Start with the event organizer, publisher, or licensed vendor’s page for the exact item: that is where you can confirm the edition, official sales route, queue or preorder rules, and any post-event offer. If it is sold out, treat a resale listing as unverified until you have checked the actual item, seller, full terms, and payment protections. Rules vary by event and vendor; badge restrictions are not a universal ban on reselling merchandise.
Check official sales channels before looking at resale
Search the specific convention’s official merchandise page, then check the publisher or vendor page for the item. Look for the exact product name or edition, sales location, preorder deadline, pickup instructions, queue requirements, and whether inventory is limited. A generic “Comic-Con exclusive” label does not establish that a listing is official or that an item is available.

For New York Comic Con 2026, the official merchandise page lists goods including apparel, lanyards, stickers, pins, plushes, and bags. It identifies official merchandise booth #4505. It also directs customers to booth #4600 to pick up merchandise preordered but not shipped before the show, or ordered through the mobile app. The page was current when accessed on October 7, 2026; check it again for changes.

Understand what “limited” means for access
Preorder, pickup, queue, and walk-up inventory rules belong to the particular event, vendor, and item. They are not interchangeable. A queue may govern access to a sales activity without guaranteeing that a particular product will remain in stock.
For San Diego Comic-Con 2026, TAMASHII NATIONS’ event page says preorder pickup was the only guaranteed way to secure its event exclusives during the convention. Walk-up purchases were available while supplies lasted, with quantities that could vary by day and access not guaranteed. The vendor also announced a limited post-event offer through TAMASHII NATIONS ONLINE SHOP and TAMASHII NATIONS STORE NEW YORK. This is a vendor-specific example, not evidence that other booths or items will be restocked after an event.

Before travel or joining a queue, confirm the latest event page and vendor instructions for the item you want. If an official preorder has closed, look for a clearly announced pickup or post-event route before assuming resale is your only option.
Compare the buying routes before paying

Use this checklist to evaluate a resale listing
- Match the exact edition. Compare the item name, edition or cover, stated quantity, condition, and included components with the organizer’s or vendor’s listing. For convention-exclusive comic books, make sure the edition and cover are the ones you want rather than relying on a broad “exclusive” description.
- Ask for photos of the actual item. Stock images do not establish that a seller has the item or show its condition. Request clear, current photos of relevant packaging, edition marks, and any flaws. Photos can support your assessment, but they do not guarantee authenticity.
- Check the seller beyond the star rating. Read recent feedback and comments, and search the seller or site name alongside terms such as “complaint” or “scam.” Be cautious if a seller has little history, inconsistent details, or avoids reasonable questions.
- Calculate the full price and read the terms. Include shipping, taxes, marketplace fees, delivery estimates, return eligibility, and who pays return shipping. Ask questions in writing and save the replies. A very low price for branded merchandise is a warning sign, not proof on its own that a listing is fraudulent.
- Keep the transaction on the marketplace. An off-platform payment or conversation can remove marketplace protections. Prefer a credit card or another secure method only after checking that its buyer protection applies to this seller and item. Do not send gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or other hard-to-reverse payments when a seller insists on them.
- Save records and know the deadlines. Keep the listing, photos, seller messages, payment confirmation, delivery promise, and receipts. Check the marketplace’s deadlines for claims and returns. If something goes wrong, contact the seller and platform promptly; where appropriate, ask your card issuer about disputing the charge.
- Treat site security and seller disclosures as limited checks. HTTPS encrypts a connection; it does not prove that a site or seller is legitimate. Marketplace disclosures required under the INFORM Consumers Act apply to many high-volume third-party sellers of new or unused consumer products, not every seller, and are not an authenticity certificate. The FTC says marketplaces must also provide a channel to report suspicious activity.
The Federal Trade Commission’s online shopping guidance recommends checking seller information, looking for complaints, reviewing shipping and return terms, and keeping transaction records. Its 2023 alert reported that online shopping scams were the second-most reported type of scam to the FTC in 2022. That is an agency-wide, dated statistic, not a measure of risk for convention merchandise buyers.

Keep badge rules separate from merchandise rules
San Diego Comic-Con’s Convention Policies state: “Retail sales are strictly limited to the exhibitors in the Comic-Con Exhibit Hall.” That is a venue retail policy. The convention’s terms and conditions separately prohibit selling, trading, transferring, or sharing a Comic-Con badge, purchase code, or complimentary pass. Those credential restrictions should not be treated as a blanket prohibition on secondary-market merchandise. Check the relevant event and seller rules for the item you are buying.
