Before buying an AI account from a reseller, verify with the provider that the seller and the exact access method are authorized. Then confirm who controls the account, whether the subscription can be transferred, what you will pay and how you can cancel, and who may see your data. A screenshot or seller’s guarantee is not proof of authorization. The lower-risk option is usually to register and pay for an account directly through the provider’s official site or app.
Start by checking whether the reseller is authorized
Ask the AI provider through its official support channel whether the named seller may sell the specific plan or access method being offered. Get the answer in writing if possible. Find the support page and terms yourself rather than relying only on links supplied by the seller.

Keep copies of the listing, seller identity, receipt, promised plan and limits, and written refund terms. A verbal assurance, screenshot, or guarantee from the seller does not change the provider’s rules. If the provider cannot confirm that the offer is permitted, do not pay on the assumption that it is.

For ChatGPT and other OpenAI services for individuals, the OpenAI Terms of Use, effective January 1, 2026, prohibit sharing account credentials or making an account available to another person, and prohibit modifying, copying, leasing, selling, or distributing the services. OpenAI says users are responsible for activity under their accounts and may suspend or terminate access for specified violations or risks. Check the current terms for the exact provider, plan, and region before buying.

Find out who owns and controls the account
Determine whose email address, recovery phone or email, payment method, and credentials control the account. If the seller remains the account owner or administrator, they may be able to change access or recover the account. You may have no independent way to prove or retain control if a dispute arises.
- Is the account registered to your email address, and can you change its recovery details yourself?
- Will you receive individual credentials, or are multiple buyers using one login?
- Does the seller retain access, administrator privileges, or control of billing and recovery?
- Is the seller asking for your existing password, one-time codes, or recovery codes? Do not provide them.
For ChatGPT, OpenAI says an account is intended for the individual who created it and advises anyone else who needs the service to sign up for their own account. Its account-sharing guidance warns that shared credentials can expose personal data and payment information, and recommends a strong, unique password and two-factor authentication after suspected unauthorized access.

Verify that the subscription can be transferred
Do not assume that a seller can hand over a subscription simply by giving you login details. Ask the provider whether it supports transferring the exact plan to an account you control, and follow the provider’s official process. Account access and subscription ownership are not necessarily the same thing.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT subscription transfer guidance says a subscription cannot be transferred to a new account. It directs a user who wants to use a subscription on another account to cancel the active subscription on the current account first. This guidance should not be read as a rule for every provider or every organizational migration; check the process for the specific plan.

Calculate the full cost and identify who handles cancellation
Before paying, get the total price and these details in writing:
- Whether the charge is one-time or recurring, the billing interval, and the renewal date.
- Whether payment goes to the provider or the reseller, and who can stop recurring charges.
- How to cancel, when cancellation takes effect, and whether access continues through a paid period.
- What refund conditions apply, including what happens if access stops working or the provider rejects the arrangement.
For OpenAI consumer subscriptions, the current Terms of Use say paid subscriptions renew on the agreed schedule until canceled and payments are generally non-refundable except where required by law. They also preserve mandatory local cancellation rights. This does not guarantee a refund from a reseller: review the live terms, the seller’s written conditions, and consumer protections that apply where you live.

Consider who can see your prompts and account data
Read the provider’s current privacy policy and service terms to understand how account data and prompts are handled. If someone else owns or administers the account, do not assume your conversations or other account information are private from them. Avoid putting sensitive personal, work, financial, or confidential information into an account whose owner or administrator is someone else.

In February 2024, the FTC staff commented that quietly making retroactive changes to data practices—such as newly sharing consumer data or using it for AI training, with notice only through a surreptitious retroactive policy change—could be unfair or deceptive. That commentary is not a finding that every policy update is unlawful. It is a reason to read the current policy and consider what an account owner or administrator may be able to access.

Check the seller, remedy, and any bundled claims
Assess more than price. Compare provider authorization, account ownership and administrator control, individual versus shared credentials, transfer support, total cost and renewal, cancellation and refund responsibility, privacy, recovery and support, and whether the seller’s identity and reputation can be independently verified.
If the offer bundles coaching, business setup, or claims about potential earnings, the FTC’s consumer checklist for business or coaching opportunities may help you scrutinize the seller, references, lawsuits, cancellation and refund terms, and earnings claims. That guidance is specific to those kinds of offers; it does not mean every AI account sale is covered by the FTC Business Opportunity Rule. Contradictions between seller statements and required disclosures are a reason to walk away.
If you already shared credentials or paid
- Change the exposed password to a strong, unique one and turn on two-factor authentication, if available. OpenAI’s account-sharing guidance recommends both after suspected unauthorized access.
- Contact the provider through a known, official support channel if you need technical help or believe someone else can access the account.
- If you gave the seller payment details, review the relevant account for unauthorized charges and contact your bank or card issuer using a known official channel.
- Keep the listing, messages, payment receipt, and refund terms in case you need to explain the transaction to the provider, seller, or payment company.
The FTC’s guidance on what to do if you were scammed also recommends changing passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and contacting a known, trusted company for technical help. These steps can reduce risk, but they do not guarantee account recovery or a refund.

Use a strong, unique password and enable the provider’s supported two-factor authentication. A FIDO2 security key may be an additional option if the provider supports it; verify compatibility before buying one. A security key helps protect sign-in, but it does not make an unauthorized resale or shared account legitimate.
