Radio telescopes detect and pinpoint fast radio bursts; the James Webb Space Telescope helps scientists find and measure the galaxies associated with them. In the case of FRB 20240304B, Webb revealed a distant, unexpectedly small star-forming dwarf galaxy, helping researchers establish the burst’s cosmic setting without solving what causes the bursts.
What each telescope contributed
MeerTRAP used South Africa’s MeerKAT radio telescope to detect and localize FRB 20240304B on March 4, 2024. The radio data suggested the burst was extremely distant, but identifying its host galaxy was needed to confirm and characterize that distance. NASA reports that the largest ground-based telescopes had not found a galaxy at the precisely localized position, so the team followed up with Webb. NASA’s account of the discovery describes the roles of the observatories.

| Observatory or instrument | Role in this study |
|---|---|
| MeerKAT with MeerTRAP | Detected the radio burst and localized its position. |
| Webb’s NIRCam | Detected the galaxy at the burst’s position in infrared observations. |
| Webb’s NIRSpec | Measured the galaxy’s spectrum, from which the team determined its redshift. |
Webb did not detect the radio flash itself. Radio observations identified where the transient occurred; Webb’s infrared imaging and spectroscopy revealed the associated galaxy and helped establish its distance and properties. Webb is an infrared observatory orbiting the Sun near the second Lagrange point, about 1.5 million kilometers from Earth. NASA’s Webb mission overview describes the observatory.

What Webb found about the burst’s distance
NIRSpec measured the host galaxy’s redshift at 2.148. NASA says this places the galaxy at a time when the universe was about 3 billion years after the Big Bang. Redshift is a property of the galaxy’s light that helps astronomers estimate its distance and the era from which that light traveled; it does not, by itself, explain the burst’s physical origin. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why the host galaxy surprised researchers
NASA describes the host as a small dwarf galaxy that is actively forming stars. The team found it was about 1,000 times less massive than expected, unlike the massive star-forming galaxies that make up most known FRB hosts. The unusual host expands the range of environments researchers can examine when testing ideas about where fast radio bursts arise. NASA’s release includes the team’s account of the finding.
What the discovery does—and does not—tell us
The result shows that at least one distant FRB is associated with a host unlike the massive star-forming galaxies familiar from many other cases. That evidence can help scientists assess theories about the environments that produce bursts, but it does not establish a specific burst mechanism. As lead author Manisha Caleb of the University of Sydney told NASA: “What makes fast radio bursts interesting is that we don’t know what generates them. We have theories about what objects produce them, but we don’t have conclusive proof.”
