How to Gift a PlayStation Game Without Buying the Wrong Edition

Before buying a PlayStation game as a gift, confirm the recipient’s console (PS4 or PS5), whether a PS5 has a disc drive, and the exact platform and edition they want. Check the game’s PlayStation Store listing for edition contents, age rating, compatibility notices, and system requirements. If you are not sure what they would choose, a PlayStation Store gift card can leave that choice to them—but its region must match their account.

Start by checking the recipient’s console

Ask whether they play on PS4 or PS5. If they have a PS5, find out whether it has a disc drive before choosing a physical game. A PS4 game disc cannot be used on a PS5 Digital Edition.

Some eligible PS4 games offer a disc-based upgrade to a PS5 digital version. That route still requires a PS5 with a disc drive, and the PS4 disc must remain inserted while the recipient plays the upgraded game. Verify the exact game and edition

Once you know the console, confirm the game’s platform and the edition the recipient wants. Different editions may include different add-ons or other entitlements; contents are specific to each game. Do not assume a special edition includes a particular disc, downloadable content, or other extra.

On the PlayStation Store, read the listing description before buying. PlayStation advises checking that you have the right edition and reviewing the age rating, platform or subscription requirements, compatibility notices, and system requirements. Choose between a gift card, digital purchase, and disc

PlayStation’s 2025 U.S. gift guide recommends Store gift cards when the buyer is unsure what to choose. Recipients can use them for games, add-ons, or subscriptions. A direct digital purchase avoids shipping and disc compatibility, but only makes sense when you are confident about the intended title and edition.

Check the voucher region before buying a gift card

PlayStation Store voucher codes must be for the same region as the recipient’s account. PlayStation says account region cannot be changed, and the voucher indicates its region. If you and the recipient live in different countries, confirm the account’s region before purchasing; do not assume a card bought in your country will redeem on their account. Account for age ratings and family settings

Check the game’s age rating, especially if the recipient is a child. PlayStation says child accounts can buy only content with suitable age ratings, and purchases depend on spending limits set by the family manager. If you are uncertain whether a specific game is permitted for the recipient’s account, confirm the rating and account settings before buying.
