You can build AI skills without leaving your occupation or starting a generic technical curriculum. Begin with one work outcome you want to improve, identify the tasks and judgment behind it, then learn and practise only the skills that fit those tasks. Check your employer’s tool and data rules before trying AI on work, and review the result for quality as well as speed.
Start with a work outcome, not a course
Choose a recurring responsibility where improvement would matter: for example, making a report easier to review, preparing a first draft more efficiently, or finding information in a permitted knowledge base. Keep the goal narrow enough to practise and assess. “Learn AI” is too broad; “produce a better-structured first draft for this recurring report” gives you something concrete to investigate.

Note how you handle the task now. Record a simple baseline that suits the work, such as time spent, number of revision rounds, completeness against a checklist, or feedback from the person who uses the result. The point is not to prove that AI caused a change, but to make a fair comparison when you try a new approach.
Map the task and the human judgment it needs
Break the responsibility into its main steps. For each, identify the inputs, decisions, and review that happen before the work is complete. Separate routine assistance—such as organizing supplied information—from decisions that require professional expertise, accountability, or context that a tool may not have.

- Steps: Where do you draft, summarize, classify, calculate, or hand work to someone else?
- Judgment: Which claims, recommendations, or final decisions must a qualified person check?
- Outcome: What would count as a useful improvement without lowering quality?
Choose the AI skill depth that fits your role
Use the task map to name the gap. A practical way to organize the choice is to ask whether you need basic AI literacy, skill using an approved tool, stronger evaluation and verification, workflow integration, or technical ability to build and deploy AI systems. These are planning categories, not a universal curriculum.
The appropriate depth varies by role. LinkedIn Learning’s 2025 Workplace Learning Report contrasts introductory generative-AI fluency for administrative assistants with the advanced skills engineers need to build and deploy AI systems. That distinction is a reason not to assume every worker needs engineering-level knowledge. [LinkedIn Learning, 2025 Workplace Learning Report]

| Learning level | Best fit | Questions to check |
|---|---|---|
| Introductory AI fluency | Work where AI may assist with tasks, but the employee remains responsible for selecting, checking, and using the output. | Does it match a task you actually do? Can you practise with an approved tool? What review is needed before using the result? |
| Technical AI skills | Work that involves building, integrating, or deploying AI systems. | What technical prerequisites does the target work require? Can you practise on an approved project? Does this depth support your next role? |
The comparison questions are practical checks, not a published scoring system. If you are unsure which level applies, ask a manager, experienced colleague, or mentor to connect the task map to the work expected in your role.

Before entering work information into any AI tool, check which tools your employer approves, what data may be used, and what review is required for output. Rules differ by organization and task; the fact that a tool is available does not establish that a particular work use is permitted. If you do not know the rules, ask the appropriate manager or internal contact and use fictional or otherwise approved practice material until you do.

Choose a learning format and a low-risk exercise
Match the format to the gap and to the kind of feedback you need. A structured lesson can introduce concepts; a mentor can help with a specialist skill; peer learning gives you a way to compare approaches; and a cross-functional project can expose you to a real workflow. LinkedIn’s 2025 Skills Playbook describes these as career-development approaches, not requirements for every learner. [LinkedIn Learning, 2025 Skills Playbook]
| Format | Useful when | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Structured course or lesson | You need an organized introduction or a defined skill sequence. | Does it teach the gap you identified, and can you apply it to a relevant task? |
| Mentoring | You need feedback on a technical or role-specific question. | Can the mentor review the skill you want to develop, and is time available? |
| Peer learning | You want to compare methods, prompts, or review practices with colleagues. | Can participants share examples without disclosing restricted information? |
| Cross-functional project | You need hands-on practice with a broader workflow or a possible next-role skill. | Is the project approved, appropriately scoped, and supported by the people accountable for its outcome? |
Pair a short lesson or explanation with one small exercise. For example, practise using an approved tool to organize non-sensitive sample information, then check whether the output is accurate and usable. Do not use a high-stakes decision or restricted data as an experiment. A paid course may provide structure if it directly addresses your named gap, but a particular course or platform is not required by this planning method.

Ask for specific feedback and connect the plan to your next step
Bring a concise plan to a manager, mentor, or peer: the work outcome, the task you want to practise, the skill gap, and the kind of feedback you need. Ask for concrete help—such as confirming the approved tool, reviewing a sample, identifying a mentor, or pointing to a project where the skill is relevant. LinkedIn Learning reported that 15% of employees said their manager helped them build a career plan in the prior six months, down five percentage points from 2024. That report figure is a reason to make the conversation specific, not an estimate of what will happen at every workplace. [LinkedIn Learning, 2025 Workplace Learning Report]

Review results and adjust the plan
After practising, compare the result with your baseline and the outcome you chose. Consider quality, completeness, required human review, and whether the process is permitted—not just how quickly the first output appeared. Ask a colleague or manager who understands the work to review it when that is appropriate.
- Continue if the skill is relevant, the practice is permitted, and the result meets the quality bar.
- Change the exercise or learning format if the skill seems relevant but the practice is not producing usable results or helpful feedback.
- Pause or choose another task if the tool, data use, or review requirements are unclear or the risks exceed the value of the exercise.
- Deepen the skill if the work goal is supported and your next role calls for more advanced capability.
Set a review point that fits the task and your available learning time; the sources do not establish a universal schedule or time commitment. LinkedIn Learning’s 2025 report found that 51% of organizations it classified as career-development champions described their generative-AI adoption as leading or accelerating, compared with 36% of organizations with weaker career-development programs. This is a comparison between LinkedIn-defined groups, not proof that career programs caused AI adoption or that an individual plan will improve job performance. The report’s platform insights date to September 2024. [LinkedIn Learning, 2025 Workplace Learning Report]
Use the numbers as context, not a personal forecast
LinkedIn’s January 15, 2025 Work Change Report announcement said it expected 70% of skills used in most jobs to change by 2030, with AI a catalyst. This is LinkedIn’s expectation, not an observed universal outcome. [LinkedIn, Work Change Report announcement, January 15, 2025]
LinkedIn Learning says its 2025 Workplace Learning Report surveyed 937 learning and development and human-resources professionals with some budget influence, and 679 learners, across geographies spanning North America, Brazil, Asia-Pacific, and Europe. These are not grounds for treating the results as representative of every worker or workplace. The report also describes organizational practices—such as mentorship, career plans, and cross-functional projects—that may be useful options where an employer offers them; they are not a checklist individuals must complete.
