How Much Does It Cost to Run a Telegram Bot in 2026?

Most Telegram bots cost $5–15 per month to run in 2026 because the Bot API is free and hosting is the main expense. Database, media, and AI workloads raise the budget, while paid broadcasts use Telegram Stars above the free send rate.

For most Telegram bots, the realistic 2026 budget is about $5–15 per month for hosting. Telegram does not charge a standard monthly fee or a normal per-message fee for Bot API traffic. Your bill usually comes from the server that keeps the bot online, then from a database, file storage, or an AI-model API if your bot needs them. A small database-backed bot commonly lands around $15–50 per month; an AI bot can reach $50–300 or more as usage grows.

What you actually pay for

A Telegram bot is software that receives updates from Telegram and sends replies through the Bot API. Telegram supplies the messaging network and API without a standard subscription charge. You provide the computing environment and any supporting services.

That makes the budget easier to understand when split into four possible lines:

  • Telegram Bot API: normally $0.
  • Hosting: the recurring cost of a VPS, platform-as-a-service container, or serverless runtime.
  • Data and files: a database, object storage, logs, backups, or queues when your bot needs persistent state.
  • External APIs: model APIs, search, maps, email, payment, or other services used by the bot.

A notification bot that runs a small script can therefore cost only the price of an entry-level server. A bot that stores user accounts, keeps conversation history, processes media, and calls an AI model has several independent usage meters.

Is the Telegram Bot API free?

Standard Bot API use has no Telegram monthly fee and no ordinary charge for each message. The important exception is Telegram’s paid-broadcast feature, which is designed for very high outbound send rates rather than normal one-to-one replies.

Normal message limits

Telegram’s documented default capacity is roughly 30 messages per second for a bot across users. Sending faster can produce HTTP 429 “Too Many Requests” responses. The Bots FAQ also advises staying near one message per second in a single chat and about 20 messages per minute in groups. These are rate limits, not prices: slowing down avoids errors but does not create a Telegram bill.

Paid broadcasts

With paid broadcasts enabled in @BotFather, a bot can raise its broadcast ceiling to 1,000 messages per second. Messages sent above the free 30-per-second rate cost 0.1 Telegram Stars each. Telegram deducts Stars from the bot’s Stars balance and charges only successfully delivered messages, not failed attempts.

The cost is denominated in Telegram Stars, so do not treat 0.1 Stars as a fixed dollar amount. The value you pay to acquire Stars and any regional or account-specific terms can change. Check the live @BotFather flow and Telegram documentation before budgeting a large campaign.

Eligibility is currently inconsistent

Telegram’s published material does not state one consistent eligibility threshold. The Bots FAQ says a bot needs at least 100,000 Stars and 100,000 monthly active users, while the Bot API paid-broadcast section says at least 10,000 Stars. The FAQ appears to contain older metadata, but that has not been definitively confirmed. Treat both figures as provisional and verify the requirement shown for your bot in @BotFather immediately before relying on paid broadcasts.

How much can a broadcast cost?

Only the messages above the free rate are chargeable. For example, if a campaign sends 100,000 messages in a controlled burst and all are delivered while the paid rate applies, the arithmetic is 100,000 × 0.1 = 10,000 Stars. A campaign spread over a long enough window can remain within the free rate; Telegram’s FAQ gives an 8–12-hour spreading strategy as an alternative to paying for a burst.

That example is a Stars calculation, not a currency quote. It also assumes every message is delivered and that the paid-broadcast feature is available to the bot.

Hosting costs in 2026

For an always-on bot, hosting is normally the largest predictable expense. Secondary 2026 pricing guides put entry VPS plans at roughly $4–6 per month. Examples cited in those guides include a small Hetzner CX11 at about $4.50 monthly, a basic DigitalOcean Droplet at $6, and an AWS EC2 t3.small at about $15. Actual prices vary by region, billing term, taxes, storage, and whether the provider charges separately for backups or bandwidth.

Some directories list plans around $3–4 while another says plans start at $6. Because those listings conflict and provider prices change, use them as a range for planning rather than a quotation. Confirm the current price on the provider’s own calculator before committing.

Fixed VPS

A VPS gives you a virtual Linux machine that remains available continuously. You pay a predictable monthly amount and can run a polling process, webhook server, database, reverse proxy, and scheduled jobs on one host. The trade-off is operational work: updates, firewall rules, process supervision, backups, and monitoring are your responsibility.

Free and low-cost platforms

Free tiers can be useful while testing, but they often impose an hours cap, sleep the process, or introduce cold starts. One commonly cited free plan supplies 500 hours per month—roughly 16 hours per day—so it is not equivalent to 24/7 hosting. The same platform is reported at about $5 per month for always-on use. Always-Free virtual machines and serverless platforms can also work for low-traffic webhook bots, provided their execution time, memory, request, and outbound-network limits fit your design.

A sleeping worker can miss timely polling, and a cold start can delay the first response. If users expect immediate replies or scheduled notifications, price an always-on plan instead of assuming a free tier is production-ready.

Typical monthly totals by bot type

The following ranges combine secondary 2026 estimates with the infrastructure assumptions behind each type. They are planning figures, not Telegram price lists.

Bot type Typical monthly budget What the estimate assumes
Simple notification bot About $6 One small always-on host, little or no persistent data, and no paid model API.
Basic command or utility bot $5–15 Entry VPS or always-on platform, modest traffic, and lightweight logs.
Bot with a database $15–50 Application hosting plus a managed or self-hosted database, backups, and moderate business use.
AI-powered bot $50–300 Hosting plus a GPT-class model API; the model bill varies with prompt length, replies, and user volume.
High-traffic bot $100–500 More than 10,000 daily active users, with additional workers, database capacity, bandwidth, monitoring, or caching.

The AI range is particularly uncertain. One secondary example combines a $5–10 VPS with roughly $3 per month for a small model at 5,000 messages. That is an example workload, not a universal model price; vendor rates, token counts, context length, and output size can change the result substantially.

What changes the bill besides the server?

Database and storage

A bot can keep small settings in local files, but user profiles, subscriptions, moderation records, queues, and conversation history need durable storage. A database may be free during development, included with a platform, or billed separately. Budget for storage growth, automated backups, and the cost of restoring data—not just the database’s headline plan.

AI model usage

For an AI bot, calculate cost per conversation rather than choosing a monthly guess. Estimate the average input tokens, output tokens, conversations per user, and monthly active users, then apply the model vendor’s current rates. Long conversation history can make every request more expensive because previous messages are sent again as context. Limiting history, summarizing old turns, imposing per-user quotas, and selecting a smaller model for routine requests can keep usage predictable.

Media, logs, and bandwidth

Photos, videos, documents, voice messages, and generated files consume disk and bandwidth. Retaining every upload indefinitely can turn a small bot into a storage project. Set retention periods, cap file sizes, delete temporary files, and monitor egress. Verbose logs are useful during development but can consume disk quickly; rotate them and keep only the retention period you need.

Reliability and operations

A production bot may need a second process, health checks, alerting, off-site backups, and a staging environment. These can fit on one VPS at low traffic, but each added component can introduce another paid service. Decide whether a brief outage is acceptable before paying for redundancy.

Polling versus webhooks: a cost decision

Long polling keeps a worker connected to Telegram and is straightforward on a VPS. It needs a continuously running process, so a sleeping free tier is a poor fit. Webhooks let Telegram call an HTTPS endpoint when an update arrives and can suit serverless hosting, where you pay for requests rather than an idle process. Webhooks still require a stable public endpoint, TLS, and code that finishes within the platform’s execution limits.

For a low-volume bot, either approach can be inexpensive. Choose based on operational simplicity and platform limits, not on a presumed Telegram fee: Telegram does not charge extra for choosing one update method.

A practical way to build your 2026 budget

  1. Count active users and messages. Separate incoming commands, outgoing replies, scheduled notifications, and broadcasts. Peak rate matters as much as monthly volume.
  2. Classify the workload. Mark whether the bot needs 24/7 execution, a database, media processing, background jobs, or an AI API.
  3. Choose the cheapest reliable runtime. Use a free tier for a prototype, an always-on VPS for a simple production worker, or serverless hosting for low-volume webhook requests that tolerate cold starts.
  4. Price persistent services. Add database storage, backups, object storage, log retention, and monitoring instead of treating them as included automatically.
  5. Model variable usage. For AI, multiply requests by average input and output usage. For broadcasts, determine whether the campaign stays under roughly 30 messages per second or needs paid capacity.
  6. Add a safety margin. Reserve money for traffic spikes, provider price changes, tax, and an unexpected increase in model or storage usage.

Example: small notification bot

Suppose a bot sends a few scheduled alerts and answers occasional commands. An entry VPS in the $4–6 range, plus a small allowance for backups or monitoring, produces a practical budget near $6–10 per month. It does not need paid broadcasts unless it sends large bursts.

Example: database-backed service

A membership or booking bot may need an always-on application, a database, backups, and logs. The secondary estimate of $15–50 per month is a reasonable planning band, with the lower end possible when services share one small VPS and the higher end reflecting managed database capacity and safer backups.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Example: AI assistant

Start with a $5–15 hosting allowance, then calculate model usage from real prompt and response sizes. A light workload may add only a few dollars; frequent, long conversations can push the total toward $50–300 per month. Set quotas and alerts before opening the bot to a large audience.

Ways to keep the cost under control

  • Throttle broadcasts and spread non-urgent sends over 8–12 hours to remain within the free rate.
  • Use queues and exponential backoff when Telegram returns a 429 response instead of repeatedly retrying immediately.
  • Keep polling workers, databases, and scheduled jobs on one modest VPS until resource monitoring shows a bottleneck.
  • Delete temporary media and rotate logs.
  • Cache repeated answers and use short-lived results for expensive external API calls.
  • Limit AI context, cap output length, and apply per-user rate and spending limits.
  • Track CPU, memory, disk, outbound traffic, message rate, model requests, and Stars balance in one dashboard.

Costs that are not established here

Payment-provider charges for selling goods or subscriptions through a bot vary by provider, country, payment method, and product. A secondary estimate of 1.5%–3.5% plus a fixed transaction fee could not be tied to a verified provider page, so do not use it as a firm budget number. Obtain the current schedule from the payment processor you select.

Telegram also offers a separate Gateway API for verification codes. A secondary source mentions about $0.01 per delivered code, but that figure was not verified against Telegram’s own pages. Treat it as unconfirmed until you check the current Gateway documentation and account terms.

Bottom line for 2026 planning

Budget $5–15 per month for a small, always-on Telegram bot, $15–50 when it needs a real database and operational safeguards, and roughly $50–300 when an AI model is central to the experience. Telegram’s ordinary Bot API remains free; the exceptional Telegram-side expense is paid broadcasting, priced at 0.1 Stars for each successfully delivered message above the free 30-per-second rate and subject to eligibility rules that should be checked in the live Telegram interface. Start with measured traffic, then increase capacity only when your bot’s users, data, or model usage justify it.
