Put the Fire Pit and cooking stations in a central survival zone, group science and storage nearby, and reserve separate space for farms, animals and future expansion. A border site is not automatically best for every character or server: your choice should balance travel time, seasonal hazards, nearby set pieces, available building space and how much risk your group accepts.

What makes a good DST base location?
There is no universally perfect tile for a permanent base. A solo Wilson run, a cave-focused world, a nomadic character and a large multiplayer server have different priorities. Evaluate each candidate against the same five questions before placing an Alchemy Engine:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- How many biomes are close? A location within walking distance of three or four biomes reduces long supply trips. Border areas generally score highest.
- Which set pieces are nearby? The Pig King, wormholes, cave entrances, Oasis Desert, Beefalo and roads can save time or solve specific survival problems.
- Is there enough flat, open ground? Count space for every structure you expect to build, not only the first Crock Pot and chest. Trees, ponds, boulders and reeds can make a visually convenient area unusable.
- How does the site behave in each season? Check summer fire exposure, winter travel and cold management, spring rain, and whether seasonal events or hostile creatures can reach the camp.
- How much danger can your group handle? A central location may be efficient but busier and more exposed. A remote base may be peaceful but costly to resupply.
Walk the surrounding area and mark resource routes before committing. A good site is one that remains convenient after the early-game materials immediately around it are gone.
Best general-purpose choice: a grassland or forest border
The most consistently recommended arrangement is a border between biomes, especially grassland beside forest. From that edge, you can reach multiple resource types without crossing an entire biome every time you need grass, logs, berries or flint. Open grassland also gives you the clear footprint needed for a tidy layout, while the forest side keeps a major source of logs close.

Do not build directly on the boundary if the ground is cramped or interrupted. Walk a little into the open area and leave a buffer between your structures and the forest. That buffer gives you room to expand and makes it easier to manage tree growth, fire spread and hostile spawns.
For new players, this option is forgiving because it does not depend on one rare landmark. For experienced players, it is a flexible hub from which to reach caves, the Pig King, set-piece areas and seasonal resources.

How the main location options compare
| Location | Main advantages | Risks or costs | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grassland/forest border | Open building area; short routes to several biomes; easy access to grass and logs | May be exposed to roaming threats; the exact border can be cramped | Default permanent base, especially for new players |
| Near the Pig King | Convenient gold exchange and a recognizable navigation landmark; often central enough for early exploration | Nearby terrain may be uneven or crowded; the Pig King area is not itself a complete resource base | Early-game hub or a permanent base when the surrounding map is favorable |
| Near wormholes | Fast travel between distant resource regions | Wormhole destinations can be dangerous, and the entrance area may not have enough usable space | Experienced groups that understand both ends of the route |
| Near a cave entrance | Quick access to the caves and a clear landmark; one community account describes daylight reaching through the ceiling in a cave-entrance setup, allowing farming, including bees | Lower-confidence cave-light behavior should be tested on your current version; surface access and seasonal safety still matter | Cave-oriented servers or a two-base strategy |
| Oasis Desert | Common summer base choice because the Oasis provides natural protection from summer burning | Desert travel and local resources may be inconvenient outside summer; space and nearby landmarks vary by world | Seasonal summer camp or a permanent base for players prepared to travel farther |
| Near Beefalo | Early access to manure and a useful source of food or protection depending on your plan | Beefalo behavior changes with season; keep buildings and player traffic far enough away to avoid unwanted aggression | Early-game convenience and farm-focused layouts |
These are strategic trade-offs, not a statistical ranking. No published base-building study establishes a single location as objectively safest or fastest.
When the Pig King, wormholes or caves are worth choosing
Building near the Pig King
The Pig King is a strong neighbor when your world has a broad, flat clearing nearby. Its value is practical rather than defensive: it is easy to find, useful for gold-related exchanges, and often positioned close enough to multiple early resources. Leave room between the royal area and your structures so you do not turn every visit into a collision with walls, trees or pig houses.
Before settling, walk outward in several directions. If one side immediately becomes dense forest, swamp or a dead-end coast, the landmark may be better as a waypoint than as your permanent center.
Using a wormhole as a travel hub
A wormhole is valuable when its other end connects two otherwise distant resource zones. Check both entrances, the destination terrain and the return route at night. A base beside one entrance is only efficient if the entrance remains safe to use and the surrounding ground can hold your planned zones. Do not place your Fire Pit or storage where an ambush can trap you against the wormhole.
Recommended Free Tools
Choosing a cave entrance
A surface base beside a cave entrance can work for a group that spends much of its time underground. One community post also reports daylight passing through the ceiling in a cave-entrance arrangement, which allowed farming and bees; treat that as a version- and location-dependent observation, not a guaranteed mechanic. Test the exact entrance on your server before dedicating your permanent farms to it.
Keep a surface fallback for seasonal emergencies. A cave entrance does not remove the need to manage summer heat, winter cold or surface raids.

Why the Oasis is especially useful in summer
The Oasis Desert is a common summer destination because it offers natural protection from burning. That makes it attractive for a seasonal camp or for a permanent base when your group is comfortable with desert travel. The trade-off is logistics: the desert may be farther from forests, grasslands and other routine supplies, and the exact amount of flat building room depends on world generation.
If you use the Oasis only during summer, prepare a compact kit rather than rebuilding your entire settlement. Bring or pre-position a Fire Pit, food preservation, basic storage and the materials needed to repair or replace seasonal equipment. Mark the route from your main base and leave a safe return path before the season begins.
Places to avoid for the main base
Dense forest
A forest can look rich in resources while being terrible for construction. Trees consume the very space needed for Crock Pots, chests, farms and defensive paths. Clearing a large area also creates extra work and can leave flammable fuel too close to your structures. Use the forest for a managed tree farm beside the base, not as the default footprint for every zone.
Swamp
Swamps offer useful materials but poor living conditions. Tentacles, ponds and irregular ground make movement and expansion awkward, and fights can begin close to your storage. A swamp-edge outpost is reasonable; a main settlement in the middle of one is usually a high-risk choice.
Any cramped clearing
A clearing that fits your first night can fail once you add Ice Boxes, farms, animal pens, walls and seasonal equipment. Before placing a structure, mentally reserve lanes for players to walk through and a ring for future additions. If you cannot draw those lanes, keep scouting.
A practical base layout: separate zones around a survival core
Use the Fire Pit as the center of a survival zone. Put cooking and emergency supplies close enough that players can reach them quickly, then arrange production areas around that core. The point is not symmetry; it is predictable movement and enough empty ground to expand.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Center: Fire Pit and cooking
Place the Fire Pit in the most accessible central position. Cluster Crock Pots, Ice Boxes and Drying Racks nearby so a player can collect ingredients, cook and store food without crossing the entire base. A Bird Cage belongs in or beside this kitchen because it is part of the food-processing loop. One practical kitchen arrangement also places a Salt Box and several Ice Boxes around the Crock Pots, with food farms outside the cluster.
Keep a clear walking ring around the cooking area. Crowding every station against the Fire Pit makes emergency lighting and multiplayer access worse, even when the structures technically fit.

Workshop: science and magic
Group the Alchemy Engine, Shadow Manipulator and Think Tank in one workshop zone, or in two clearly labeled central areas if your base is large. Put resource farms and Storage Chests close enough to support crafting, but do not scatter individual chests beside every machine. A predictable storage section makes it faster to find boards, cut grass, rocks, food and seasonal gear.
Storage: one organized section
Separate storage from the busiest cooking and combat paths. Arrange chests by category—building materials, tools, food ingredients, clothing, seasonal items and rare resources—and leave a spare row for new categories. The exact labels are less important than using the same locations every session.

Farms and animal pens
Reserve outer rings for farms, Beefalo-related facilities, pig houses, rabbits or other animal areas. Keep manure-producing animals and food farms close enough to service but far enough from the kitchen that traffic does not choke the center. Pig Houses can support a meat plan, while a Bird Cage supports egg production and food conversion.
Walls, gates and traps
Defenses should guide threats away from the survival core rather than consume all of your open space. One “Circle” style uses tooth traps at the entrance and stone walls around the remaining perimeter. You can add walls at corners or along roads for visual variety, but keep a clear gate and an escape route. A solid wall with no exit can turn a raid, hound attack or fire into a player trap.
Expansion areas
Mark future zones before you need them: a larger farm, animal pens, science machines, a dock if the map and your playstyle require one, and a seasonal camp. Empty ground is a resource. Do not fill every square with decorative flooring or walls during the first season.
Essential structures and a sensible build order
The following order gets a functional camp online without locking you into a cramped layout. Exact material availability depends on the character, world generation and server settings.
- Scout before committing. Identify a border site or another candidate with open ground, nearby resources and a safe route home. Do not spend your first gold and boards on a permanent footprint you have not inspected.
- Place the Fire Pit in the planned center. Build it where the survival zone will remain even after expansion.
- Build the Alchemy Engine. Keep it in the workshop area, with room for the Shadow Manipulator and Think Tank later.
- Add Crock Pots and an Ice Box. Put cooking, cold storage and future Drying Racks in one kitchen cluster. Add more Crock Pots only after leaving walking space.
- Build Storage Chests. Create a dedicated storage section instead of placing emergency chests randomly around the Fire Pit.
- Add a Lightning Rod early and centrally. The 2026 Steam guide specifically recommends building one in the center immediately. Its placement is most useful when it covers the structures you are actually protecting; add additional coverage for a very large or spread-out settlement.
- Prepare summer protection. Plan an Endothermic Fire Pit and an Ice Flingomatic before summer. Do not wait for the first fire to decide where they belong.
- Add food and production support. Place Bird Cages, Pig Houses, farms, Drying Racks and animal areas in their reserved outer zones.
- Finish defenses and travel infrastructure. Add walls, traps, gates and a dock or outpost only after the core remains easy to navigate.
The Fire Pit, Alchemy Engine, Crock Pots and Ice Box form the basic functional package. Storage Chests, Pig Houses and Bird Cages are the next practical additions for a self-sufficient settlement.
Fire, lightning and seasonal safety
Lightning coverage
Build the first Lightning Rod near the center rather than at the edge of the base. The recommendation is about protecting the settlement’s main structures early, when you have few resources and little room to recover from a strike. If your farms, animal pens or dock later extend beyond its coverage, treat those as separate risk zones and plan additional protection.

Summer fire control
Summer changes the value of a beautiful layout. Keep flammable farms, tree plantations and decorative structures away from the kitchen and Fire Pit, and reserve a location for an Ice Flingomatic. The Oasis can serve as a natural summer refuge, but a base outside the desert still needs its own fire plan.
Winter and night access
Leave direct paths between the Fire Pit, storage, kitchen and exit. A long maze of walls may look secure but increases the time spent exposed to cold or darkness. Keep winter clothing and emergency fuel in storage close to the center, not in a remote outbuilding.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDesigning for different playstyles
New or cautious players
Choose the open border site, keep the core compact, and delay elaborate walls until food, light and storage are reliable. The Pig King or Beefalo can be a useful nearby landmark, but do not sacrifice open ground merely to stand beside one.
Resource-focused groups
Favor a central border with short routes to forest, grassland, rocky ground and at least one travel shortcut. Put farms and processing around the kitchen, then create small outposts near distant resources rather than moving the entire base every time.
Cave-focused groups
Use a cave entrance only after checking the exact entrance’s surface space, daylight behavior and escape routes. Keep enough surface infrastructure to recover if cave travel becomes unsafe or inconvenient.
Large multiplayer servers
Make the central paths wider than a solo layout requires. Put shared storage and cooking where every player can reach them, and assign outer zones for personal farms, animal pens or specialty crafting. A labeled, separated storage section prevents several players from rebuilding the same station in different corners.
High-risk or challenge runs
A remote or seasonal location may be worthwhile if the group already knows the map and can replace lost equipment. For a new world, the border strategy remains the safer baseline because it limits long supply trips.
2026 structures, updates and version cautions
Update 1.25.0, discussed in a January 2026 Klei forum post, added structures that can be crafted for Pearl after specified conditions: the Tea Shop, Hot Spring, Large Drying Rack, Light Post and Combriner. Several Salt Crystal items are crafted at the Combriner. These additions can affect a late-game decorative or production wing, but they should not displace the early Fire Pit, cooking, storage and lightning plan.

The community Don’t Starve Wiki’s 2026 version history records a June 25 fix for Golf structure rotations and a July 2 fix involving coals and Mini-Golf over Docks. Those entries are community-maintained and matter mainly if your layout uses those structures. A Playdigious help-center excerpt lists mobile patch notes through version 2.2.0 dated October 6, 2026, but the excerpt does not identify base-structure changes; check the live notes for your platform before relying on mobile-specific behavior.
The Wiki’s From Beyond page lists the Perennial Altar, Shallow Grave and Portable Campfire, and mentions a Settings option to align building to a grid. The page does not establish when that grid option shipped, so treat its availability as version-dependent rather than guaranteed on every server.
Older layout and location guides date from roughly 2014 and 2019, while a commonly cited forum tips thread is from about 2021. A guide updated in November 2025 and a 2026 Steam guide are newer, but map generation and structure behavior can still change. Verify the current patch notes and test unusual cave, dock or grid interactions in a disposable world before rebuilding a mature base.
Common layout problems and fixes
“My first base is too small.”
Stop adding decorative objects and identify the three areas that must remain accessible: the Fire Pit and kitchen, the workshop and storage. Move farms or animal pens outward first. If the center cannot be opened without destroying core stations, create a nearby satellite zone and use the original area as an outpost rather than forcing a total rebuild.
“Players keep getting stuck behind walls.”
Remove dead-end corridors, widen the main ring and add a second exit. Traps belong at controlled entrances, not in every walking lane. Test the route at night and while carrying a full inventory; a path that works empty may fail during an emergency.
“The base burns despite preparation.”
Check whether farms, trees or outer structures sit outside Ice Flingomatic coverage. Move the most flammable cluster closer, add coverage for the expansion wing, and keep emergency materials in storage away from the fire-risk zone. A Lightning Rod addresses lightning; it does not replace summer fire planning.

Reassess the site’s biome coverage rather than adding more stations. A border location, a safe wormhole route or a small resource outpost may solve the problem more efficiently than enlarging the main base. If the chosen landmark is dangerous, keep the base at a walkable distance instead of placing it directly on top of the entrance.
“The base looks organized but production is slow.”
Shorten the loop between ingredients, Crock Pots, Ice Boxes, Drying Racks and the Bird Cage. Keep high-frequency materials in the nearest storage row and move rarely used items to the back. Organization should reduce steps, not merely create visual symmetry.

- Can you walk to at least three or four useful biomes without a major detour?
- Is the buildable ground genuinely flat and open, with room for expansion?
- Have you checked both ends of any wormhole and the safety of every route?
- Is the Pig King, Beefalo, cave entrance or Oasis close enough to help without forcing you into cramped terrain?
- Does the site have a summer plan, including an Endothermic Fire Pit and Ice Flingomatic?
- Can the Fire Pit, kitchen, workshop, storage and exit be reached quickly at night?
- Is the first Lightning Rod central to the structures you actually need to protect?
- Are farms, animal pens, defenses and future specialty structures outside the survival core?
- Have you left empty ground instead of filling every tile during the first season?
If the answer is yes, a grassland/forest border is usually the strongest starting point. Choose the Oasis, cave entrance, Pig King or wormhole instead when that landmark directly supports your strategy and the surrounding terrain passes the same space, safety and seasonal checks.
