How to Build One Credit Ledger for 41 AI Models

A practical architecture for one credit balance across asynchronous AI jobs: reserve before dispatch, claim failures once, process jobs in the background, and make payment webhooks replay-safe.

To let users run paid AI image, video, and audio jobs against one credit balance, reserve credits atomically when creating each job, then make every completion or refund path compete for the same conditional state change. That is the design described by Snap AI for its studio supporting 41 models; the article presents an implementation, not an independently audited production benchmark.

What the 41-model studio is designed to do

Snap AI’s DEV Community article, posted October 1, 2026, describes a web studio that routes image, video, and audio requests through one credit balance. It names Next.js 16, Prisma 7, and Postgres as the application stack. OpenRouter handles most image and video models, while fal covers capabilities the article says OpenRouter does not expose, including lip sync, text-to-speech, music, upscaling, background removal, and face swap. Read the implementation account.

The count of 41 is the article’s description of the studio’s model registry, not an industry-wide statistic or a separately documented count methodology. The engineering challenge is less about the number of models than ensuring that spending, job status, refunds, and payment events remain consistent when requests overlap or arrive more than once.

How to prevent two requests from spending the same credits

Create the job and debit its cost in the same database transaction, before submitting work to a provider. The article describes a conditional balance update that checks for sufficient credits and decrements them as one operation. A successful movement also creates a ledger entry recording the resulting balance.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.

This avoids a race where two requests both read the same balance, each decide there is enough to spend, and then both dispatch paid work. Because the balance check and debit are part of the conditional update, only a request that can meet the balance condition succeeds; the transaction ties that reservation to the job record. Provider work should start only after that transaction commits.

How to refund a failed job only once

Several parts of an application may notice a failure: the provider submission handler, a status poll, a background worker, or a timeout. Treat failure handling as a claim on the job’s state rather than as an unconditional instruction to add credits.

  1. Attempt a conditional update that changes the job to failed only if it is still queued or running and has not already been refunded.
  2. In the same transaction, grant the refund and record the ledger movement only when that update changes a row.
  3. If another handler already claimed the failure, the update matches no row, so that handler must not issue another refund.

That pattern makes the state transition the gatekeeper for the money movement. It protects the ledger even when multiple failure paths race, provided all of them use the same claim-and-refund transaction.

What happens when the user closes the tab

Browser polling can advance a job while the user watches, but it cannot be the only mechanism that makes progress: a user may close the tab or lose connectivity. Snap AI’s article describes a background sweeper that runs every 20 seconds to advance non-terminal jobs. It also says jobs older than 30 minutes are failed and refunded through the same conditional claim path.

Use the browser to display progress, not to own the job’s lifecycle. The server-side worker or sweeper should be able to submit, poll, finish, or fail work without a live browser request, and every terminal path should preserve the one-winner refund rule.

Why image and video jobs need different handling

Video: asynchronous provider jobs

The article describes video generation as an asynchronous flow: create a provider job, poll its status, then download the result using the API key. This fits a job record that remains pending while a worker or the status path checks for completion.

Images: long synchronous calls behind an ID

Image generation is described as synchronous and potentially taking more than a minute. Rather than hold the initial request open, the implementation starts image work in the background and returns a job ID immediately. It keeps the result in an in-process map.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That map assumes a single application instance: a later request routed to another instance will not necessarily see the state held in the first process, and a restart loses in-memory state. The article says to replace it with a queue if the app scales out. More generally, any state needed by multiple instances or after a restart must live in shared durable storage or a shared job system, not only in process memory.

How to make Stripe credit grants safe to replay

Payment webhooks can be delivered again, so a handler must distinguish a new event from a replay. Snap AI describes granting subscription credits on invoice.paid and top-up credits on checkout.session.completed. It stores Stripe event IDs in the same transaction as the credit grant, making a repeated event a no-op.

The article says the credit amount is determined from the invoice’s price ID rather than the amount paid. That ties the grant to the configured product price mapping; the payment amount itself is not described as the credit rule.

How to handle provider safety rejections

The article normalizes provider safety errors to content_blocked and routes them through the same failure-and-refund claim used for other job failures. It also describes a per-user, per-day cap on those refunds to limit attempts to probe the safety filter without cost. A consistent error category helps the application apply the same terminal-state protections instead of letting safety rejections bypass the ledger.

What to test before connecting paid providers

The implementation account describes a mock provider that uses the same interface as real providers and returns placeholder images and sample clips. Because it can run without API keys, it gives developers a way to exercise job creation and failure handling before making provider calls.

  • Submit overlapping requests against a balance that can cover only one, and confirm that no more than one job reserves the credits.
  • Trigger failure handling through competing paths and confirm that only the winning state transition issues a refund.
  • Stop browser polling and verify that server-side processing still advances the job.
  • Replay a payment event and confirm that the event record prevents a second credit grant.
  • Run the app across multiple instances and verify that job state is shared rather than stranded in one process’s memory.

In its closing advice, the Snap AI account emphasizes keeping money movement and state changes in one transaction, making completion paths conditional so only one can win, and building the fake provider early. Those are design recommendations from the article; it does not report an independent audit or production-load test.
