To make visual content more discoverable in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, build it into pages Google can crawl and index, explain each image with relevant nearby text and useful alt text, and use structured data only when it accurately describes visible content. Google says its existing Search eligibility rules apply: there is no special AI markup or separate visual-AI checklist, and following best practices does not guarantee that a page or image will appear.
What visual SEO can—and cannot—do for AI search
Google’s guidance for AI Overviews and AI Mode starts with ordinary Search eligibility. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet to be eligible as a supporting link in those AI features. Eligibility is not a promise that Google will crawl, index, or display a page. Google Search Central’s AI features guidance recommends sound SEO fundamentals rather than a separate optimization layer.

For images, that means making both the page and image resources accessible, and helping Google understand how the visual relates to the page’s subject. Google advises keeping important information available in text and using high-quality images and video to support it where they add value. Visuals can strengthen a useful page; they do not substitute for its information or guarantee a place in an AI answer.
Make the page and image files discoverable
Start by checking whether Googlebot can access the page and its image resources. Hosting or CDN rules can prevent access even when an image appears normally to a site’s visitors. Link important pages from other relevant pages on your site so they can be found, and use Search Console to investigate indexing or technical issues.
#1 Best Overall
A compelling image cannot help discovery if its landing page is inaccessible or the image file cannot be fetched. Treat crawlability and indexing as prerequisites, not finishing touches.
Give each image clear context
Use a relevant landing page and nearby text
Place an image near the text that explains it, on a page that genuinely concerns its subject. That context helps search systems interpret the visual and gives readers a reason to see it. Keep the image URL stable where possible, and choose a concise, descriptive filename instead of a generic name such as IMG00023.JPG.

Write alt text for meaning and purpose
Google identifies alt text as the most important image metadata attribute. It helps people using screen readers or low-bandwidth connections, and Google interprets it together with computer vision and page content. Describe the meaningful content or function of the image in its context; include a search term only when it naturally fits. A string of keywords does not make alt text more useful. See Google’s guidance on Google Images.

Use structured data only when it fits
Structured data is not a shortcut to AI visibility. Google does not require special schema.org markup for AI Overviews or AI Mode. When an applicable Google feature supports an image, valid structured data may help make it eligible for a relevant rich result or Google Images badge, but eligibility depends on that feature’s rules. The markup must accurately reflect content visible to visitors; it does not create special eligibility for Google’s AI features.
Invest in distinctive visuals and useful information
Google’s AI optimization guide, published in May 2026, emphasizes distinctive, non-commodity content alongside established SEO fundamentals. For a visual strategy, that points toward images and video that genuinely explain, demonstrate, or document the subject—not stock visuals added solely to look optimized.
The same guide advises against purported Google-targeted shortcuts such as artificially chunking content, creating an unnecessary llms.txt file, or adding inauthentic mentions. Focus on what helps a visitor understand the topic and what Google can access and interpret.

Measure discovery without treating it as a placement promise
Use Search Console to inspect search performance and diagnose page or indexing problems. Google’s current guide also points to a generative AI performance report where available. A report can help you evaluate discovery over time, but neither reporting visibility nor compliance with guidance proves that an image will be cited, that a page will appear in an AI answer, or that a specific change caused a result.
Prioritize work in this order: crawl and index access, useful and distinctive visual material, clear page context and accessible alt text, accurate feature-specific structured data, then ongoing measurement. This is a practical workflow, not a published Google ranking formula.

The documented recommendations here concern Google Search, including AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Google Images. They do not establish a universal ranking recipe for ChatGPT, Bing, or other AI answer engines. Google makes no promise that following these practices will lead to inclusion.
