The graphic novel is Star Wars: Smugglers and Scoundrels: The Race for Jabba’s Bounty, an original middle-grade book written by Cavan Scott and illustrated by Christian Colbert. Its official premise is a competition: Jabba has lost a family heirloom, and a field of smugglers and scoundrels races to recover it. The “game-theory lesson” description comes from a TechTimes article by Frederick Rodriguez, dated September 16, 2026. It is an analytical reading of the premise, not a claim made by the publisher or the creators.

What the book is and what its premise establishes

StarWars.com announced the collaboration between Lucasfilm Publishing and Mad Cave Studios on January 23, 2026, describing a set of original all-ages graphic novels for middle-grade readers. The Race for Jabba’s Bounty is one of those titles, with Cavan Scott as writer and Christian Colbert as artist.

The publisher’s synopsis sets up the story in three elements:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The object: a family heirloom that belongs to Jabba the Hutt and has been lost.
  • The contest: a race among smugglers and scoundrels to recover it.
  • The tone: the synopsis promises risky maneuvers, double-crosses, and questionable morals.

The named competitors are Han Solo and Chewbacca, Han’s rival Jaxxon T. Tumperakki, Boba Fett, and Greedo. The synopsis lists them as possible competitors in the race. It does not give a plot summary beyond that setup, so anything about how the race unfolds should be treated as unconfirmed until readers reach the book itself.

Who Jaxxon is and why the book centers him

Jaxxon T. Tumperakki is a Lepi smuggler, a rabbit-like species, and one of the franchise’s more unusual characters. Cavan Scott described him this way: “Jaxxon is Star Wars’ great underdog… well, under-rabbit. Doomed never to be taken seriously by his fellow scoundrels, the Lepi smuggler was one of the very first characters I ever experienced in Star Wars, long before I saw the films.”

Scott has also said the graphic novel chronicles Jaxxon’s first meeting with his long-term rival, Han Solo. For readers who know Jaxxon mainly as a background figure, that gives the book a clear character focus: the race is partly a story about a smuggler who is consistently underestimated.

Edition details and the release-date conflict

The publisher’s listings for The Race for Jabba’s Bounty (Papercutz / Simon & Schuster) give the following format details:

Format ISBN Price Pages (per publisher) Release date (per source)
Hardcover 9781545836477 $19.99 list 88 November 17, 2026 (publisher listing)
Paperback 9781545836484 Not stated Not stated Not stated
Fixed-layout ebook 9781545836491 $9.99 list Not stated November 17, 2026 (publisher listing)

The age range on the publisher’s listing is 7 to 12.

The sources disagree on two points. The January 23, 2026 StarWars.com announcement gives a September 15, 2026 availability date. The publisher’s current hardcover and ebook listings give November 17, 2026. The TechTimes article, dated September 16, 2026, says the book arrived September 15 and lists 112 pages, while the publisher lists 88. The available material does not explain whether these differences reflect separate formats, a schedule change, or an error. Before ordering, confirm the page count and date for the exact ISBN you want with your retailer or the publisher.

Why a race reads as a game-theory problem

TechTimes describes the setup as an “all-pay” contest. In an all-pay contest, every entrant spends effort or takes on risk whether or not they win, and only one entrant collects the prize. That structure is a useful way to read the premise even though the publisher never uses the term.

Two features of the setup make the reading plausible. First, the synopsis describes a shared goal, so the racers have a reason to watch one another. Second, the prize goes to one winner, so a competitor who is behind has an incentive to slow the others down, mislead them, or take the prize by other means. The announced double-crosses fit that incentive structure.

Where the analogy holds

  • Each rival pays a cost to enter the race, which fits the all-pay idea.
  • The promised double-crosses are the kind of move a winner-take-all setup tends to invite.
  • A temporary alliance can make sense while the goal is shared, then break down once the prize is in reach.

Where the analogy stops

  • The publisher’s synopsis does not describe the racers’ costs, their payoffs, or what each one expects to gain by betrayal.
  • Nothing in the publisher’s material says Jabba designed the contest to produce these outcomes, or that the book presents betrayal as inevitable.
  • The game-theory label is an analytical lens applied by TechTimes. It should not be read as a formal model that the book works through on the page.

Why Jabba would post the bounty to several hunters

The synopsis does not explain Jabba’s reasons for running a race rather than hiring one hunter. A game-theory reading gives one possible explanation: a contest with several entrants can produce competition among them, and that competition can make the outcome more uncertain for each of them. That is a reading of the premise, not a fact about the story. Readers who want Jabba’s motives should look for them in the book.

Is the book suitable for readers new to Star Wars?

The publisher lists the book for ages 7 to 12 and describes it as an original story rather than an adaptation. The sources reviewed do not address whether knowledge of the films is needed to follow it. The cast includes several well-known characters, including Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Boba Fett, so readers who recognize those names will have some context. Readers who do not should still be able to follow the premise, which is a race for a lost family heirloom with a set of rivals.

Practical checklist before buying

  • Confirm the format and ISBN. The hardcover is 9781545836477, the paperback is 9781545836484, and the fixed-layout ebook is 9781545836491.
  • Check the release date on the retailer’s page, since the sources give different dates.
  • Check the page count on the edition you are buying. The publisher lists 88 pages; TechTimes lists 112.
  • Check the price on the live listing. The publisher lists $19.99 for the hardcover and $9.99 for the fixed-layout ebook; the paperback price is not stated in the sources.

For a reader who wants the story rather than the game-theory reading, the premise is simple: a lost heirloom, a field of rivals, and a race that, as the synopsis promises, will involve risky maneuvers and questionable morals.

The “game-theory lesson” framing is worth reading as a way to think about the premise, but it is not the publisher’s description of the book. Treat the official synopsis as the description of what the book is, and the TechTimes article as one way to interpret it.
