How to Buy a VPN With Bitcoin in 2026: A Quick Guide

Some VPN providers accept Bitcoin, but account rules, networks and payment processors differ. Here is how the checkout works at Proton VPN and ExpressVPN, and what Bitcoin does not protect.

Yes, several VPN providers accept Bitcoin, but there is no single checkout process. Each provider sets its own account rules, payment network and handling of the payment, so the steps below are the ones to check before you send any funds. Proton VPN and ExpressVPN are the two providers whose Bitcoin payment steps are documented on their own sites, and they are used here as worked examples.

What paying with Bitcoin changes, and what it does not

Choosing Bitcoin at checkout generally means the payment is not made by card. That can keep your card details off the provider’s billing record. It does not make the purchase anonymous. The provider usually still creates an account tied to an email address or another identifier, and a Bitcoin transaction is recorded on a public ledger where it can be linked to the wallet that sent it. Treat Bitcoin as one payment option with its own trade-offs, not as a privacy tool in its own right.

How the Bitcoin checkout works at two documented providers

Proton VPN

Proton VPN requires a free account before you can upgrade. Its published Bitcoin instructions describe the following sequence:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Create a free Proton account. You cannot start a paid plan without one.
  2. Go to the upgrade page, select a plan, and choose Bitcoin as the payment method at checkout.
  3. Confirm the payment network. Proton states: “All payments should be made through the Bitcoin (BTC) network.” Lightning and other networks are not supported for this flow.
  4. Send the exact amount shown from a wallet that supports on-chain Bitcoin (BTC). Do not reuse an address or QR code from an earlier payment.
  5. Allow up to 24 hours for confirmation. Pay ahead of any renewal date so your subscription is not interrupted.
  6. Save the transaction ID and the order details from checkout. You will need them if support has to trace the payment.

These steps come from Proton’s own instructions, titled “How to pay for Proton VPN with Bitcoin,” and apply only to Proton. They are not a general VPN checkout procedure.

#1 Best Overall
Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN’s Bitcoin page says to select Bitcoin at checkout and continue to BitPay, a third-party payment processor. The payment is therefore completed on BitPay’s side, not on ExpressVPN’s. ExpressVPN’s page also describes an email requirement for the account. Check the current checkout screens before paying, because the amounts, wallet instructions and any BitPay steps are shown only when you reach that page.

Providers that accept Bitcoin, and what is verified for each

An independent comparison from OpenBitcoin, with prices checked in August 2026, lists Mullvad, IVPN, NordVPN, Proton VPN and ExpressVPN as Bitcoin-accepting providers. The same comparison separates services that use numbered accounts from those that require an email account, but the sources reviewed for this guide do not confirm which provider falls into which group. Use the table below as a starting point for your own checks.

Checks to complete before you send Bitcoin

  • Payment availability: confirm Bitcoin is offered for the region and plan you want, on the provider’s current checkout page.
  • Account requirements: find out whether an email address or other personal information is needed to open the account.
  • Network: confirm the network the provider accepts. Sending on the wrong network can delay or lose a payment.
  • Processor: note whether a third party such as BitPay handles the payment.
  • Amount and timing: send the exact amount shown and allow for confirmation time before renewal.
  • Refund and renewal terms: check whether refunds are available for crypto payments and how renewals are charged.
  • Tax and billing details: confirm the billing country and any tax treatment that applies to your purchase.

Legal and regional limits

Whether a VPN is lawful to use, and whether Bitcoin payments are permitted in your location, depend on local rules that were not checked for this guide. Confirm both before buying, and use the provider’s current checkout page for availability, since payment options can differ by country.

If something goes wrong

If a payment is not confirmed within the time the provider states, do not send a second payment to a new address without checking first. Contact the provider’s support with the transaction ID, the amount, the sending wallet’s details and the time you sent it. Proton’s instructions specifically warn against reusing an address or QR code from a previous payment, so generate a fresh one for each order.

Provider rankings, prices and payment acceptance change over time. The steps above reflect Proton’s and ExpressVPN’s published instructions as of this guide’s writing in October 2026, and should be checked again at the point of purchase.
