How to Build Skills That Make You Better at AI-Assisted Coding

AI can help produce code, but developers still need to frame problems, understand changes, test behavior, and own the result. Here’s a practical way to build those skills.

No skill is guaranteed to remain beyond AI’s reach. But developers can build the judgment needed to direct AI coding tools, spot errors, learn from generated code, and take responsibility for what ships. The strongest practice combines software fundamentals and debugging with testing, task framing, and communication—not simply writing code faster.

What does it mean to build skills AI coding tools can’t replace?

There is no validated list of skills that AI coding tools can never replicate. A more useful goal is to become the person who can define the problem, assess whether a proposed solution fits, and verify its consequences. That matters even when AI produces much of the code.

Evidence on AI-assisted development measures different outcomes. In one field-study analysis, 4,867 developers across three organizations completed 26.08% more tasks on average with AI coding assistance; the reported standard error was 10.3%. That is a productivity result, not evidence of learning or a guaranteed gain in another workplace (Microsoft Research, June 2025). A separate, small learning experiment found lower immediate quiz performance among AI-assisted participants than among those who hand-coded a task. The findings are not contradictory: they concern different settings and outcomes.

Which skills should you practice?

Read code and understand how it works

Practice tracing control flow, inputs, state, outputs, and the way a component interacts with the rest of a system. Learn the purpose of interfaces and design choices, not just the syntax. Reading code lets you judge what an AI-generated change actually does before you accept it.

In Anthropic’s 2025 experiment, 52 participants—mostly junior software engineers who used Python weekly and had more than a year of experience—learned two features of the unfamiliar Trio library, then took an immediate quiz. Researchers assessed debugging, code reading, code writing, and conceptual understanding, and highlighted reading, debugging, and concepts as important to overseeing generated code. The task and sample are narrow; the results do not establish long-term effects or outcomes for experienced developers generally (Anthropic’s study).

Debug before asking for a fix

When something breaks, reproduce the failure, inspect relevant inputs and state, form a hypothesis, and test it with a small change. Then, if you ask AI for help, request an explanation of the likely cause and a way to verify it—not just replacement code.

Debugging questions showed the largest score gap between the AI-assisted and hand-coding groups in Anthropic’s experiment. The researchers suggested that resolving errors independently may have supported learning, but that is a hypothesis, not a proven mechanism. In this task, AI-assisted participants finished about two minutes earlier on average; the difference was not statistically significant.

Use AI as a tutor, not only a code generator

Ask the assistant to explain an unfamiliar API, compare two approaches, identify assumptions, or quiz you on code it generated. Read the response critically and check it against documentation and tests. In Anthropic’s small experiment, participants who asked conceptual or follow-up questions tended to perform better on the immediate mastery quiz than those who delegated code generation or debugging. That pattern is suggestive, not a guaranteed learning method.

Test behavior and review changes

Turn requirements into checks: what should happen, what should not happen, and which edge cases could alter the result? Run tests, inspect the diff, and look for changes that are unnecessary or inconsistent with the surrounding code. Review reliability and security as well as whether the happy path works.

Testing and coding are among the areas where developers report using AI support. But assistance does not transfer responsibility for checking the result. Treat generated tests as proposals too: confirm they cover the intended behavior rather than merely pass alongside the implementation.

Learn the system around the code

Build enough adjacent engineering knowledge to understand how a change is deployed, operated, secured, and used. A feature that works on a developer’s machine may still create problems in production or disrupt a user’s workflow. Consider failure impact and maintenance needs as part of the engineering task.

A May 2025 exploratory preprint based on interviews with 21 developers mapped 12 work goals and 75 associated tasks across a six-step workflow. It groups relevant expertise into AI use, core software engineering, adjacent engineering, and adjacent non-engineering skills. The framework is a useful map, not a representative survey or a definitive skills checklist (Kam and colleagues’ preprint).

Practice communication and mentoring

Ask people what they need before deciding what to build; explain trade-offs in terms they can act on; and make room for mentoring and collaboration. These skills help connect technical work to its human consequences. AI may assist with preparation or documentation, but a useful engineering decision still requires understanding the people and context involved.

Microsoft Research’s October 2025 mixed-methods study, which included 860 developers, found that AI use and desired support vary by task: developers reported strong use and wanted improvements in coding and testing, while documentation and operations were associated with toil reduction. The study also found limits around mentoring and other relationship-centered work. These are reported practices and perceptions, not fixed boundaries on AI capability (Microsoft Research’s study).

A practical routine for building these skills

  1. Frame the task. Write down the intended outcome, constraints, affected users, and what a successful result would look like before asking AI to implement anything.
  2. Make a first diagnosis. For a bug or unfamiliar code, inspect the relevant behavior and form a hypothesis yourself. Use AI to challenge or explain your reasoning, rather than letting it skip the reasoning step.
  3. Ask for understanding. Request explanations, alternatives, assumptions, or a short quiz. Check important claims against project documentation and existing tests.
  4. Verify the change. Run appropriate tests, inspect the diff, and consider edge cases, security, reliability, and maintainability before integration.
  5. Explain the decision. Communicate what changed, why the approach fits, what trade-offs remain, and what others should monitor.

Shift the balance of practice to match the task. Routine, toil-heavy work may be a good place to use AI for speed. For systems-facing work, give extra attention to reliability, security, and operational effects. For human-facing decisions, spend time eliciting needs and discussing trade-offs. When the goal is to learn, favor explanation and active review over simply accepting a finished answer.

Keep responsibility with the engineer

AI can make code production faster without making every result correct or appropriate. In a September 29, 2025 Associated Press interview, Anthropic Claude Code product manager Cat Wu said, “We definitely want to make it very clear that the responsibility, at the end of the day, is in the hands of the engineers.” That is a product leader’s statement, not an experimental finding, but it captures the practical obligation: verify the behavior, fit, and risks of a change before shipping it (Associated Press interview).
