Read the earnings release, investor presentation and financial statements together, and compare the current quarter with both the same quarter last year and the previous quarter. Keep the company’s reporting scope, currency, geography and product definitions consistent throughout.
Start with comparable periods and definitions
Year-on-year comparisons help account for recurring seasonal patterns. Quarter-on-quarter comparisons can reveal more recent momentum, but may be distorted by seasonality, shutdown timing or price resets. Use both, and label each comparison clearly.

Before calculating growth or comparing companies, record the reporting currency, geography, reporting perimeter (standalone or consolidated), product scope and whether figures are adjusted. Cement-only sales are not directly comparable with cement-and-clinker volumes, and a segment result is not interchangeable with a consolidated result.

Find the reported measure and preserve its label: sales, dispatches and production describe different things. Sales or dispatches reflect material sent to customers; production reflects output. A production-based cost per tonne therefore cannot automatically be treated as cost per tonne sold.
#1 Best Overall
Check utilization, maintenance shutdowns, capacity changes and acquisitions alongside volume. Then look for changes in geography, trade versus non-trade channels, and product grade, since these can affect the value and profitability of each tonne. A company may intentionally favor value over volume. CSN said maintenance shutdowns and a strategy prioritizing value over volume affected its 2Q 2026 volume; its reported cement sales volume was 3,123 thousand tons, 1.9% higher quarter-on-quarter and 9.9% lower year-on-year (CSN Cimentos 2Q 2026 results).
Did price increases stick?
Look for average selling price or realization per tonne. If the company does not report it, do not infer a precise price change from revenue growth alone: revenue also changes with volume, product and regional mix, currency, and bundled businesses. Separate those effects where disclosures allow, and prefer constant-currency price comparisons when available.
Amrize’s Q2 2026 disclosure illustrates the distinction: cement tons sold rose 5.0% year-on-year to 6.3 million, while cement price per ton was $171.43, down 0.1% as reported and 0.2% on a constant-currency basis (Amrize Q2 2026 results). CSN Cimentos reported R$1,385.7 million in cement-segment net revenue in 2Q 2026, up 10.3% quarter-on-quarter and 14.3% year-on-year, and attributed the growth primarily to price adjustments and resilient demand (CSN Cimentos 2Q 2026 results). These are company-specific examples, not like-for-like benchmarks.
What drove cost per tonne?
Break costs into the inputs that matter to cement operations: raw materials, kiln fuel and power, freight and logistics, labor, and other operating costs. Note whether each figure is per tonne produced or sold, and whether it includes freight, overhead or other items. Dalmia Bharat, for example, labels its raw-material and power/fuel costs as based on cement production (Dalmia Bharat quarterly results).
Rank #3
Then connect cost movements to operational levers rather than treating a single cost-per-tonne figure as self-explanatory. Fuel efficiency, green and waste-heat power, alternative fuels, plant utilization and logistics distance can offset or amplify changes in input prices. ACC identifies fuel efficiency, green and waste-heat power, logistics and primary lead distance among its cost levers (ACC Q3 FY26 results). In that release, ACC reported that green power accounted for 31.3% of power consumption in Q3 FY26, an increase of 12.6 percentage points (ACC Q3 FY26 results).
Why did EBITDA or margin change?
Use realization and unit costs to explain EBITDA per tonne, total EBITDA and EBITDA margin. EBITDA per tonne helps show unit economics; total EBITDA also reflects how many tonnes were sold and the business perimeter. Margin expresses EBITDA relative to revenue, so it can fall even when EBITDA rises if costs, mix or scale move differently.
Rank #4
Check the company’s definition and reconcile adjusted EBITDA with reported EBITDA. Identify exceptional items, inventory effects and segment boundaries before attributing a change to underlying operations. Huaxin’s interim report, for example, shows selling price and cost per tonne declining by different amounts and discusses volume and overseas mix as relevant to performance (Huaxin interim report).
Company explanations are useful evidence of management’s stated drivers, but should be attributed as such rather than treated as independently established causation. Avoid declaring a margin “good” or “bad” without a relevant market, geography, product scope and comparable company set; the cited disclosures do not establish a universal cement margin or cost-per-tonne threshold.

Check cash flow, debt and investment
Operating margins do not show the whole shareholder outcome. Review finance costs, working capital, operating cash flow, capital expenditure, net debt and capacity investment when they materially affect the quarter. Separate corporate and segment items, and distinguish recurring operations from exceptional gains or charges. A strong operating result can coexist with weaker cash conversion or higher financing costs, so read the cash-flow and balance-sheet disclosures alongside the income statement.
How to compare cement companies fairly
Before ranking companies or drawing a conclusion, match the comparison on these dimensions:
- Same reporting period and currency basis; use constant-currency realization where available.
- Consistent standalone or consolidated scope, and cement-only or cement-plus-clinker volume.
- Cost per tonne calculated on the same basis—produced or sold—with freight and overhead treatment checked.
- Comparable adjusted EBITDA definitions and treatment of exceptional items.
- Geography, utilization, product mix, channel mix, capacity changes and acquisitions.
Without those matches, a difference in reported price, unit cost or margin may reflect definitions or business mix rather than superior operating performance.
