What a conduit is and what “powered” means
A conduit is a craftable underwater utility block whose operation depends on both water and a specific three-dimensional frame. Placing the block by itself does nothing: the surrounding 3×3×3 water volume and the prismarine-family frame must satisfy the activation rules at the same time.

The frame controls two practical characteristics. First, it determines the radius of the conduit’s spherical working area. Second, only the complete frame unlocks the hostile-mob damage effect. You can therefore build a small, economical starter frame for a local project or invest in the full structure when you need the longest reach and the defensive effect.

Only full blocks of the four listed types count toward the frame. Slabs, stairs, and walls made from related materials do not count as qualifying frame blocks, so they cannot substitute for a full block in the activation positions.

Where to obtain the ingredients
- The Heart of the Sea comes from buried treasure.
- Nautilus shells can be obtained from drowned, wandering traders, or fishing treasure.
- Ocean monuments and ocean ruins are important sources of prismarine and related blocks. A 16-block starter frame can be assembled from the upper portion of an ocean monument, which can reduce the amount of material you must mine separately.
Because the recipe consumes a single Heart of the Sea and eight shells, gather those rare items before spending time on the frame. Prismarine-family blocks are the renewable part of the project once you have access to monument or ruin materials.
Craft the conduit
- Open a crafting table.
- Put the Heart of the Sea in the center slot.
- Place one nautilus shell in each of the eight surrounding slots.
- Move the resulting conduit to your inventory.
The recipe has no alternate pattern: one Heart of the Sea must be surrounded by all eight nautilus shells. Crafting the block does not activate it; activation happens only after you place it in the prepared water and frame.
Choose a location and prepare the water
A conduit can activate in any biome and at any height or depth when its mechanical requirements are met. You do not need a particular ocean biome, altitude, or naturally generated structure. This lets you build in an ocean base, an underground reservoir, a river project, or a fully player-made chamber.
Make the 3×3×3 water volume
Reserve a cube three blocks wide, three blocks tall, and three blocks deep. The conduit occupies the center position. Every surrounding position in that volume must be filled in a way the game recognizes as water. The mechanics reference permits water source blocks, flowing water, and permitted waterlogged blocks, so you can either flood the cavity directly or incorporate waterlogged construction blocks where appropriate.
Do not confuse the 3×3×3 requirement with a three-block-deep hole. The conduit needs a complete volume around its center, not just water beneath or beside it. If even one required surrounding position is dry, the frame can appear correct while the conduit remains inactive.

Place the conduit at the center
Put the conduit in the middle of the prepared cube, leaving its surrounding positions available for water and the frame. The frame can be built around that center at the conduit’s level and through the two perpendicular planes described below. You can construct the frame first and insert the conduit last, or place the conduit before finishing the rings; the final state is what matters.

Build the activation frame
The basic frame is a 5×5 open square around the conduit. “Open” means the center remains available for the conduit and water rather than being filled with a solid 5×5 wall. Use only prismarine, dark prismarine, prismarine bricks, or sea lanterns, and make sure every frame position contains a full block.
Minimum starter frame
A single 5×5 ring has 16 perimeter positions. Filling those qualifying positions creates the activation minimum and gives the conduit a 32-block spherical range. This is the quickest useful build when you are testing the mechanic or protecting a compact work area.
Full three-ring frame
For maximum performance, add two more 5×5 rings perpendicular to the first. The three rings intersect around the conduit, so the finished structure contains 42 qualifying blocks rather than 48 separate blocks. Complete all three rings with full qualifying blocks to reach the 96-block range and enable hostile-mob damage within 8 blocks under the required wet conditions.
Keep the conduit’s center and the surrounding water volume clear while adding the rings. The frame is a three-dimensional cross-like structure, not a solid cube. A visually impressive solid wall can still fail if it leaves the required water positions dry or uses non-qualifying block shapes in the actual frame positions.

Range tiers and frame choices
The conduit’s radius is spherical, measured from the conduit rather than from the outer edge of the frame. The documented tiers are:

The intermediate tiers are reached by adding valid frame blocks; the cited mechanics reference establishes the tier values but does not specify a separate block-count threshold for each intermediate step. If you need a guaranteed maximum, build all three rings and verify that all 42 positions contain qualifying full blocks.
When a starter ring is enough
- Use 16 blocks when the conduit serves a small dock, entrance, or compact underwater room.
- Use an expanded frame when the construction area is larger but you do not yet have enough prismarine for all three rings.
- Use all 42 blocks when the conduit must cover a broad base or when the hostile-mob damage effect is part of the design.
Complete build procedure
- Collect the rare ingredients. Obtain one Heart of the Sea and eight nautilus shells, then craft the conduit.
- Select the site. Choose any biome and any height or depth; no special world location is required.
- Mark the center. Decide exactly where the conduit will sit and reserve the surrounding 3×3×3 volume.
- Fill the water volume. Ensure every required position around the center contains water source, flowing water, or an allowed waterlogged block.
- Build the first ring. Make a 5×5 open square through the conduit’s center using 16 full blocks from the four qualifying material types.
- Insert or inspect the conduit. Place it in the center of the water-filled volume if it is not already there.
- Test activation. With the water and 16-block ring complete, the conduit should activate and provide the 32-block tier.
- Extend the frame if needed. Add the two perpendicular 5×5 rings, keeping their positions filled only with qualifying full blocks.
- Verify the complete build. Count 42 qualifying blocks for the 96-block tier and the conditional hostile-mob damage effect.
Why a conduit may not activate
The water cube is incomplete
Check all 26 positions surrounding the conduit, not just the blocks directly above, below, and beside it. A dry corner or an unwaterlogged construction block can break the required 3×3×3 volume. Replace the missing water, or waterlog the applicable block, and test again.
The frame has fewer than 16 qualifying blocks
Count the actual full blocks occupying frame positions. Decorative blocks nearby do not count, and a visually continuous shape can still be below the 16-block minimum. Add qualifying blocks until the starter ring contains 16.
Non-qualifying shapes were used
Slabs, stairs, and walls are common causes of failure because they look like prismarine construction but do not count for activation. Replace each one in a frame position with a full prismarine, dark prismarine, prismarine-brick, or sea-lantern block.

The frame material is wrong
Check the block identity, not merely its color. The activation list is limited to prismarine, dark prismarine, prismarine bricks, and sea lanterns. Other ocean-themed blocks cannot be counted unless they are one of those four types.
The rings are misplaced
The structure must be centered on the conduit. Recheck the 5×5 geometry and make sure the additional rings pass through the same center in perpendicular planes. A ring shifted by one block may leave the expected frame positions empty.
You expected the full range from a partial frame
Activation and maximum range are different goals. Sixteen blocks starts the 32-block tier; the 96-block tier requires all 42 qualifying blocks. Add valid blocks and complete the two perpendicular rings when you need the maximum reach.
You expected mob damage from an incomplete frame
The hostile-mob damage effect belongs to the complete 42-block frame, not merely to an activated starter ring. Even with the complete frame, a target must be within 8 blocks and in contact with water or rain for the condition to apply.
You searched for a special biome or altitude
Biome and height are not activation prerequisites. If the conduit is inactive, return to the water-volume, block-count, block-type, and frame-centering checks instead of relocating the build.
Understanding the complete-frame damage effect
A fully framed conduit can damage hostile mobs within 8 blocks, but the effect is conditional. The mob must also be in contact with water or rain. The range of the conduit’s general operation can be 96 blocks while the damage radius remains the separate 8-block condition, so do not use the larger range as a promise that every hostile mob in the sphere will be harmed.

Build-planning examples
Compact underwater work area
For a small room or dock, use the 16-block starter ring. It is the least expensive activation build and provides a 32-block spherical radius. Leave room to expand the ring planes later if the base grows.
Growing ocean base
Begin with the starter ring, then add valid blocks as prismarine becomes available. The documented range tiers progress through 48, 64, and 80 blocks before the 96-block maximum. Build each addition around the same conduit center so that expansion does not require moving the powered block.
Maximum coverage and wet defense
Reserve enough material for all three perpendicular rings and verify the 42-block total. This is the only frame size in the documented mechanics that reaches 96 blocks and supplies the conditional hostile-mob damage effect.

- One conduit was crafted from one Heart of the Sea and eight nautilus shells.
- The conduit is centered in a complete water-filled 3×3×3 volume.
- The frame uses only prismarine, dark prismarine, prismarine bricks, or sea lanterns.
- Every counted frame position contains a full block rather than a slab, stair, or wall.
- At least 16 qualifying blocks are present for activation.
- The first ring is a centered 5×5 open square.
- Two perpendicular rings are added when the 96-block tier or mob-damage effect is required.
- The complete frame contains 42 qualifying blocks.
- For hostile-mob damage, the target is within 8 blocks and touching water or rain.
Once these checks pass, the conduit’s behavior is determined by the frame tier you built: 32 blocks at the activation minimum, progressively larger documented tiers as valid blocks are added, and 96 blocks with the complete 42-block structure.
