For a practical two-deck design, connect one audio element per track to its own gain and optional filter nodes, mix the decks, and send the result to the audio context’s output. Start playback from a user action, and use local tracks or a remote source configured for cross-origin access.
What a single-file DJ console needs
“Single file” describes how the app is packaged, not a special audio feature. The page can contain its markup, styles, and JavaScript together, while the browser supplies the audio engine. A useful two-deck interface can include a file selector and play/pause, seek, and volume controls for each track, plus a crossfader and master output. Those are design choices, not controls guaranteed by the Web Audio API or by the title alone.

The audio engine is a connected graph inside an AudioContext. Each track enters the graph as a source, passes through any processing and gain stages, and reaches the context’s destination. The graph is the mixer: changing a node’s parameters changes the signal before it reaches the output.

Plan the signal flow
A simple two-deck signal path looks like this:
Deck A audio element → source node → deck gain ┐
├→ mix/master gain → destination
Deck B audio element → source node → deck gain ┘
A crossfader can be implemented with gain nodes that change the contribution of each deck as the slider moves. Filters can be added in each deck’s path if the console needs tone shaping. These are implementation patterns built from the graph model; a console does not need every control to qualify as a mixer.

Route each track into the Web Audio graph
An HTML <audio> element is a straightforward source when you want built-in media behavior such as seeking and playback controls. Create an AudioContext, then pass each element to createMediaElementSource() and connect the returned node through the desired processing and gain nodes.
The element remains usable after it becomes a graph source: it can still be paused, seeked, and given a new source. What changes is how its sound reaches the listener. The W3C specification says rendered audio is no longer heard directly from the media element; it is heard through the connected routing graph. The media source node’s output is also resampled to match the context sample rate when required.

- Made for Your First Mix: Designed for anyone thinking of starting to DJ, so you can learn quickly and have fun from day one
- Smart Fader Does the Beatmatching: Automatically matches volume, BPM, and bass as you move the crossfader, even across genres
- Start With the Music You Have: Mix from Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, and more through compatible apps like rekordbox and djay
- Grab It and Go: AlphaTheta's lightest, most compact controller runs on USB-C bus power from a phone, tablet, or PC/Mac
- Play Your Way: Play through your phone or laptop's own speaker, connect external speakers via the 3.5 mm output, or cue on headphones
Keep each element and its source node associated with its deck. If the track changes, update the element’s media source rather than creating another source node for the same element. Keep the master path connected to AudioContext.destination; without that final connection, the graph has no route to the device output.

Browsers may block script-initiated audio until the user interacts with the page or otherwise grants permission. Do not assume an audio context can start playing automatically when the document loads. Make a clear Play or Start control resume the context and start the selected track in response to the click, while reporting playback errors in the interface.

The audio element still handles ordinary media actions such as pausing and seeking, while the context manages the audio graph. Keeping those roles separate makes it easier to diagnose a deck that appears to play but produces no sound: check both the element’s playback state and the graph’s connections and context state.
Load tracks without hitting the CORS silence rule
Local files are a practical choice for a self-contained console. For remote audio, the host must permit the page’s origin through suitable CORS headers. Under the Web Audio specification, when an audio element is classified as CORS-cross-origin, its MediaElementAudioSourceNode must output silence. Setting a remote URL alone does not bypass that rule.

When to add AudioWorklet or MIDI
AudioWorklet for custom processing
Built-in Web Audio nodes can handle ordinary gain and filtering. Consider an AudioWorklet only if the console needs custom sample-level audio processing; it is an extension, not a prerequisite for a mixer. Consult the current MDN AudioWorklet documentation for implementation and browser-support details before relying on it.

Web MIDI can provide input from a compatible physical control surface, but it is separate from the audio graph and entirely optional. A software console can be controlled with on-page buttons and sliders; adding MIDI means mapping incoming controller messages to the same parameters those controls change.

Keep the implementation honest about its scope
A browser console can demonstrate the core mixer architecture in one page, but a title or API choice alone does not establish which controls are implemented, which browsers or devices have been tested, or how reliably a particular setup performs. Treat those as properties to verify in the actual implementation rather than promises implied by using Web Audio.
