For a configurable batch, use shot-scraper with a YAML list of URL and output-file pairs, then pass --user-agent to shot-scraper multi. Choose Playwright instead when you need a scripted loop, per-page logic, or browser interactions. Both let you set the user agent used for navigation and capture.

Make batch behavior predictable
- Use a distinct output path for every URL so one capture does not overwrite another.
- Keep width, height, wait behavior, and full-page or viewport capture consistent when comparing pages.
- Use
--timeoutto limit how long a capture can take. - Choose
--failor--skipdeliberately for HTTP errors so missing captures are visible or intentionally omitted. - Use
--no-clobberto skip output files that already exist, or-oto select particular configured outputs. - Inspect a few captures before running a larger batch; different sites may respond differently to the same user agent or wait settings.

Bulk screenshots with Playwright
For a custom script, create one browser context with the desired user agent and viewport, then use it for each page. This illustrative JavaScript pattern follows Playwright’s documented context, navigation, and screenshot APIs; add site-appropriate waits and error handling for your batch:

Add waits and error handling for real pages
A bare navigation may finish before a site’s important content is ready, or it may fail. Choose a wait condition that matches the page rather than assuming every site loads the same way. For larger jobs, handle navigation and screenshot errors per URL, record failures alongside their URLs, and continue only if that is the behavior you want. Close each page after capture and the context when the batch is complete.

A custom user agent is not full device emulation
A user-agent string can influence what a server returns, but changing it alone does not set every browser or device characteristic. If the purpose is to capture a mobile layout, also configure the relevant viewport, screen size, and touch behavior—or use an appropriate device profile. Keep the browser engine and these settings consistent across a comparison batch.
Troubleshooting bulk captures
- The CLI rejects
--user-agent: Checkshot-scraper multi --helpfor the installed version’s syntax, and confirm the option is placed on the multi command. - A screenshot is missing: Check the URL, output path, timeout, and HTTP-error behavior. With
--skip, failed pages may be omitted by design; use a visible failure mode if the batch must be audited. - Several pages appear in one output or replace each other: Give each YAML job a unique output filename. Use
--no-clobberwhen existing files should not be replaced. - The page looks like desktop despite a mobile user agent: Set the viewport and other needed device characteristics; the user agent by itself does not configure them.
- Content is absent or incomplete: Add a wait condition suited to the site and review whether you need a full-page capture. A consistent wait improves comparability but does not guarantee identical rendering across unrelated sites.
- The Playwright loop stops on one page: Catch navigation or capture errors per job if later URLs should still run, and log which URL failed so skipped work is not mistaken for a successful screenshot.
