A Genkit flow can be called inside a registered senro function step, so you can keep model logic in Genkit while senro handles graph dependencies, execution, step state, and run-level visibility.
Where Genkit ends and senro begins
These libraries solve different problems. Genkit provides the AI flow and model integration; senro provides pipeline planning and execution. In practical terms, a flow is a unit of AI work, while a senro step is a unit in a larger workflow graph.

| Concern | Genkit | senro |
|---|---|---|
| Primary responsibility | Define typed AI flows and integrate models or providers. | Represent a workflow as a graph, resolve a plan, and execute its steps. |
| Unit of work | A flow with defined input and output types. | A graph node, such as a registered Go function or command step. |
| Visibility | Flow tracing and AI-work visibility. | Run facts exposed through an append-only event stream that clients can attach to. |
| Retries and caching | Keep model and flow behavior within the AI layer. | Coordinate work at the pipeline-step level; configure policy with the step’s inputs and side effects in mind. |
| Failure analysis | Supplies the configured Genkit instance and model integration. | An optional separate analyzer module can propose explanations for failed steps. |
As the example author Xavier Portilla Edo puts it, “A Genkit flow is a great unit of AI work and a poor unit of orchestration.” That is an architectural framing, not a vendor guarantee: the useful distinction is that Genkit owns the AI operation and senro owns how that operation fits into a run.

What the example demonstrates—and which versions it reports
The example article, dated September 11, 2026, reports using Genkit Go v1.13.1, senro v1.4.0, and googleai/gemini-2.5-flash. Those are the versions and model named for that example, not a claim that they are the latest releases or a current compatibility guarantee. The author says the sample ran against the real Gemini API; that result is the author’s report, not an independent execution or verification.

Before adopting the sample, check the current Genkit Go project documentation, the senro package documentation, and the provider’s current setup guidance. The available sources do not establish a complete compatibility matrix, current API pricing, or regional model availability for this exact combination.
Build the pipeline around a typed flow
1. Add and verify the dependencies
Install Genkit Go and the senro module using the dependency declarations in the example article, then check the package release documentation before pinning versions in a fresh project. Because the article’s commands and versions describe its September 2026 example, do not treat them as evergreen installation instructions.
2. Define the AI operation as a Genkit flow
Give the flow explicit input and output types. The example uses a summarization flow: it receives document content and invokes Genkit generation inside the flow. Keeping this contract typed makes the model task independently callable and gives the orchestration step a clear handoff boundary.

Configure the provider in the application rather than embedding credentials in source. The Google Generative AI plugin guidance warns against putting API keys directly in code. Use the application’s environment or a secrets service, and verify provider-specific setup for the deployment environment.
3. Register a senro function step that invokes the flow
Register a Go function with senro and make its step implementation read the required input or workspace data, call the typed Genkit flow, and return the flow result in the form expected by subsequent steps. Keep both directions explicit: input extraction should fail clearly when required data is missing, and a flow error should be returned as a step error rather than converted into a success-shaped result.
The boundary should remain simple: the senro function adapts pipeline data to the flow’s input type and passes the flow’s output back into the pipeline. It should not duplicate the prompt or model-generation logic that belongs in the Genkit flow.

4. Add downstream work as a separate graph step
For multi-document work, model independent document summaries as separate steps and make the dependencies visible in the graph. A later combining step can depend on those summary outputs and produce the final synthesis. senro’s graph-and-plan model lets the run represent those relationships explicitly; its event stream provides run facts clients can follow.
This structure gives each model task a step boundary, so a failed summary can be distinguished from a failure in the combining stage. It also gives caching and retry policy a meaningful unit: a particular step with particular inputs, rather than an opaque all-in-one AI operation.

Retry only work that may succeed on another attempt
Use retries for transient infrastructure failures, such as a temporary service interruption, only when the operation and policy make replay appropriate. A deterministic error caused by invalid input or a flawed prompt will not usually improve by repeating the same request. Choose and validate retry limits and conditions for the pipeline rather than assuming every model call is safe to replay.
Rank #4
Make cache keys and invalidation match the task
The example article describes caching as a way to avoid repeating unchanged work—for example, if one document among three changes, cached results for the other two could be reused. This is an illustrative behavior, not a measured savings claim or a guarantee for every setup. Model output can depend on prompt and model configuration, service behavior, or external state, so include relevant inputs in cache identity and test invalidation for the task before relying on a hit.
Keep analyzer suggestions advisory
senro’s optional contrib/genkitanalyzer module can propose explanations for failed steps. It is separate from senro’s core orchestration dependency: the caller provides an already configured Genkit instance, including its chosen model, credentials, and telemetry setup. Treat its output as a proposal; applying a proposed change requires human acceptance or an explicit policy, not an assumption of automatic repair.
Operational checks before deployment
- Pin and verify the Genkit, senro, and provider versions you actually deploy; the example’s versions are a dated report, not a compatibility promise.
- Confirm current model access, regional availability, and provider requirements for the environment where the application will run.
- Store credentials outside source code and ensure the runtime can access them securely.
- Exercise the graph with missing inputs, a provider failure, a deterministic flow error, and a failure in the downstream combining step.
- Validate which errors are retryable and whether each step’s side effects permit replay.
- Test cache keys and invalidation when document content, prompt configuration, model selection, or relevant external state changes.
- Check the installed senro release documentation for supported platforms and runtime constraints rather than assuming every release has the same support matrix.
For project-level context, see the Genkit repository and Firebase’s Genkit overview. The overview page’s current status and update details should be checked directly when selecting a release or planning an operational deployment.
