You can buy SOL through a cryptocurrency exchange or a purchase service built into a wallet, then either leave it in the exchange account or withdraw it to a self-custody wallet. The key choice is who controls the signing keys: exchanges manage them for you, while self-custody makes you responsible for your recovery phrase and transactions. Before sending SOL, confirm the destination is a wallet address that supports native SOL and select the matching network.
Choose how to buy SOL
Common purchase routes are a centralized exchange and an on-ramp integrated into a software wallet or a hardware-wallet companion app. An integrated purchase may send SOL directly to your wallet, but providers, payment methods, identity checks, fees, and availability vary by service and jurisdiction. A provider’s description applies to that provider, not to every wallet or purchase.

- Total cost: Check the purchase amount, payment charge, spread, and any network or withdrawal charge shown before confirming.
- Availability and verification: Confirm that the service operates in your jurisdiction and what identity checks it requires.
- Withdrawal support: Check whether you can withdraw SOL to your chosen wallet, which network the service supports, and any limits or rules.
- Recovery: Understand the exchange’s account-recovery process or, for self-custody, your responsibility for protecting the recovery phrase.
Decide where to keep your SOL
| Option | Who controls the keys? | Access and recovery | Main responsibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exchange account | The exchange controls the signing keys. | The platform handles account access and its recovery process. | Protect your account credentials and understand the provider’s policies. |
| Self-custody software wallet | You control the keys. | You use the wallet and its recovery phrase to restore access. | Keep the phrase private and backed up securely; review each transaction. |
| Self-custody hardware wallet | You control the keys; the device can keep signing keys offline. | Recovery still depends on your backup phrase and compatible wallet software. | Set up the device securely, confirm compatibility, protect the backup, and review what you sign. |
An exchange can be more convenient if you prefer platform-managed access; self-custody gives you direct key control but makes you responsible for recovery. A software wallet can suit frequent transactions. A hardware wallet is an optional physical product for people who prioritize keeping signing keys offline. It does not make an unsafe transaction safe or replace recovery-phrase protection. Solana does not endorse one official wallet, so check the wallet provider’s current documentation for support.

Solana’s Verify Address documentation says, “Sending funds to the wrong address can result in permanent loss.” Its Production Readiness guidance covers key-management considerations. Hardware-wallet compatibility is product- and software-specific: check the current support information for the exact device and wallet app. Ledger, for example, documents SOL support and third-party wallet compatibility on its Solana wallet page and supported-assets page; this is not a guarantee that every Ledger model or app combination supports every feature.
Protect a self-custody recovery phrase
A recovery phrase is a critical backup credential, not a password to give to customer support. If someone else gets it, they may be able to control the wallet. Store it privately and offline. Do not photograph it, put it in an unsecured cloud document, send it to support, or enter it on a site reached through an unsolicited message. Wallet-provider guidance notes that a provider may not be able to restore a lost phrase.

- Get the receiving address. Open your wallet and select its receive option for SOL. Copy the address from the wallet rather than relying on an old message or an address from another asset.
- Start a withdrawal. In the exchange, choose SOL as the asset and enter the wallet’s receiving address.
- Match the network. Select the network supported by the destination address. Coinbase’s withdrawal guidance warns that an unsupported or incorrect network can lead to permanent loss and directs users to choose the network associated with the destination address.
- Check the details on the confirmation screen. Compare the beginning and end of the full address with the wallet’s address, then review the asset, network, amount, and fees. Do not confirm if any detail is unexpected.
- Consider a test transfer for a new address. Sending a small amount first can reduce the amount exposed to a copy-and-paste or setup mistake. Wait until it arrives and is spendable before sending a larger balance. A test does not replace checking the full address, asset, and network on the later transfer.
Assets with similar names on different networks are not necessarily interchangeable. Do not infer network compatibility from a token’s name.

Check the recipient carefully for native SOL
Native SOL transfers have a recipient risk that is easy to miss: Solana’s official address-verification documentation distinguishes them from some SPL-token transfers, where mint and account checks can reject certain mistakes. A System Program transfer can add SOL to an unintended account. If that account’s program controls its lamports, you may not be able to retrieve the funds.
For native SOL, use a wallet account as the destination. Do not send it to a token mint, program, or token-account address. Verify the recipient before signing, even if the address was copied or previously used.

Keep development networks separate from real SOL
Solana’s CLI reference distinguishes development clusters from mainnet: devnet and testnet tokens have no value, while mainnet commands use real SOL. Keep development keys and assets separate from the wallet you use for valuable mainnet funds, and confirm the selected cluster before running commands or testing a workflow.
