For a logical backup of one MySQL database, run mysqldump -u USER -p DATABASE > backup.sql. For an online backup of a database made mostly of InnoDB tables, use mysqldump -u USER -p --single-transaction --quick DATABASE > backup.sql. The second form reads a consistent transactional snapshot without blocking normal application traffic, while also avoiding the high memory use of buffering an entire table.

mysqldump creates a logical SQL export. The file contains SQL statements that can recreate database objects and insert table rows when they are executed by the mysql client. It is portable and easy to inspect, but a restore must rebuild the schema and reload the rows, so recovery time grows with database size.
A logical dump is not the same as a byte-for-byte copy of the data directory. It does not by itself provide a point-in-time recovery chain, a retention policy, encryption, off-site storage, or proof that a restore will succeed. Those are operational decisions you must define for your deployment.

Choose the command for your database
| Situation | Command shape | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| One database, simplest export | mysqldump -u USER -p DATABASE > backup.sql |
Uses the account’s normal locking behavior and privileges. |
| Mostly InnoDB tables while applications stay online | mysqldump -u USER -p --single-transaction --quick DATABASE > backup.sql |
Consistent for transactional InnoDB tables; it does not provide the same guarantee for MyISAM or MEMORY tables. |
| Several named databases | mysqldump -u USER -p --databases db1 db2 > backup.sql |
The file includes CREATE DATABASE and USE statements for each named database. |
| Application database with stored code and scheduled events | mysqldump -u USER -p --single-transaction --quick --routines --events --triggers DATABASE > backup.sql |
Triggers are included by default; the explicit option documents your intent. |
| Every database on the server | mysqldump -u USER -p --all-databases --routines --events > all.sql |
With MySQL 8.4, include routines and events explicitly when using --all-databases. |
Prepare the account and destination
Run the command from a host that can reach the MySQL server and has permission to create or overwrite the destination file. Replace USER, DATABASE, and the file name with values for your environment. The -p option prompts for the password rather than putting it in the command line.
Plan the dump account before scheduling it. The exact requirements depend on the objects and options being exported:
| Requirement | Why it may be needed |
|---|---|
SELECT |
Reads rows from the tables being dumped. |
SHOW VIEW |
Allows view definitions to be read. |
TRIGGER |
Allows trigger definitions to be read. |
LOCK TABLES |
Generally needed when --single-transaction is not used and the dump locks tables. |
PROCESS, RELOAD, or FLUSH_TABLES |
May be required by particular tablespace and GTID-related settings. |
Grant access to every database and object that the command will read. A dump can complete for some objects while omitting others if the account lacks the corresponding privilege, so review the account deliberately instead of assuming that a successful connection means a complete backup.
Back up one database
Basic logical dump
Use this form when you need a straightforward export and the server’s normal locking behavior is acceptable:
mysqldump -u USER -p DATABASE > backup.sql
The shell’s > operator writes the command’s output to backup.sql. Make sure the destination directory is writable and that replacing an existing file is intentional. If the database does not exist in the target server during recovery, create it first unless the dump was made with --databases.
Online dump for InnoDB
For a production workload composed primarily of InnoDB tables, use:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutemysqldump -u USER -p --single-transaction --quick DATABASE > backup.sql
--single-transaction starts a transaction at REPEATABLE READ. For transactional tables such as InnoDB, the dump then reads a consistent state as of the transaction start without blocking applications. The MySQL 8.4 Reference Manual describes this option as useful “only with transactional tables such as InnoDB,” because its consistency guarantee depends on the storage engine.

--quick retrieves rows a table at a time instead of buffering a complete table before writing it. It is recommended with --single-transaction for large tables, where reducing client memory use matters.
Understand consistency and locking
What the transaction snapshot protects
Concurrent inserts and updates to InnoDB tables can continue while the dump reads its repeatable-read snapshot. The resulting rows represent a consistent view for those transactional tables at the point the transaction began, rather than a mixture of independently timed reads.
Storage engines that need extra care
--single-transaction does not guarantee the same consistency for MyISAM or MEMORY tables. If a database mixes engines, the InnoDB portion can be transactionally consistent while nontransactional tables may change during the export. Identify those tables before treating the file as one perfectly synchronized image.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →DDL to avoid during the dump
While a --single-transaction dump is running, avoid these statements on dumped tables:
ALTER TABLECREATE TABLEDROP TABLERENAME TABLETRUNCATE TABLE
The MySQL manual warns that these operations can make the consistent read incorrect or cause it to fail. Schedule schema changes outside the dump window, or use a backup approach designed for the required concurrency and engine mix.
Include every object you need
Triggers
Triggers are included by default. Use --skip-triggers only when you intentionally want a data-and-table export without trigger definitions. Omitting them can change application behavior after restoration, so record that choice in the backup procedure.
Stored procedures and functions
Add --routines to include stored procedures and stored functions:

mysqldump -u USER -p --routines DATABASE > backup.sql
Event Scheduler events
Add --events to include Event Scheduler event definitions:
mysqldump -u USER -p --events DATABASE > backup.sql
Comprehensive application dump
For an online InnoDB-oriented application database whose stored code and scheduled events matter, combine the options:
mysqldump -u USER -p --single-transaction --quick --routines --events --triggers DATABASE > backup.sql
The explicit --triggers makes the intended object set obvious even though triggers are on by default. Review whether views, routines, events, and triggers refer to accounts, schemas, or external services that also need to exist in the recovery environment.
Back up several databases
Named databases
Use --databases, also written as -B, when exporting more than one named database:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
mysqldump -u USER -p --databases db1 db2 > backup.sql
This form writes CREATE DATABASE and USE statements before each database. During recovery, those statements can create and select the target databases, subject to the privileges of the account performing the reload.
You can combine this mode with the online and object options:
mysqldump -u USER -p --single-transaction --quick --routines --events --databases db1 db2 > backup.sql
All databases
For a server-wide logical export, use --all-databases. With MySQL 8.4, explicitly add --routines --events when those definitions must be retained:

mysqldump -u USER -p --all-databases --routines --events > all.sql
Older MySQL releases handled some system definitions differently. Do not assume that a command written for an older release captures every non-table object under MySQL 8.4; state the options explicitly and verify the result.
Restore a mysqldump file
Restore into an existing database
If the dump was created for one database without --databases, create the destination database first, then stream the file into the mysql client:
mysql -u USER -p db_name < backup.sql
The account used for the reload needs privileges to execute the statements contained in the file. That can include permissions to create tables, views, triggers, routines, and events, not merely permission to insert rows.
Restore a dump made with --databases
A file made with --databases contains its own CREATE DATABASE and USE statements. You can reload it without supplying a default database:
mysql -u USER -p < backup.sql
The embedded statements select each database in turn. The restore account must be allowed to execute those statements and create the requested objects.
Restore into a separate test instance
Use a disposable or isolated MySQL instance when validating a backup. Confirm that the server version, required accounts, and expected database names are available, then run the appropriate restore command. Check that tables, views, triggers, routines, and events are present and that representative application queries work. A command that produced a file is not proof that the file can recover a usable service.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify that the backup is usable
Verification should test recovery, not just file creation. Use a repeatable checklist:
Best Value
- Record which command, MySQL version, databases, and object options produced the file.
- Check that the output file exists at the intended destination and has a plausible size for the data set.
- Reload the file into an isolated server with an account that has the required privileges.
- Confirm expected table counts and inspect representative rows.
- Confirm that views, triggers, stored procedures, functions, and events required by the application were restored.
- Run application-level checks, such as a read query and a write in a test environment, before declaring the restore successful.
- Measure the reload duration and compare it with the recovery time your service requires.
Keep the restore procedure alongside the backup schedule. If the test reveals missing privileges or objects, correct the command or account before relying on the next scheduled file.
Operational cautions for scheduled dumps
Coordinate with schema changes
Place online dumps in a maintenance plan that prevents conflicting DDL on dumped tables. The snapshot itself reduces application blocking for InnoDB, but it does not make every schema operation safe to run concurrently.
Protect credentials and files
Use an account limited to the databases and objects it must back up, and restrict access to the resulting SQL file because it contains the database contents in logical form. The official references do not prescribe a universal encryption method, retention period, off-site-storage rule, or restore-test schedule. Set those policies according to your deployment’s risk, regulatory requirements, and recovery objectives.
Document option changes
Record whether triggers were left enabled, whether routines and events were included, which storage engines were present, and whether the dump used --single-transaction. A later operator should be able to select the matching restore procedure without guessing what the file contains.
Troubleshoot common failures
Access-denied errors
Check the dump account’s SELECT, SHOW VIEW, and TRIGGER privileges, then add object-specific rights required by the command. If the dump does not use --single-transaction, verify whether LOCK TABLES is required. Tablespace or GTID-related settings may require PROCESS, RELOAD, or FLUSH_TABLES.
Missing routines or events
Re-run the export with --routines --events. This is especially important for MySQL 8.4 combined with --all-databases, where those definitions should be requested explicitly.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Inconsistent or failed online dump
Determine whether the affected tables use MyISAM or MEMORY, and look for concurrent ALTER TABLE, DROP TABLE, RENAME TABLE, CREATE TABLE, or TRUNCATE TABLE operations. Move those changes outside the dump window and reassess whether a transactional snapshot is appropriate for the mixed-engine workload.
Restore stops on object creation
Read the first failing statement and grant the restore account the privilege it requires. When using a dump made with --databases, also verify that the account can create and select the embedded database names.
When mysqldump is not the right backup method
mysqldump is a logical export, so restoration must execute SQL to recreate definitions and reload rows. For very large databases, or environments where a restore already takes hours, the MySQL manual points toward a physical alternative such as MySQL Enterprise Backup. The choice should be based on measured recovery needs rather than on dump-file size alone.
| Decision axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Restore-time target | Can a logical SQL reload finish within the required recovery time? |
| Consistency across engines | Are all important tables transactional InnoDB, or do MyISAM and MEMORY tables require another approach? |
| Production impact | Can the workload tolerate the chosen locking and the restrictions on concurrent DDL? |
| Portability | Do you need a SQL representation that can be moved between compatible server environments? |
| Point-in-time recovery | Does the deployment require recovery to an arbitrary time rather than to the moment of one dump? |
| Operational cost | Can the team run, secure, monitor, and regularly test the selected backup system? |
If the answer to the restore-time question is no, keep mysqldump for portability or logical migrations if useful, but adopt a physical strategy that meets the recovery objective.
