How to Buy and Safely Store Ethereum (ETH)

Buying ETH is only the first decision. Learn who controls the keys, how to choose between exchange custody and a wallet, and how to reduce avoidable security risks.

You can buy ETH through a cryptocurrency exchange, a wallet’s purchase feature where available, or by receiving it from someone else. Buying ETH and controlling it are separate decisions: an exchange may hold the private keys for you, while self-custody means you manage the keys and recovery phrase yourself. Choose based on whether you need ETH for on-chain use, your comfort with key management, local availability, and the risks you can manage.

How to buy ETH

Ethereum.org describes several ways to acquire ETH: buy it through a centralized exchange, use an in-wallet purchase feature where offered, swap for it on a decentralized exchange, or receive it from another person. Options and eligibility vary by country and provider. Ethereum.org’s exchange listings are informational, not endorsements, and services may change the regions they support. See Ethereum.org’s guide to getting ETH.

Buying through an exchange

  1. Check local availability. Confirm the exchange accepts customers where you live and supports the payment method you intend to use.
  2. Compare the full costs and controls. Review purchase, trading, transfer, withdrawal, and any account-related fees. Check available security controls and how the provider handles customer assets.
  3. Confirm the asset and network. Make sure the order is for ETH and, if withdrawing later, that the exchange and destination wallet support the same network. Sending assets using an incompatible network can make them inaccessible.
  4. Secure the account. Use a strong, unique password and multi-factor authentication before funding it.
  5. Review the order before confirming. Check the amount of ETH, exchange rate, fees, and total cost shown by the provider.
  6. Choose where the ETH will remain. You can leave it in the exchange account or withdraw it to a wallet whose keys you control. That choice changes who controls access; it does not make the ETH itself risk-free.

Other ways to acquire ETH

A wallet may let you buy ETH through an integrated provider, but this feature can be unavailable in some locations and its fees and terms may differ from an exchange. A decentralized exchange can swap supported crypto assets for ETH, but it requires assets to swap and carries transaction and smart-contract risks. You can also receive ETH from another person; verify the address and network before anyone sends funds.

What it means to store ETH

A wallet is a tool for managing an Ethereum account and its keys; the ETH is recorded on the Ethereum network, not physically inside the wallet. The SEC’s investor bulletin explains that crypto wallets store the private keys or passcodes used to access crypto assets. Whoever controls the relevant keys can authorize transactions.

With an exchange account, the provider generally holds the keys for the ETH in its custody. With self-custody, you control the keys, usually through a wallet, and are responsible for backing them up and keeping them secure. Ethereum.org explains how Ethereum wallets buy, store, and send crypto.

Exchange custody or self-custody?

Consideration Custodial exchange account Self-custody wallet
Who controls the keys? The exchange or its custodian controls them. You control them.
Account recovery Access may be recoverable through the provider’s account process, subject to its rules and availability. You must preserve the recovery phrase or other backup; losing access without a usable backup can mean permanent loss.
Main access risks A hack, service shutdown, or insolvency can interrupt access to assets held by the provider. Lost or stolen devices, compromised keys, or a disclosed recovery phrase can expose funds; a device alone cannot prevent a malicious transaction you approve.
Convenience Can be simpler for account-based buying and recovery, but the provider controls access to the keys. Supports direct control and on-chain use, but you must manage backups and transactions yourself.
Costs to check Purchase, trading, transfer, withdrawal, and account fees, as applicable. Wallet or device costs, network transaction fees, and any purchase or transfer-provider fees.

Neither arrangement is universally safer. Custody delegates key management but adds dependence on the provider; self-custody removes that dependence but makes mistakes in backup or transaction approval your responsibility. The SEC advises reviewing a custodian’s supported assets, safeguards, access controls, failure arrangements, insurance terms, and fees. Ask whether customer assets may be lent or commingled and what privacy protections apply. Do not assume an account is insured or that customer assets are protected without confirming the applicable terms and jurisdiction.

Hot wallets, cold wallets, and hardware wallets

A hot wallet is connected to the internet, commonly as an app or service. That makes it convenient for frequent access and transactions, while increasing exposure to online threats. A cold wallet keeps keys offline and can reduce online attack exposure, but a physical device can be lost, damaged, or stolen. The SEC notes that physical cold-wallet devices typically cost money; hot wallets may initially be free, though transactions can still incur fees.

A hardware wallet is a physical device designed to keep private keys offline. Ethereum.org names Ledger and Trezor as examples and advises checking transactions before signing them. A hardware wallet can reduce some online risks, but it cannot protect funds if someone obtains your recovery phrase or if you approve a harmful transaction. Check that a device supports the Ethereum accounts and assets you intend to use, and buy only through a seller you can verify.

Protect your ETH and recovery phrase

  • Keep recovery credentials private. Never share a recovery phrase or private key with anyone, including someone claiming to be support. Ethereum.org warns that anyone with the phrase can access the accounts and drain assets; no legitimate service should ask you to provide it.
  • Make an offline backup. Write down the recovery phrase and keep it somewhere secure. Avoid screenshots, computer files, or cloud storage that could be accessed by someone else.
  • Protect account logins. For exchange accounts, use a strong, unique password and multi-factor authentication.
  • Use legitimate wallet sources. Download wallet software from official sources and carefully check website domains; fake wallet sites and support channels can steal credentials.
  • Check every transaction before signing or sending. Verify the destination address, network, amount, and other transaction details. Ethereum transactions cannot be reversed, and a mistaken transfer may not be recoverable.
  • Ignore common scam pitches. Be skeptical of guaranteed returns, messages promising to double a giveaway, unsolicited support, and requests to send ETH to recover funds. Ethereum.org says it will not contact users as official support.

Is an ether ETP the same as buying ETH?

No. A spot ether exchange-traded product (ETP) can provide exposure to ether’s price without requiring you to transact on a crypto platform or manage wallet keys. It does not give you spendable ETH in a self-custody wallet. The SEC’s September 9, 2024 investor bulletin describes these products as exchange-traded commodity trusts, not investment companies registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940, even when “ETF” is used in product names or public discussion. The bulletin also highlights volatility, product-specific risks, sponsor fees, possible differences between share prices and ether’s price, and risks in the underlying market. Compare the product disclosures and structure with your need for direct on-chain access before choosing this route. Read the SEC bulletin on ETPs providing exposure to bitcoin and ether.
