You can build useful AI skills without becoming a programmer: start with a recurring, low-risk task at work, practise it with an employer-approved tool, and learn to check the result before using it. For most workers, the goal is general AI literacy and sound judgment—not developing AI models.

Which AI skills matter for most jobs?

Most workers need to understand what AI can and cannot do, interact with AI systems effectively, recognize ethical and practical risks, and critically evaluate the output. The OECD’s 2025 brief states that “Most workers across the OECD only require a general understanding of AI.” It cites an estimate that about 1% of jobs require specific, complex AI skills; that is not a claim that only 1% of workers will use AI. A separate OECD estimate published in 2026 says fewer than 1% of workers need advanced AI-specific skills such as programming or model development.

Practical capability combines tool use with broader workplace skills. You may need digital fluency, the ability to use and interpret data, problem-solving, creativity, and the judgment to correct or reject an AI response. The OECD’s 2026 skills brief describes growing importance for digital and data skills, alongside continuing human strengths such as problem-solving, creativity, and innovation. 1. Choose a repeated, low-risk task. List work that involves drafting, summarizing, organizing information, brainstorming, or analyzing data. Pick something where a person can readily check the result, such as turning non-sensitive notes into a draft agenda. Avoid starting with decisions affecting someone’s rights, opportunities, or access to services.
  2. Check the rules and select an approved tool. Follow your employer’s approved-tool and data-handling policies. Learn what information the system needs, what output it can produce, and where it may be inaccurate or biased. Do not enter sensitive work information unless your organization permits it.
  3. Describe the task and its quality criteria. Tell the tool the intended audience, purpose, relevant constraints, desired format, and what a useful result must include. Treat this as clear task communication, not a magic prompt formula. Do not supply details that policy says must remain private.
  4. Review, correct, or reject the response. Check factual claims against reliable sources, validate calculations or code where relevant, and edit for context and tone. Look for missing assumptions, bias, and unsupported citations. If you cannot verify an important claim, do not use it as fact.
  5. Compare the workflow with your usual method. On a few comparable examples, record time spent, quality, corrections needed, and any risks or policy issues. A faster first draft may still require substantial review; measure the full task rather than assuming AI saves time.
  6. Build depth that fits your role. Add data interpretation, automation, or technical skills when they match your responsibilities. Ask a manager or knowledgeable colleague for feedback, and share repeatable practices with your team.

The sequence reflects OECD guidance to connect training with work context and practical applications; it is a learning approach, not a method whose results have been independently tested across occupations.

How do I use AI responsibly at work?

Keep a person accountable for decisions and consequential communications. AI can help prepare material, but it does not take responsibility for whether that material is accurate, fair, appropriate, or permitted. Before using an output, check:

The OECD’s 2026 brief on public-sector workforces says, “Training should be tailored to the work context and include practical applications rather than only provide information.” It also discusses evidence suggesting trainer-led courses—online or in person—can be more effective than self-paced ones. Treat this as design guidance from a public-sector context, not a universal ranking of courses for every job. The brief also recommends supporting continued learning through communities of practice and opportunities to innovate, and measuring training impact. What do workforce figures say about AI training?

Training availability and need vary, so broad estimates should not be mistaken for a prescription for any one worker. The OECD’s 2025 analysis found that 14 of 21 countries it examined had invested in AI-specific training programmes. In catalogues from Australia, Germany, Singapore, and the United States, the share of analyzed courses containing AI content ranged from 0.3% to 5.5%. The OECD cautions that catalogue figures can miss informal or workplace learning.

The OECD’s 2026 brief reports that more than half of workers using AI say their employer funded training, and that trained AI users are more likely to report positive outcomes. These are reported associations, not proof that training alone caused those outcomes. In the same brief, 40% of employers in manufacturing and finance cite skills as a main barrier to AI adoption; that figure applies to those industries and the survey context, not all employers. See the OECD’s discussion of skills and AI.
