes it a useful alternative if you have finished the daily puzzle or want to practice at another time. Feature descriptions here are the site’s own claims, not an independent audit. Its pages also show different archive counts, so the size of the archive should not be treated as a fixed figure.

Why the categories can feel unpredictable

Connections editor Wyna Liu described her board-building process in an interview as involving “a lot of free association, a lot of Google.” She also described using a notebook and Google Sheets, then iterating on and combining possible categories. That helps explain why a board may contain several tempting links: the task is not merely to find any sensible group, but to identify the four groupings the puzzle setter built.
