For a repeatable visual audit, keep a reviewed URL list and use a scripted browser capture with a fixed viewport and browser runtime. Capture the first screen, the full page, or a specific region according to what you need to inspect; save each image with a stable filename and its capture conditions. Playwright supports all three capture types, and its documentation cautions that rendering can vary across environments. For a small one-off list, a batch browser extension may be faster to set up.
Plan the audit before capturing pages
Start by deciding what the screenshots need to answer. A first-screen review focuses on what shoppers initially see; a full-page capture helps inspect below-the-fold merchandising; an element capture isolates a region such as a product grid or filter panel. Long listing pages may warrant both viewport and full-page images.

- Prepare and review the category URL list. Give each URL a short, stable identifier.
- Choose the capture scope for each page: viewport, full page, selected element, or a useful combination.
- Set consistent browser and viewport conditions. Record the original URL, capture time, viewport dimensions, browser/runtime version, and relevant consent or login state.
- Decide whether the review requires consistent region, currency, personalization, inventory, promotions, or other page state. These can change what the category page shows.
- Test the setup on a few representative URLs before processing the full list.
A screenshot records a rendered page at a particular moment; it does not explain why a difference occurred or prove every shopper saw the same state.

Bulk screenshot category pages with Playwright
Install Playwright for Node.js and its browser runtime according to the official screenshot documentation. The example below reads a CSV containing id,url, opens each page sequentially, captures a viewport and full-page image, and writes an index with the URL and capture metadata. It is a starting point: real stores may need page-specific consent handling, login, image waits, or scrolling to load lazy content.

Playwright documents locator screenshots and buffers as well as page screenshots. Use a selector that uniquely identifies the region, and handle a missing element as a page-specific failure rather than silently treating it as a valid capture.

Keep captures comparable and reviewable
Use deterministic filenames and an index
Names such as category-id__viewport__2026-10-03.png and category-id__full-page__2026-10-03.png make files sortable and traceable. Keep a CSV or JSON index that maps every file to its exact URL, timestamp, viewport, browser/runtime, and notes about consent or login. Separate images are easier to annotate or process; a combined PDF can be convenient for sequential collaborative review.

Hold the capture environment steady
Playwright notes that rendering can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode, and recommends using the same environment as the baseline for consistent comparisons. Record setup changes and compare screenshots taken under matching conditions. Its test-snapshot documentation says it waits until two consecutive screenshots match before comparing: Playwright visual comparisons.
Interpret differences as evidence, not diagnosis
Unexpected visual changes need manual review. Differences may reflect capture setup or page state—including region, currency, consent, personalization, stock, or promotions—not necessarily a layout change. Full-page screenshots are tall and can be awkward to inspect at natural size, so pair them with viewport images when the first screen matters. Element captures sharpen a focused review but cannot show surrounding page hierarchy.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
- Throughput: Sequential capture is easier to control and gentler on a store than aggressive parallel browsing. Choose a pace compatible with the site’s operational constraints.
- Reliability: A successful navigation event does not guarantee that images, filters, or product rows have finished rendering. Wait for the content your audit actually depends on and retain errors in the index.
- Storage: Full-page images consume more space and are harder to compare at a glance than viewport captures. Capture both only when the audit question benefits from both.
- Cost: Playwright itself is a software-only capture path, though browser runtime, storage, and engineering time remain operational considerations. Extension and hosted-service prices or limits should be checked on their current product pages; the cited Pageshot evidence does not state a price.

Troubleshooting common capture failures
- Product rows or images are missing: The page may lazy-load below the fold. Scroll through the listing or wait for the relevant product selector before capturing, then verify a sample full-page image.
- Consent banner covers the page: The consent state differs from the intended audit setup. Decide whether to capture the banner or accept consent as a visitor, and apply the same state consistently across pages.
- Screenshot is blank or incomplete: Navigation may have completed before the content became visible, or the site may have failed to load. Add a wait for a stable page marker, preserve the navigation status and error in the index, and retry selectively rather than marking the image as valid.
- Element screenshot times out: The selector may be absent, ambiguous, or not visible. Confirm the selector against that page and record the failure instead of substituting an unrelated region.
- Images differ despite no intended site change: Check operating system, browser/runtime version, viewport, headless mode, and page state against the baseline before attributing the change to the store.
- Batch disrupts the site or produces intermittent failures: Reduce navigation concurrency or pace, review the store’s access rules, and separate transient failures from completed captures in the index.
