To let Claude operate a browser, connect Playwright’s MCP server to an MCP client and give Claude a specific task to perform and verify. To have Claude Code plan, generate, and repair Playwright tests, use Playwright Test Agents instead. These are related but distinct workflows: MCP exposes browser controls, while Test Agents support a coding-agent test cycle.
Choose the Playwright workflow that matches the job
| Workflow | Best fit | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright MCP | Claude needs to browse, inspect, and interact with a site. | Claude calls structured MCP tools and uses page snapshots containing accessible roles, labels, and text to identify controls. |
| Playwright Test Agents | Claude Code needs to create or maintain a Playwright test suite. | Planner, generator, and healer agents explore an app, turn a plan into test files, and help diagnose and repair failing tests. |
| Playwright CLI | Browser work is one part of a larger Claude Code coding task. | The coding agent uses shell commands and concise output; Playwright describes this route as having lower token overhead than MCP’s tool schemas and snapshots. This is Playwright’s stated comparison, not an independent benchmark. |
Use MCP when browser interaction is the central task. Consider CLI or Test Agents when the work belongs inside a codebase and the outcome is a test suite. Playwright’s comparison of MCP and CLI is at Playwright MCP vs CLI.

Set up Playwright MCP for Claude
Prerequisites
- Install Node.js 20 or newer.
- Use an MCP-compatible client. Playwright’s Claude Code example uses Claude Code’s MCP command.
- Allow the browser download on first use; Playwright’s installation guidance says the browser downloads automatically.
Check the current installation requirements in the Playwright MCP getting-started guide, since requirements and commands can change.
Recommended Free Tools
Register the server in Claude Code
- Open a terminal in the environment where Claude Code runs.
- Run
claude mcp add playwright npx @playwright/mcp@latest. - Start or reopen Claude Code as needed for the client to load the server.
- Ask Claude to navigate to a page and perform a low-risk action, then inspect the resulting page state.
The command asks Claude Code to launch the Playwright MCP package through npx. Playwright also documents the minimal client configuration as launching npx @playwright/mcp@latest; use the exact configuration format required by your MCP client. See the official installation instructions for configuration details and current options.

Give Claude a browser task it can verify
Playwright MCP provides structured actions for navigation, clicking, typing, form filling, keyboard and mouse input, dialogs, tabs, and screenshots. It can also support areas such as network monitoring and mocking and browser storage state. You do not need to expose every capability in your task: state the destination, allowed action, and visible outcome that would count as success.
For example, ask Claude to open a demonstration todo app, add one named item, and confirm that the item appears in the list. This follows the kind of concrete navigation-and-action task shown in Playwright’s walkthrough. The browser agent identifies elements through accessible information in page snapshots rather than relying only on guessed screen coordinates.
A useful instruction has four parts:
- Destination: identify the URL or app area to open.
- Allowed action: specify the fields or controls the agent may use.
- Boundary: prohibit unrelated changes, purchases, account actions, or submissions if they are not required.
- Verification: ask Claude to inspect the resulting interface and report what it observed, rather than merely saying it completed the task.
Anthropic’s Prompting best practices recommends clear, direct instructions and notes that UI verification tools—including browser automation MCP servers—can help Claude verify interface work. That guidance helps structure a task; it is not a guarantee of correctness.

Choose browser state deliberately
Playwright documents headed and headless operation, as well as persistent, isolated, and extension-attached profiles. A persistent profile can retain cookies and login state; an isolated profile starts fresh. That difference affects both repeatability and the sensitivity of the session available to the agent.
- Use an isolated profile when you want a clean, repeatable run that should not inherit a personal login.
- Use a persistent profile only when the task genuinely needs an authenticated session, and treat its cookies and account access as credentials.
- Choose headed or headless operation according to whether you need to observe the browser window or run without a visible window; follow the MCP documentation for the relevant mode and profile settings.
Limit credentials and account permissions to what the task requires. For actions that are difficult to reverse—such as sending messages, changing settings, or submitting transactions—use narrow instructions and an explicit confirmation boundary. Anthropic’s prompting guidance supports balancing autonomy with safety, but does not certify any particular browser setup.
Use Playwright Test Agents for test creation and repair
Playwright’s Test Agents are not a substitute name for general browser-control MCP tools. They organize a test-development workflow around three roles:
Rank #3
- Planner: explores the app and creates a Markdown test plan.
- Generator: turns a plan into Playwright test files.
- Healer: replays failures, inspects the UI, suggests a patch, and reruns until tests pass or guardrails stop the loop.
In Claude Code, initialize the definitions with:
npx playwright init-agents --loop=claude
Playwright says to regenerate the agent definitions when you update Playwright so they receive the newer tools and instructions. Use this route when the deliverable is a test plan or maintained test suite; use Playwright MCP when Claude’s main job is to operate a browser conversationally. See Playwright Test Agents for the documented workflow.

Understand the arbitrary-code trust boundary
Ordinary structured browser actions are different from Playwright MCP’s separately documented browser_run_code_unsafe capability. Playwright warns that this tool runs arbitrary JavaScript in the Playwright server process and is RCE-equivalent, and says to enable it only for trusted MCP clients. Do not enable it merely because a browser agent needs to click, fill, or inspect pages. If your use case truly requires arbitrary code, treat the MCP client and server process as privileged execution environments and restrict who can connect.
Read Playwright’s warning and configuration guidance in Playwright MCP documentation before enabling the capability.
Run a browser remotely when local execution is not suitable
Playwright documents attaching to an existing browser through a Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) endpoint, including endpoints supplied by cloud browser services. This is an extension of the same browser automation workflow; it does not by itself establish which provider, region, latency, or price will fit your application. Follow the selected service’s connection instructions and Playwright’s CDP connection documentation.

If your goal is a screenshot rather than an agent that clicks through a site, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its API returns an image or PDF from one GET request; it does not replace Playwright MCP for general browser interaction. The call below saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- Claude does not show Playwright tools: confirm the MCP server was added to the Claude Code environment you are actually using, then restart or reopen the client so it reloads the configuration. Check the current command and setup format in the Playwright setup guide.
- The server will not start: verify that Node.js is version 20 or newer and that
npxcan run in the same environment as the MCP client. - The first browser action takes time or fails to launch: Playwright’s setup guidance says the browser downloads automatically on first use; check that the environment can complete that download.
- The page is logged out or has unexpected state: check whether the selected profile is isolated or persistent. An isolated session begins fresh; a persistent one may contain retained cookies and login state.
- Claude targets the wrong control or cannot confirm the result: make the task more specific, use the control’s visible label or role where appropriate, and request a fresh inspection of the page after the action.
- A Test Agent does not reflect an updated Playwright setup: regenerate the definitions after updating Playwright, as the Test Agents documentation recommends.
- You are considering enabling
browser_run_code_unsafeto fix ordinary interactions: do not use arbitrary JavaScript as a routine workaround; Playwright marks it RCE-equivalent and restricts it to trusted MCP clients.
