Build the page with Apps Script’s HTML service, read image files from a Google Drive folder on the server, and render their names and thumbnails in the browser. Deploy it as a web app, decide whose Drive permissions it will use, and handle missing thumbnails and asynchronous errors. The researched Google documentation does not specify an India-only implementation; the same architecture applies, while Workspace data-region obligations should be checked with your administrator.
How the thumbnail list works
The browser page and Drive access have different roles. Apps Script serves the HTML page through doGet(). A server-side function reads a selected Drive folder and returns file metadata plus a client-transferable thumbnail representation. The page calls that function using google.script.run, then builds a list or grid when the response arrives.

- Create an Apps Script project with a server file named
Code.gsand an HTML file namedIndex.html. - Make
doGet()return the HTML file usingHtmlService.createHtmlOutputFromFile('Index'). - Write a server function to open the intended Drive folder, iterate its files, and collect the metadata and thumbnail information your page needs.
- Represent thumbnail images using values that can safely cross the Apps Script client/server bridge. Do not assume a server-side
Blobcan be returned directly to browser JavaScript. - Call the server function from the page with success and failure handlers, and render the returned entries.
- Deploy the project as a web app and test it with an account representative of the people who will use the page.
This is an implementation architecture, not a tested end-to-end program. In particular, the Apps Script and Drive references establish the relevant APIs, but do not prescribe one universal way to serialize thumbnail data for a gallery.

Apps Script entry point
Google’s web-app guide requires a doGet(e) or doPost(e) function that returns HtmlOutput or TextOutput. For a page, the basic entry point is:

}
Server-side folder and thumbnail work
Use the Drive service to open the folder selected for the gallery and inspect its files. For each file, gather only the information the page needs, such as its name, ID, and thumbnail. The Apps Script File reference says getThumbnail() returns a Blob or null when no thumbnail exists. Handle null explicitly: skip that file, display a fallback image, or show a text-only card.
The server should convert any thumbnail into a representation appropriate for the client/server bridge before returning it. A data URL is one possible approach, but the official material cited here does not prescribe it or establish a safe response size for a particular folder. Test the chosen representation with real files and a realistically sized folder.

File.getThumbnail() requires Drive authorization, with drive.readonly or drive scopes noted by the File reference. For shared-drive access or Drive features not available in the built-in service, Google points developers to the advanced Drive service. Standard Cloud projects may also need the Drive API enabled; verify the configuration for your project.

google.script.run is asynchronous: calls may finish in a different order from the order in which they were made. Attach both success and failure handlers, show a loading state, and display a useful error rather than leaving users with an empty page. The HTML-service communication guide documents the client/server bridge and handler pattern.

google.script.run
.withSuccessHandler(renderItems)
.withFailureHandler(showError)
.getThumbnailItems();
In renderItems, build the cards or rows from the returned values. Use each file name as meaningful alternative text for its image, and provide a fallback for entries without thumbnails. Keep returned data limited to what the page needs; a large number of embedded image strings can increase response size and rendering work.
Choose whose Drive access the web app uses
The deployment identity is a security decision, not merely a setup detail. Google’s web-app deployment guide explains that the deployment can run as its developer or as the user accessing it.

| Deployment choice | Whose Drive permissions authorize reads? | Visitor authorization | Main access-control concern |
|---|---|---|---|
| Execute as the deployer | The deployer’s authority | Visitors do not necessarily authorize as themselves for the app’s Drive reads. | A broadly shared page could expose content the deployer can access. Return only files intended for that audience. |
| Execute as the accessing user | Each accessing user’s authority | Users may need to authorize the requested scopes and must have access to the files. | Visitors without the required Drive access cannot read the folder’s contents. |
Choose the model that matches the intended audience and sharing policy. Before sharing the URL, test with an account that should be allowed to see the gallery and, where relevant, one that should not.
Deploy and test the web app
- In the Apps Script project, open the deployment flow and create a web app deployment.
- Choose whether it executes as you (the deployer) or as the user accessing the app. Confirm that choice matches the Drive access model described above.
- Set who can access the deployment according to the intended audience. Avoid broad access if the page can return private files.
- Complete any required authorization, then open the deployed URL using an account representative of the intended visitor.
- Check that the folder contents, thumbnail fallback, loading state, and failure message all behave as expected. Also test the page using files with different types and access settings.
India-specific considerations, quotas, and scale
There is no separate India-specific code path established by the cited Apps Script or Drive documentation. For an organization with data-residency obligations, Google announced that Apps Script data-regions support became generally available on September 16, 2026. The announcement says covered script project data and execution processing follow the Workspace organization’s data-region policy; it does not establish an India region selection or a change that every personal tutorial user must make. Ask your Workspace administrator to confirm current policy settings when residency matters. Google also notes that non-regionalized services are disabled beginning September 2026 for organizations enabling a specified Drive and Docs disablement setting.

Google’s quotas page, last updated September 3, 2026, lists a six-minute script runtime per execution for both consumer and Workspace accounts in its cited table. Quotas are per user, differ by account type, and can change without notice. A large folder should therefore be processed in bounded batches and tested against the actual account and data. The cited sources do not establish a maximum safe gallery size.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The page opens but has no items: Check the folder ID and the deployment identity. A server-side exception should reach the failure handler; make sure that handler shows the error rather than silently doing nothing.
- Some files have no image:
getThumbnail()may returnnull. Display the planned fallback or omit the image instead of assuming every Drive file has a thumbnail. - Drive authorization or access fails: Confirm that the app has the required Drive scope and that the identity selected at deployment can access the folder. For shared-drive or unsupported built-in-service needs, check the advanced Drive service and whether the Drive API is enabled for the Cloud project.
- Visitors see different results: Check whether the app runs as the deployer or each accessing user. The former uses the deployer’s authority; the latter depends on visitor permissions and may require visitor authorization.
- The gallery is slow or fails with a large folder: Reduce the amount of work in a single execution, process bounded batches, and test the thumbnail representation’s response-size and rendering costs. The official sources do not provide a universal size threshold.
- Calls appear out of order or the page stays blank after an error: Treat each
google.script.runcall as asynchronous, use success and failure handlers, and manage loading and error states in the page.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture thumbnails of public web pages rather than list images stored in Drive, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; these cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs.
For example, the cURL request below saves a WebP screenshot. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free.
