To build a flagpole in DayZ, craft a Flag Pole Kit from three short wooden sticks and one rope, place the kit, reinforce its base, add the logs, stones, wire and nails, raise the pole, and attach a flag found in the world. A raised flagpole is reported to protect storage containers within roughly 60 metres from item despawn. The exact material totals and flag-lowering interval vary between community guides, so gather extra supplies and verify the current requirements in your game version.

What the DayZ flagpole does
The flagpole is a persistent base-building object rather than a craftable flag. You construct the pole from several stages, then attach a Flag that you have found while exploring. Once the flag is raised, the pole marks an area in which qualifying stored items are protected from normal cleanup. Community sources consistently report a radius of about 60 metres, although the value may change in a future update.

The protection is not a blanket guarantee for every object on the ground. The safest interpretation of the available guidance is that items inside storage containers within the radius are covered. Loose objects can still disappear; a player report described unsecured items despawning after approximately eight hours even near a pole. Put valuable equipment in crates, barrels, tents or other supported containers instead of leaving it on the floor.
Bohemia Interactive introduced the Flag Pole and flags in the PC Experimental 1.09 update in August 2020. Console and community-server behaviour can differ when server owners alter persistence or cleanup settings.

Materials and tools to gather first
Published community guides do not agree on a single bill of materials. One commonly repeated list calls for the following approximate totals:

The nail count is the largest disagreement: one guide lists 60, while another says roughly 32 is enough. Treat every figure as a planning estimate, not a guaranteed current recipe. Carry spare nails, rope, logs and stones so a changed recipe or failed action does not leave the build incomplete.

Guides variously specify a shovel or pickaxe for the foundation, a hammer or hatchet for assembling the pole, and two sledgehammers for preparing stone. The overlap is more useful than any one list: bring a shovel or pickaxe, a hammer or hatchet, and at least one sledgehammer; two sledgehammers are prudent if you are travelling far from a repair source. Tool condition matters, so avoid starting with badly damaged equipment.

Finding the flag
The flag itself is not made from the pole materials. Search the world for a Flag and keep it in your inventory until the structure is complete. Because the pole cannot provide its protection until a flag is attached and raised, choose a building site only after you have a realistic way to transport the flag and construction supplies there.
How to build a flagpole step by step

Craft the Flag Pole Kit
Combine three short wooden sticks with one rope in your inventory. The result is a Flag Pole Kit. If the recipe does not appear, confirm that the sticks are the short-stick items rather than long wooden pieces and that the rope is intact.

Choose and deploy the foundation
Place the kit on level ground with enough clearance for the finished pole, nearby storage and player movement. Avoid doorways, narrow interiors and terrain that causes the placement preview to intersect a wall, rock or another base object. Deploy the kit when the preview is aligned where you want the pole to stand; relocating it later is not a simple drag-and-drop operation.

Finish the base frame
Interact with the deployed frame and use the shovel or pickaxe option shown by your current game version. Community instructions differ on the exact tool, so follow the action prompt rather than forcing a particular implement. Complete the foundation before attempting to add upper sections.

Add the support logs
Attach the required logs to the base. The support pieces make the structure stable and unlock the next construction stage. If a log will not attach, check that it is in the correct inventory slot, that the foundation stage is complete and that you are targeting the attachment point rather than the ground beside it.

Prepare and add large stones
Collect boulders and break them into large stones with a pickaxe or sledgehammer. Bring the resulting stones back to the pole and add them when the support stage requests them. Stones are heavy and can require multiple trips; stage them near the build without blocking the interaction area.

Install the remaining construction parts
Add the remaining logs, metal wire, rope and nails as the interaction menu requests them. Because recipes and quantities differ among guides, use the on-screen requirement list as the authoritative check for your server. Keep all materials close but do not drop valuable items loose for long periods.

Build and raise the pole
Use a hammer or hatchet to complete the assembly. The completed object is not providing its full benefit until a flag is attached and raised. If the build action stops, repair or replace the tool and inspect the structure for a missing nail, log, wire or rope.

Attach and raise a found flag
With the finished pole selected, attach the Flag from your inventory. Use the raise or hoist interaction shown by the game. Confirm visually that the flag is up; a flag left lowered, removed or stolen should not be treated as active protection.
How to place the pole for useful coverage
Plan the centre of the protected area
The reported protection radius is approximately 60 metres from the pole. Place the pole near the centre of your storage area rather than at the edge of a compound. A central position gives you more room for containers and reduces the chance that part of the base falls outside the circle.
Measure conservatively
Do not rely on a precise 60-metre boundary for high-value storage. The number comes from community references and a secondhand quotation attributed to a developer discussion, not a current official specification. Keep important containers comfortably inside the estimated circle and treat anything near the perimeter as potentially unprotected.
Account for terrain and access
- Use stable, reasonably level ground so the kit can deploy and the interaction points remain reachable.
- Leave walking space around the base; walls, vehicles and stacked objects can make later maintenance difficult.
- Keep containers under cover where practical. The pole protects qualifying contents by its radius, but it does not make an exposed base safe from players, raids or weather.
- Remember that the pole does not stop another player from opening, destroying or stealing a container.
What the 60-metre protection covers
Community documentation describes the pole as preventing normal despawn for stored items within about 60 metres. The important qualification is “stored”: the DayZ Wiki’s Flag Pole material says items inside storage containers are the objects covered by the mechanic. A separate 2022 player account reported loose items disappearing after around eight hours, so use containers as the safe baseline.

Flag upkeep and conflicting timers
The flag is not permanently raised. The DayZ Wiki describes a gradual lowering over approximately 45 days, while another guide gives 49 days. A 2021 player comment claimed a five-day reset cycle, and another guide warned that a stolen flag cancels protection until it is raised again. These figures conflict and are not backed by a current official timer.
Use a conservative maintenance routine: inspect the pole regularly, especially after a server restart or a visit from other players; raise the flag whenever the interaction is available; and do not assume a 45- or 49-day interval is guaranteed on your server. If the flag is missing, lowered or stolen, treat the protection as inactive until you replace or re-hoist it.
Troubleshooting a failed build

A practical preparation checklist
- Three short wooden sticks and at least one rope for the kit.
- Extra rope, logs, nails and metal wire beyond the guide’s minimum.
- Large stones prepared from boulders, with more than the stated 32 if possible.
- A shovel or pickaxe, a hammer or hatchet, and preferably two sledgehammers.
- A found Flag ready to attach after the structure is finished.
- A level, central site with room for containers and maintenance access.
- Crates, barrels, tents or other containers for items you want protected.
- A recurring inspection schedule because published lowering timers disagree.
Bottom line for current servers
Build the pole in stages, attach a found flag and keep the flag raised. Plan around a roughly 60-metre radius, put valuable items inside containers well within that radius, and gather more than the often-quoted material totals. Since current official confirmation of the exact counts, radius and lowering interval is unavailable, the interaction prompts and your server’s settings are the final authority.
