There is no documented one-size-fits-all best early fleet in Uncharted Waters Origin. Build around the ships and mates you have, the activity you want to do, and—if you plan to fight—the opponent’s ship type. Use each fleet slot as Company Level unlocks it, place ships with the default formation’s row bonuses in mind, fit mates to compatible cabins, and equip parts for the ship’s job.
Choose ships for the activity you plan to do
The official beginner guidance distinguishes Adventure, Trade, and Combat specializations, and the ship list gives examples of ships suited to different purposes: the Grade 1 Barque is an Adventure ship, the Grade 1 Tallette is for Trade, and the Grade 1 Hansa Cog is for Combat. These examples identify roles, not a ranking of the strongest ships. Start with the activity you expect to spend time on, then choose from the ships available to you. LINE Games’ official Ships guide and How to Use Ships explain ship roles and performance.

For exploration and trade
Favor a ship whose role and attributes suit your intended activity rather than treating combat strength as the only measure of fleet value. Parts can affect load capacity and seaworthiness as well as combat attributes, so consider those needs when outfitting ships used outside naval fights.
For naval combat
Combat ships specialize in Charging (ram), Artillery (ranged), Assault (melee), or Support. Charging beats Assault, Assault beats Artillery, and Artillery beats Charging; Support sits outside this cycle. The official Beginner Guide: Combat also notes that ships and mates have advantageous traits. Check the matchup indicator before committing to an attack instead of assuming a ship is effective against every opponent.

Expand the fleet as Company Level allows
Company Level determines how many ships you can assign, so add ships as new fleet slots become available. Consider each ship’s job alongside the mates you can assign and the supplies you need to carry; a slot is useful only if you can operate the ship effectively. LINE Games’ Fleet Basics: The Company explains this progression gate. Its separate ship guide gives a later reference point of up to seven assigned ships at Company Level 55, not an early-game target. How to Use Ships
Place ships with the default formation’s bonuses in mind
The default formation is available from the start. LINE Games’ Basic Growth Guide, updated January 23, 2025, documents these row effects:
Rank #2
| Formation row | Effect | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Front line | +5% artillery defense | Consider this bonus when choosing which ships to place in front. |
| Middle line | +5% artillery accuracy | Consider it for ships that benefit from more reliable artillery attacks. |
| Back line | +5% melee attack | Consider it for ships whose melee role can use the bonus. |
These are row-specific bonuses, not proof that the default formation is always optimal. Arrange the ships you actually have around their roles and the opponents you expect to face. LINE Games’ Fleet Basics: The Company

Mates can affect an individual ship and the fleet through their skills, effects, and expertise. The official ship guide says that assigning multiple mates with the same skill to one ship can raise that skill level, while an incompatible cabin assignment can reduce a mate’s expertise by up to 50%. Check the ship or fleet information screens to see whether a mate’s cabin, skills, and effects support the ship’s role; there is no single named-mate recommendation established for every player’s roster. Choose parts to support each ship’s job
Ship performance reflects base performance, parts, and mates. Parts change attributes, so prioritize the ones that address the role you want a ship to fill rather than following a universal upgrade order.
- Cannons: determine artillery type and increase artillery damage.
- Armor: affects defense and seaworthiness.
- Rams: affect ram attack, momentum, and ice breaking.
- Anchors: affect seaworthiness and momentum.
- Special parts: can affect seaworthiness, load capacity, sails, crew, and other attributes.
For example, a ship intended to carry cargo may call for different part choices than one outfitted for artillery combat. The official How to Use Ships guide describes how parts contribute to performance.

Plan shipbuilding and fleet maintenance
Shipbuilding requires blueprints, keels, wood, gunports, and ducats. The official guide lists the Shipyard Parts Shop, combat loot, Adventure, tasks, events, and palace rewards among sources for materials. Since the available sources and required materials depend on what you are building, check the in-game shipbuilding details before committing resources. LINE Games’ How to Use Ships

Water and food are consumed over time, and low supplies can reduce combat morale. Fleet ships can be assigned or replaced only while anchored in a city, so make roster changes before departure and carry supplies for the voyage ahead. LINE Games’ Beginner Guide: Combat

Compare fleet choices without chasing a universal best build
When choosing between ships or deciding how to arrange a fleet, compare the factors that matter to your immediate goal:
- Activity: Adventure, Trade, or Combat.
- Combat role: Charging, Artillery, Assault, or Support.
- Matchup: whether a combat type is strong, equal, or weak against the opponent.
- Mate fit: cabin compatibility, useful skills and effects, and expertise.
- Parts fit: the attributes needed for the ship’s intended job.
- Progression and upkeep: fleet slots currently available, building materials, and supplies.
The official guides document these mechanics but do not establish a current universally strongest early lineup, a build for every Admiral, or a precise early-game upgrade path. LINE Games’ official game page reported a September 10, 2026 update, including a Grade S Mate obtainable through gameplay; that update confirms the game continues to change but does not show that the mate is suitable for early fleets. Check the current client and official updates before relying on a specific ranking. LINE Games: Uncharted Waters Origin
