A sound design keeps extraction evidence attached to each field, carries stable source references through retrieval and generation, and sends uncertain or consequential cases to a person.
The product documentation available for invoice extraction and citation describes capabilities that can support this design; it does not establish the architecture or results of a particular build. The pattern below is therefore an implementation guide, not a claim about an undocumented production system.

Define an exception as a reviewable claim
Make each exception explainable in terms of a business rule, the fields evaluated, and the evidence a reviewer needs to confirm or dismiss it. For example, a rule might flag a difference between an invoice total and a purchase-order total. The alert should identify the compared values and the rule, then point to the source evidence for each value.

- Normalized field name, such as invoice date or total.
- Detected value and, when available, the printed label.
- Confidence returned by the extraction service.
- Document and page locator, including page geometry when available.
- Stable source and passage identifiers that can be resolved to readable evidence.
Amazon Textract AnalyzeExpense documents extraction of invoice and receipt summary fields and line-item groups, with confidence and page geometry. Its response distinguishes a normalized field type, an optional label as printed, and the detected value. Those distinctions are useful in a review interface: a normalized type supports rules, while the printed label and location help a person verify what the document actually says. Textract query responses can also include answer text, confidence, and location.
Keep extraction confidence separate from exception severity
Confidence describes the extraction system’s certainty signal; it is not a score for whether a business rule has been violated. A clearly read amount can still fail a matching rule. Conversely, a low-confidence field may deserve review even when the available values do not show a mismatch.

Amazon Textract’s best-practice guidance says the optimal confidence threshold depends on the application and gives 90% or higher as an example for financial decision processes. Treat that as AWS guidance, not a universal standard or a validated cutoff for a specific agent. Set thresholds according to field type, error consequences, and evidence quality, then validate them on the actual workflow.

Once an exception is detected, the explanation should be grounded in the evidence attached to the relevant fields. A practical design assigns stable identifiers to source documents and useful passages, retains the readable text and a page or geometry locator, and passes those identifiers alongside the evidence into the explanation step.

OpenAI’s citation guidance recommends stable source IDs paired with readable cited material. Azure AI Search documents references retained for citation purposes. These are examples of capabilities and guidance that can inform an implementation; they do not imply that a particular invoice agent used either product.
Make the reference useful to the reviewer
A citation should resolve to the exact invoice passage or region that supports a value—not merely to a document title or a broad search result. In a review screen, the person should be able to open that location, compare the printed evidence with the extracted value, and see the rule that produced the alert. If the explanation uses multiple values, preserve a separate source reference for each one.

Route uncertainty and consequential cases to a person
Design escalation around the consequence of an error, the field involved, and the strength of the evidence. A low-confidence total or a disagreement between invoice evidence and a purchase order may warrant human review; a low-impact formatting discrepancy may follow a different path. The policy should specify when the agent can proceed, when it should abstain, and what information the reviewer sees.

Microsoft guidance describes grounding and citations as aids for checking answers, while advising reviewers to inspect sources and confirm critical details before acting. A citation makes evidence inspectable; it does not prove that the extraction, retrieved passage, or generated explanation is correct. Reviewers should confirm critical financial details against the source document before taking action.
Evaluate the system with workflow-specific evidence
Vendor documentation describes product capabilities, not the performance of an invoice exception agent. To report results for a particular implementation, evaluate it on a defined set of invoices and disclose enough context for the numbers to be interpreted.
- Test set: size, invoice sources, geography, and evaluation date.
- Coverage: exception categories and the fields evaluated.
- Extraction quality: field-level accuracy, measured separately for relevant field types.
- Evidence quality: whether each citation points to the correct source passage or page region.
- Safety behavior: abstention, escalation, and reviewer-correction rates.
Do not use a vendor’s example confidence threshold as an accuracy result, or imply that a cited explanation is correct merely because it includes a source reference.

Extraction and retrieval components should be chosen for the fields and evidence your workflow needs. The cited documentation supports the following limited comparison; it does not establish comparative pricing, latency, or regional availability.
