The dependable workflow is two separate jobs: build and test a node as an n8n package, then install that package in the environment that runs your self-hosted instance. Use n8n’s n8n-node CLI to scaffold, compile, lint and preview the node. For deployment, build a custom Docker image when n8n runs in Docker, or install the package inside the actual global n8n installation when n8n runs directly on a host. Pin the n8n and node versions, verify the current runtime requirements, and test the resulting image or installation before replacing production.

A custom node is a JavaScript or TypeScript package that n8n loads alongside its built-in nodes. It can add an API operation, a trigger, a credential type, or a transformation that the standard catalog does not provide. The package executes inside the n8n process, so it is a code dependency rather than a loose script.
n8n’s overview assumes that you are comfortable with JavaScript or TypeScript, Git, npm package conventions, n8n workflows, data structures and item linking. The development-environment page currently lists Node.js 22.22.0 as the minimum version. That requirement, like the supported n8n image and CLI behavior, is release-sensitive; check the current documentation before installing a newer or older runtime at n8n’s development-environment guide.

- Install the Node.js version required by the n8n release you will target, together with npm.
- Use Git if you want to work from the starter repository or keep the node in version control.
- Use an editor with ESLint, EditorConfig and Prettier support. n8n recommends VS Code with those extensions.
- Keep a test n8n instance separate from production. You will need representative credentials, sample payloads and workflows that exercise every operation.
- If you use the CLI-managed development preview, have Docker or Podman available. The current CLI documentation says that, from n8n 3.0, the local development instance runs in a container.
Do not assume that the Node.js version on your workstation is the version in the production image or service. Record both before you build; a package that compiles successfully can still fail when its runtime, n8n API, permissions or dependency tree differs in production.
Choose declarative or programmatic implementation
Decide the implementation style before scaffolding. n8n calls declarative style the default for new nodes: “Build your node in the declarative style. It’s the default for new nodes.” It is generally the shortest path for a conventional REST integration. Programmatic style gives you full control when the integration or node behavior cannot be represented by configuration.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Style | How it works | Use it when | Important consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Declarative | JSON-like properties describe authentication, HTTP methods, paths, parameters, pagination and response mapping. A custom execute() method is usually unnecessary. |
The service exposes a conventional REST API and each operation maps cleanly to an HTTP request. | Less implementation code means fewer places to maintain, but unusual control flow or non-HTTP behavior may not fit. |
| Programmatic | TypeScript or JavaScript implements execution and, where needed, trigger behavior directly. | Triggers, GraphQL or another non-REST protocol, external dependencies, complex transformations, feature-based branching or custom control flow. | You own request handling, data conversion, errors and edge cases. Trigger nodes must use this style. |
One package can contain both styles. For example, a REST resource node can be declarative while a webhook trigger for the same service is programmatic. The detailed decision guidance is in Choose a node building style.
Scaffold the package with n8n-node
n8n describes n8n-node as “the official CLI for developing community nodes for n8n.” The initializer creates the package structure, TypeScript configuration, linting rules and starter implementation.
- From the directory where you keep projects, run:
npm create @n8n/node@latest - Answer the prompts for the package name, implementation style and template. Package names use
n8n-nodes-<name>or the scoped form@<org>/n8n-nodes-<name>. Choose a name that will remain accurate if the integration gains more operations. - Change into the generated directory and commit the untouched scaffold. Keeping that first commit makes later changes and upgrades easier to review.
You can install the CLI globally instead:
npm install --global @n8n/node-cli
n8n-node --version
n8n-node new
The global route is useful when you create several packages, but record the CLI version in your development notes. The prompts and generated templates can change between releases. The complete command reference is in Using the n8n-node tool.
Implement the node contract, not just the API call
Start with the smallest useful operation and then expand. The generated template shows where node metadata, properties, credentials and execution code belong; keep that structure unless there is a clear reason to diverge.
Define the user-facing surface
Give the node a clear display name, description, icon and operation labels. Group related actions under resources and operations so a workflow author can predict what a selection will do. Every property should have a useful description, a sensible default where one exists, and validation that prevents an invalid request from reaching the service.

Model authentication as a credential
Declare the credential type in the package and reference it from each operation that needs it. Test missing, expired and insufficiently scoped credentials, not only a successful token. Never place a secret in source code, a default value or a log message. If an API supports multiple authentication methods, expose them deliberately rather than silently choosing one.
Preserve n8n’s item behavior
n8n passes data as items, so test a single item, multiple items and expressions that refer to data from earlier nodes. Check item linking when one input produces several outputs or when an output points back to a particular input. A request that works for one hard-coded payload can still produce confusing downstream results if links or field types are lost.
Make failures actionable
Return the service’s useful status and message without exposing credentials. Distinguish authentication failures, validation errors, rate limits, timeouts and an unavailable upstream service. If the API returns structured error details, include the safe fields in the n8n error while preserving the original status code where the node framework allows it. Decide whether a transient failure should be retried by the workflow or reported immediately; do not hide a failed operation behind an empty success result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBuild, lint and preview the node locally
Run the normal work loop from the package directory:
n8n-node build
n8n-node lint
n8n-node dev
The equivalent npm scripts are normally available:
npm run build
npm run lint
npm run dev
build compiles the TypeScript and packages project assets into the distribution output. lint checks n8n’s conventions and can attempt fixes where the generated configuration permits them. Treat a clean lint result as a baseline, not proof that the API behavior is correct.
dev starts n8n with the package loaded so you can create a workflow and exercise the node through the normal editor. Add the node to a workflow, configure a real test credential, run each operation and inspect both successful and failed executions. Include expressions and multi-item inputs rather than testing only the example values in the template.
Because the current CLI-managed preview uses a container from n8n 3.0 onward, a missing Docker or Podman installation can make n8n-node dev fail before your code runs. Install one of those runtimes, or run your own compatible n8n separately and use:

n8n-node dev --external-n8n
The external instance must be started with N8N_DEV_RELOAD=true so it can reload the package. Confirm the exact behavior for the n8n release you are using in the CLI documentation before relying on this mode.
Validation checklist before deployment
Use a repeatable workflow instead of treating the first successful request as acceptance. The following checks catch most deployment-only surprises:
- Run every operation with valid data and with the required fields omitted.
- Exercise authentication failure, authorization failure, malformed responses, rate limiting, network timeout and upstream outage paths.
- Verify pagination, limits, sorting and date or timezone handling against realistic account data.
- Run one item and a batch of items, then inspect the output types and item links in downstream nodes.
- Check binary data if the integration uploads or downloads files.
- Confirm that expressions resolve in the same way they do in the target n8n release.
- Build from a clean checkout using a lockfile so an undeclared local dependency cannot mask a packaging problem.
- Test the built output, not only TypeScript executed by an editor or development helper.
Record the n8n version, Node.js version, CLI version and package version used for the test. The closer this matrix is to production, the less likely a private node is to fail after installation.
Choose the deployment path for your self-hosted setup
Deployment is separate from development. The right procedure depends on how n8n itself is installed.
Recommended Free Tools
| Deployment | Operational work | How updates arrive | Package privacy | Version confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Custom Docker image | Build and publish an image, then roll it out through your container configuration. | Rebuild the image after changing n8n or the node, then deploy the new image. | The node can remain a local or private package copied into the image; npm publication is not required. | High when the image pins both n8n and the node and is tested before rollout. |
| Global n8n installation | Install the package inside the directory where the global n8n installation resolves modules, then restart the service. | Install a new package version in that installation and restart n8n. | Local paths, private registries and private packages are possible, subject to your npm setup. | Depends on matching the service’s package manager, Node.js runtime and n8n version. |
| Manual community-package installation | Install into n8n’s node directory, commonly used for self-hosted queue-mode or private packages. | Run an npm update or install a specific version, then restart every process that must load it. | Works with a private package or a package available from npm. | Requires explicit testing because an upgrade can change or break existing workflows. |
n8n documents the Docker and global procedures in Install private nodes and the manual package procedure in Manual installation of community nodes.
Deploy a private node in Docker
The reproducible Docker approach is to compile the package first, copy its built node and credential directories into a custom n8n image, and run that image instead of the stock image. The exact base image tag, user and custom-node path are release-sensitive, so compare your Dockerfile with the current n8n instructions before building.

npm ci
n8n-node build
n8n-node lint
Confirm that the build produced the expected dist/nodes and, when credentials are included, dist/credentials directories. Do not copy TypeScript source in place of the compiled output.
2. Create a pinned image
A current-style Dockerfile can follow this pattern, but verify the n8n release’s documented image and filesystem details before using it:
ARG N8N_VERSION
FROM n8nio/n8n:${N8N_VERSION}
USER root
RUN mkdir -p /home/node/.n8n/custom
COPY dist/nodes /home/node/.n8n/custom/nodes
COPY dist/credentials /home/node/.n8n/custom/credentials
RUN chown -R node:node /home/node/.n8n/custom
USER node
Build it with an explicit n8n version rather than an unpinned floating tag:
docker build --build-arg N8N_VERSION=<target-version> -t n8n-with-private-node:<node-version> .
The angle-bracket values are shell placeholders: replace them with the exact release and package version you have tested. If your node has runtime dependencies, ensure they are installed and included according to the package’s generated configuration; copying source files alone is not enough for a dependency that is absent from the image.
3. Replace the image in your deployment
Change the image reference in Docker Compose, Kubernetes, or the service definition that starts n8n. Keep the existing persistent volume and environment configuration. Build and start the new container in a non-production environment first, then inspect startup logs for module, permission and syntax errors.
4. Verify discovery in the editor
Open the node picker, search for the node’s display name, create a credential, and execute a representative workflow. Verify that the node appears on every n8n process that can execute work, not only on the editor container. In queue mode, workers need the same image or an equivalent package installation.
5. Roll out and update deliberately
Keep the previous image tag available for rollback. When you change the node, rebuild the image with a new node tag, run the validation workflow, and deploy that image. When you upgrade n8n, rebuild and retest the node against the new base image instead of changing only the running container. n8n’s sample Dockerfile has included older Node 16-era material; treat it as historical guidance and use the requirements for the release you actually deploy.
Best Value
Install into a globally installed n8n
With a host-level n8n installation, n8n must be able to resolve the package from its own installation context. A host-wide npm install in an unrelated directory does not guarantee discovery.
- Identify the executable and package manager used by the service. For an npm global installation, inspect the executable and global module root:
command -v n8n npm root --global npm prefix --global npm list --global --depth=0 - Locate the n8n package directory under that global root. With a conventional npm installation it is commonly the
n8ndirectory beneath the global module root; confirm the path rather than assuming it. - Install the private package from its local directory, tarball or private registry in that n8n package context. For a conventional npm layout, the operation is equivalent to:
cd <global-n8n-package-directory> npm install /absolute/path/to/your-node-package - Restart the n8n service using the same systemd, process manager or container supervisor that normally starts it. A running process will not necessarily rescan its modules.
- Open the editor and execute a workflow using the node. Check the service logs if it does not appear; a dependency-resolution or permissions error is more useful than repeatedly reinstalling the package.
If n8n was installed with pnpm, another package manager, a platform image or a custom service wrapper, follow that installation’s module-resolution rules instead of applying npm-global commands. Keep a record of the package version and installation path so the next n8n upgrade does not silently remove the node.

Use the manual node directory for a private npm package
n8n documents manual installation for self-hosted community packages when the instance runs in queue mode or the package is private. In a Docker deployment, open a shell in the n8n container, create the node directory and install the package there:
docker exec -it <n8n-container> sh
mkdir -p ~/.n8n/nodes
cd ~/.n8n/nodes
npm install <package-name-or-private-package-reference>
Exit the shell and restart n8n. If the package is private, provide authentication through the npm configuration or registry mechanism appropriate for your environment; do not bake a long-lived registry token into a public image layer.
For an update, install the tested version explicitly or run an npm update from the same directory. An upgrade can contain breaking changes and can invalidate workflows that use the node. Export or otherwise preserve the current package version, test the new version against representative workflows, and retain a rollback command or package artifact. In queue mode, make the package and version consistent on every process that loads or executes workflows, and restart those processes after the change.
Keep private deployment separate from publication
You do not need to publish a private node to npm or submit it for verification. If you do intend to distribute it as a community package, n8n’s publication guidance adds package metadata requirements:
- The package name starts with
n8n-nodes-or the scoped equivalent. package.jsonincludes then8n-community-node-packagekeyword.- The
n8nfield declares the compiled node and credential entry points. - The package is linted and tested locally before publication.
For a package submitted through n8n’s Creator Portal, the current page says that publication beginning May 1, 2026 must use GitHub Actions with an npm provenance statement. It also lists technical and user-experience requirements for verified nodes, including no runtime dependencies. These rules can change; check Submit community nodes immediately before publishing. A private package should not be described as verified merely because it uses the official CLI.
Security and node-management controls
Custom nodes execute inside n8n with the privileges available to that process. Treat the source and every runtime dependency as trusted code. Review the repository, maintenance history, requested permissions and transitive dependencies before installing it. Pin versions where practical and test updates in a disposable or staging instance. n8n’s security audit includes community and custom nodes in its node-risk report, which makes the package visible to your operational review but does not certify it as safe for your deployment.
When your organization restricts community packages, external modules or individual node types, use the current node environment-variable reference rather than copying an old variable name from a blog post. The reference covers controls for which nodes load, community-node settings, external modules in the Code node and node-specific limits: Nodes environment variables.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The node does not appear in the picker. | The package was copied to the wrong directory, the compiled files are missing, or n8n was not restarted. | Inspect the built output, verify the installation path used by the running process, check startup logs and restart every relevant editor and worker process. |
n8n-node dev stops before opening n8n. |
Docker or Podman is unavailable for the CLI-managed preview. | Install a supported container runtime or use --external-n8n with an independently started instance configured with N8N_DEV_RELOAD=true. |
| The node appears but its credential type is missing. | The credential file was not built or copied, or the package metadata does not declare it. | Rebuild, inspect dist/credentials, verify the n8n metadata and rebuild the image or reinstall the package. |
| It works locally but fails in production. | Different Node.js or n8n versions, missing runtime dependencies, permissions or environment variables. | Compare the recorded version matrix, inspect container or service logs, and test the production image or installation in staging. |
| A package upgrade breaks an existing workflow. | The new package changed an operation, field, credential or response shape. | Restore the previous pinned version, export the failing workflow’s data, test the new version against representative workflows and roll forward only after review. |
| Only some executions can find the node. | Queue workers or separate n8n processes do not have the same package. | Install the identical version or deploy the identical custom image everywhere that can execute the workflow, then restart those processes. |
The reliable rule is simple: develop with the official CLI, validate the compiled package in an environment that matches production, and deploy the package through the same mechanism that owns your n8n runtime. That separation keeps local iteration quick without turning an untracked module into a production outage.
