Buying bitcoin and deciding who controls it are separate choices. You can keep it with the service you used to buy it, or withdraw it to a wallet where you control the keys. A wallet does not contain bitcoin like a purse holds cash: it manages the keys that authorize transactions. That distinction matters because a lost device may be replaceable if you have a valid backup, while lost keys or a recovery phrase can make the bitcoin permanently inaccessible.
Choose how you will hold bitcoin before you buy
Your main decision is whether a provider or you will control access to the private keys. That choice affects convenience, security responsibilities, and what happens if something goes wrong.

| Option | Who controls key access? | Main benefit | Main responsibility or risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Custodial exchange or service account | The provider | Convenient access without directly managing wallet keys | You depend on the provider’s security, solvency, withdrawal policies, and account access. Investigate whether assets may be lent or commingled, and read the exact scope of any insurance terms. SEC staff bulletin; Bitcoin.org risk guidance |
| Self-custody hot wallet | You | Direct control and convenient online transactions | You must protect the wallet and backups from device compromise, malware, and phishing. Bitcoin.org wallet security guidance |
| Self-custody cold or hardware wallet | You | Keys can remain offline during ordinary storage and signing workflows | The physical device can be lost, damaged, or stolen; a recovery backup is still essential. SEC staff bulletin |
| Multisignature wallet arrangement | Multiple keys or approvers, depending on setup | A single compromised key may not be enough to authorize spending | Setup and recovery are more complex; understand the wallet’s implementation and backup process. Bitcoin.org wallet security guidance |
“Hot” and “cold” describe internet exposure, not whether a wallet is automatically safe. An internet-connected wallet is convenient but more exposed to cyberthreats. An offline device can reduce that exposure, but it does not prevent physical loss, damage, or theft.
How to buy bitcoin without assuming one provider fits everyone
Availability, payment methods, identity checks, fees, and withdrawal rules vary by country and provider. No single exchange or fee schedule is appropriate for every reader, so check local availability and the provider’s current terms before funding an account.

- Enjoy Bluetooth connectivity, iOS access, and hours of battery use with this mobile-first, secure backup signer. Freedom you can depend on.
- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
- Find a provider that serves your jurisdiction. Confirm that it supports the payment method you intend to use and permits bitcoin withdrawals to a wallet, if you plan to self-custody.
- Review the terms before depositing money. Check identity requirements, payment and trading fees, withdrawal fees and minimums, withdrawal availability, account security controls, privacy practices, and what could happen if service is suspended or the provider fails. The SEC staff bulletin also advises investors to investigate a custodian’s background, safeguards, applicable regulation, and insurance terms.
- Decide where the bitcoin will be held. If you will leave it with the provider, learn how to secure the account and what restrictions apply to withdrawals. If you will withdraw it, create your self-custody wallet and verify its backup before buying or transferring.
- Place the purchase and keep records. Save confirmations and records of purchases and transfers for your own accounting. Tax and legal obligations depend on your jurisdiction.
- For a withdrawal, verify the destination details. Compare the address and Bitcoin network details shown by the wallet and provider before confirming. Consider a small test transfer when appropriate, taking fees into account; a test does not guarantee that a later transfer will be safe.
What wallets, private keys, and recovery phrases do
A Bitcoin wallet generates or manages private keys used to authorize spending. As Bitcoin.org’s glossary explains, private keys must not be revealed because someone who has them may be able to spend the associated bitcoin. A recovery phrase is a sequence of words that can restore a wallet, so anyone who obtains it may be able to access the funds.
Do not share a recovery phrase or private key with anyone, including someone claiming to be support. Never enter it into an untrusted website or app. The SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance states in its Dec. 12, 2025 staff bulletin: “Never share your private keys, or seed phrases.” The bulletin is staff guidance, not a Commission rule, regulation, or statement. Secure a self-custody wallet and its backup
Self-custody gives you control but also makes you responsible for key security and recovery. Make a plan before you hold an amount you cannot afford to lose.

The available guidance does not establish that any particular vendor has been audited.
- Record the recovery phrase using the wallet’s intended method and keep it private. Follow that wallet’s recovery instructions, and confirm whether its backup covers all current and future addresses.
- Make and test a recovery plan while the amount at stake is small. Protect backups from theft, fire, water, and unauthorized access. Consider multiple secure physical locations so that one location is not a single point of failure; Bitcoin.org’s guidance recommends this approach.
- Keep only small amounts on an internet-connected computer or phone for everyday use. If you use an online backup, encrypt it.
- For custodial accounts, use a strong password and multifactor authentication where available. Treat unsolicited support messages, investment pitches, and requests for recovery information as suspicious.
- If using a hardware wallet, remember that it does not eliminate the need for a safe recovery phrase. Bitcoin.org’s wallet directory lists wallet options and selection criteria, but its dynamic listings are not a recommendation of a particular device.
Understand what can go wrong
Self-custody mistakes
If you lose the private keys and any usable backup, access may be permanently lost. Bitcoin.org warns that “No one—not developers, miners, wallet providers, or exchanges—can recover funds that you permanently lose from a self-custodied wallet.” Bitcoin.org, “Some things you need to know”.

Provider failure or restricted access
A custodial service can be hacked, shut down, fail, or restrict withdrawals. Before relying on one, investigate how it safeguards assets, whether assets are lent or used as collateral, whether they are commingled, how fees and privacy work, and exactly what any insurance does and does not cover. Do not assume that a provider’s insurance protects every loss.
Price, scams, and transaction privacy
Bitcoin’s price can fluctuate substantially, and scams or compromised devices can cause financial loss. Bitcoin.org says: “Bitcoin should be treated as a high-risk asset, and you should never store money that you cannot afford to lose in bitcoin.” Bitcoin.org risk guidance.

The SEC’s older Bitcoin and Other Virtual Currency-Related Investments alert warns that bitcoin held in a digital wallet or on an exchange does not have protections similar to SIPC protection for securities accounts or FDIC insurance for bank accounts. Applicable protections and legal treatment can vary by jurisdiction and may change, so check current local rules rather than assuming bitcoin is insured like a bank deposit.
