To buy ADA safely, use an exchange available in your country, compare its full purchase and withdrawal costs, and confirm it supports withdrawals on the Cardano network. Decide whether to leave ADA in the exchange account or move it to a wallet you control; if you withdraw, protect the wallet’s recovery phrase and verify the address, network, and displayed fee before approving the transfer.
What you are buying
ADA is Cardano’s native digital token. It is also used to pay transaction fees on the Cardano network. “Cardano” can refer informally to the network or the asset; the token you buy is ADA. Cardano’s ADA explainer describes its role in the network.

How to buy ADA
- Choose a service available where you live. Check the provider’s eligibility rules for your country, identity-verification requirements, and available funding methods. Cardano’s getting-started guide notes that many people buy their first ADA through an exchange, but availability varies by jurisdiction.
- Compare the complete cost before funding your account. Check for payment or deposit charges, the quoted spread or trading fee, and any withdrawal charge. Do not assume that a low advertised trading fee means the transaction is inexpensive overall.
- Confirm Cardano-network withdrawals are supported. An account may let you buy ADA without allowing you to withdraw it to a Cardano wallet. Check the withdrawal network, limits, processing time, and any provider-specific charge before purchasing if you intend to move your ADA.
- Buy only after reviewing the order details. Confirm the amount of ADA, the total amount charged, and any fee or spread shown before submitting the order. Provider-specific costs and availability depend on your location and the provider’s current terms.
Exchange account or self-custody wallet?
When ADA stays in a custodial exchange account, the provider controls the associated keys and handles withdrawals. With a self-custody wallet, you control the keys and take responsibility for safeguarding them and maintaining access. Cardano recommends avoiding keeping cryptocurrency on an exchange longer than necessary and using a wallet instead; its guidance on ADA is not a substitute for weighing the additional responsibilities of self-custody.

| Option | Who controls the keys? | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Custodial exchange account | The provider | You depend on the provider to safeguard the keys and process withdrawals. |
| Self-custody wallet | You | You are responsible for protecting the recovery phrase and maintaining access. |
For a self-custody wallet, compare software and hardware options, supported devices and assets, recovery method, usability, and any features you need, such as delegation. Cardano’s wallet guidance describes desktop, mobile, hardware, and paper-wallet forms and notes that their features differ. For larger holdings, Cardano names Ledger, Trezor, and Keystone as examples of hardware-wallet brands. Verify the current ADA support and setup requirements for the exact model you are considering; the category is optional, not a requirement for buying ADA.

Set up and protect a wallet
- Get the wallet from its official source. Confirm the product currently supports ADA and any features you need. Use the wallet provider’s official setup instructions rather than a link from an unsolicited message.
- Store the recovery phrase offline. It can restore access to the wallet, so anyone who obtains it may be able to take the funds. Cardano’s wallet security guidance warns: “Anyone with these words can restore your wallet on any device and take your funds.” Do not photograph the phrase, save it in a cloud note, type it into a website, or share it. Cardano also says: “No legitimate person or support team will ever ask for your recovery phrase.”
- Keep the receiving address separate from the recovery phrase. The address is for receiving ADA and can be shared with the sender. The recovery phrase is secret and must not be shared.
- Review wallet requests before signing. Check the transaction details and fee shown in the wallet before approving. A signature authorizes the transaction, so do not sign a request whose destination or details you do not recognize.
Understand purchase, withdrawal, and network fees
There may be several distinct charges in a purchase and transfer: a funding or deposit charge, a buy/sell spread or trading fee, an exchange withdrawal charge, and the Cardano network fee. The exchange’s withdrawal charge is not necessarily the same as the protocol fee. Check the provider’s current fee schedule for your country and payment method rather than relying on a general estimate.
Cardano calculates a minimum transaction fee using the formula a × transaction size in bytes + b, where a and b are protocol parameters that can change through the protocol update system. The Cardano Developer Portal gives 0.17–0.20 ADA as a rough typical estimate for a simple transfer; it is not a guaranteed current quote. Use the fee displayed by your wallet when preparing the transaction.

Withdraw ADA to a wallet safely
- Open your wallet and copy its receiving address. Confirm that it is an address for the intended Cardano network and account. Do not use a recovery phrase as a destination.
- In the exchange, select ADA and the Cardano withdrawal network. Make sure the network shown by the exchange matches the receiving wallet. Cardano’s developer guidance on networks explains the network discriminant, which helps distinguish networks and avoid sending mainnet funds to a testnet address.
- Check the address and withdrawal details. Compare the destination carefully, confirm the amount and any exchange charge, and review any withdrawal limits or processing information.
- Consider a small test transfer. Sending a small amount first can help verify that the destination is correct before you send the remainder, but it does not replace checking the address and network for every transfer.
- Review the wallet’s transaction and fee before signing. Confirm the details make sense, then approve only if they match your intended transfer.
What to compare before choosing
- Exchange: country eligibility, funding methods, total purchase cost, withdrawal charge, Cardano-network withdrawal support, limits and processing, and account security controls.
- Wallet: who controls the keys, software or hardware form, platform support, ADA and other asset support, recovery method, ease of use, and any needed features such as delegation.
There is no single exchange or fee schedule that can be recommended universally without knowing your country and payment method. Verify current terms directly with the exchange and wallet provider before buying or transferring.
