Buy from an official retailer or a marketplace with a clear dispute process, check the seller and listing before paying, and keep the transaction on-platform. For individual cards, inspect the listing and seller carefully; for sealed packs, compare the packaging with Pokémon’s official product images and be wary of dramatic discounts. No channel makes every listing safe, so assess the specific seller, product and return route.
Choose the product and buying channel
Start by deciding whether you want a single card or sealed product. The risks differ: a single card can be judged from its listing and, once received, examined; counterfeit booster packs can be difficult to distinguish from genuine ones.

Pokémon Center Support identifies Pokémon Center, its automated retail vending machines and limited-time deals with major retailers such as Target and GameStop as official sales channels. Pokémon TCG cards are an exception to restrictions on smaller-retailer merchandise because they are distributed through existing mass-market retail partnerships. This is channel guidance, not a guarantee that an individual third-party marketplace listing is genuine. Check who is actually selling and fulfilling the order.

Pokémon warns that fake booster packs can be very difficult to discern and says a pack priced dramatically below suggested retail price is a warning sign. Treat a low price as a reason to investigate, not proof by itself. Pokémon’s counterfeit-card guidance explains these checks.

For individual cards
Look for a seller with a track record and read the exact condition description, shipping terms, photos and stated return or dispute process. If the marketplace publishes a specific process for not-as-described or suspected counterfeit cards, read it before you buy. For example, TCGplayer’s Safeguard policy describes coverage for eligible orders from both Direct and marketplace sellers. That is evidence of TCGplayer’s own process, not a comparison proving that other marketplaces offer less protection.
Check the listing and seller before paying
- Seller and fulfillment: Identify who is selling the item and who ships it. A familiar marketplace name does not, on its own, verify an independent seller or listing.
- Description and photos: Check the product, set and condition details against the photos. For sealed goods, compare package text and artwork with official product images. TCGplayer’s surfaced guidance also flags spelling or grammar errors, mismatched set references and anime images as warning signs; these are clues, not a complete authentication test.
- Price: Compare the total price, including shipping, with a plausible retail reference. A dramatically underpriced pack deserves particular caution under Pokémon’s guidance.
- Returns and disputes: Find the platform’s current route for missing, damaged, not-as-described or counterfeit items. Confirm who to contact and any deadline before completing checkout.
- Payment and communication: Prefer a payment method with a documented dispute process, and do not move payment or the transaction conversation off-platform if doing so would remove marketplace protections. ScamShield Singapore advises secure payment options and warns against advance payments and direct bank transfers in the pre-order scams it describes.
The ScamShield evidence is specific to Singapore: its January 2, 2026 bulletin reported at least S$958,000 lost since October 2025 to e-commerce scams involving Pokémon card sales. That figure is not a global estimate of scam losses or counterfeit-card prevalence. Read the ScamShield bulletin.

Check a card or sealed product when it arrives
Individual cards
Pokémon says counterfeit cards are often see-through when held up to a bright light. This can help identify a suspect card, but it is only a clue—not a definitive authentication method. If a card seems fake, Pokémon recommends asking a shop specializing in trading cards to evaluate it. Consult Pokémon Support’s guidance rather than relying on one visual test alone.
Sealed products
Compare the packaging, text and artwork with official product references. Pokémon cautions that counterfeit booster packs can be hard to distinguish, so a convincing-looking wrapper is not conclusive proof of authenticity. A strikingly low price is a reason for extra scrutiny, not a substitute for checking the seller and your available dispute options.

What to do if an order is missing or not as described
- Save your records. Keep the listing, order number, payment record, seller messages and delivery information. Photograph the item and packaging you received.
- Contact the seller through the marketplace order page. Explain the issue promptly and use the platform’s official support route if it is not resolved.
- Follow the platform’s process and deadline. TCGplayer’s published policy says eligible missing and not-as-described claims should be raised within 30 calendar days after the estimated delivery date, and recommends contacting support within 48 hours of identifying an issue. These are TCGplayer-specific terms and may change; check the current policy before relying on them.
- Use the counterfeit process for a suspected fake. TCGplayer says buyers must submit the card for review through its counterfeit claim process, and that confirmed counterfeit cards receive a full refund.
- Do not send extra money outside the original transaction. TCGplayer says sellers may not request additional payment after a completed transaction because a market price changed. Keep any resolution within the platform’s documented process.
For more detail, see TCGplayer’s current Safeguard policy. Deadlines and remedies differ by platform, so consult the applicable policy as soon as a problem appears.
